  1. Hi everyone! I haven't posted on the forums in quite a while.....I mostly just lurk but I have a question and thought the hive would know. My daughter and I volunteer at our local library ( very small library ) twice a month. They have decided to take a Saturday to try and raise awareness of our library within the community due to the fact we no longer get many patrons under the age of 40 ( besides teenagers who come in to use computers). We specifically want to reach young readers by displaying some classic books ( Black Beauty, Charlotte's Web, Willie Wonka, etc.) and having a movie trailer for each airing throughout the day. My question is this.....are showing trailers legal? Our library doesn't have a license to publicly show movies and the librarian was the one who suggested just using trailers. I'm not sure. Are trailers like movies and have copyrights? They have given this task (coming up with trailers for the various books) to me and my daughter. I just want to make sure its legal. Thanks in advance!
  2. I really didn't mean for this to get heated....Sorry everyone. Shucks, hope I don't get banned!
  3. I'm the OP and well.....I think most of us can agree that our government needs a better plan, bottom line. It's been interesting to hear everyone's opinions. I still just think you still need to show some sort of ID, preferably a photo one. I'm feeling like a few others are feeling in that we have to show ID for a lot of things whether it be medical, passports, or whatever. Heck, we're taxed for so much now anyway what's a small fee for voter ID's? I can't think of a better reason to be taxed, to make sure our voting system is reliable. I realize that's just my opinion though. I'd sure be willing to pay for mine through a few dollars every four years on my water bill or whatever. Just saying. Peace everyone and thanks to all who replied :-)
  4. Well said....I'm not sure why it bothers anyone either. I just think it's a legitimate concern for me and seems to others as well. Good to know. Just looked....a photo ID in Kentucky is $12
  5. Yes, I agree. Acquiring some type of photo ID should be made available to all and cheap so that everyone could have one. Not just for voting, but other things as well. I would have been very happy to have shown my driver's license, I just wasn't asked. We don't have voter identification cards that I know of. I don't know.....just seemed too easy.
  6. But how does that prove that I am who I say I am? I just signed a name, didn't show any proof to them that I am indeed who I am. Does that make sense?
  7. Bothered by this......I voted today ( and have since I turned 18) and have never had to show any identification whatsoever to prove that I'm an American citizen. I have to sign my name but that's it. This REALLY concerns me, anyone else? Are you required to show identification in your state?
  8. Yes, I love my small town too! The things I love about it: *Being greeted at my bank by my name because they know me. *Being able to go to our library and use a real card catalog because that's all they use. You still remove the card from the sleeve in the book and sign your name! I'll never tire of that! *The fact that every year at Christmas you can find the same old beautiful nativity scene that's been used for decades on the courthouse lawn. * For our one and only grocery store that still sells Rag Bologna and has carry-outs who still carry your groceries out to your car for you. *The air is just easier to breathe and life is just more simple. I guess it depends on how you were raised and what each prefers. I like shopping in bigger towns and cities and will happily drive an hour to do so but when it comes down to going back home, I gladly pull into my small hometown and driveway and breathe a sigh. To me, there's just no comparison!
  9. I was born and raised in TN but have lived most of my adult life in KY. I love my Bluegrass State. I was shocked when we moved to West Virginia to find that you do not pull off to the side of the road in respect when you approach a funeral procession. We have always done that and I seriously cringed every time when I couldn't. I felt like I was killing a kitten or something.
  10. I wasn't sure myself either so I actually did go ahead and contact a university that my daughter might contemplate just to make sure. The admissions director said it would, indeed, fulfill the requirement of two years' study of one language and that it would not keep her from being admitted. She said they just want to see two years worth of studying one language. I was actually surprised and thought they might not count it towards 2 years. This isn't an ivy league school of course, but still a very good state university. All colleges are different though. It really is best to check just to make sure. Thanks again Regentrude!
  11. That would work. One more question.....do you think it would meet a college's requirement for two years of study in one foreign language by not going into a second level?
  12. Hi Everyone, My oldest took a French I course with Breaking the Barrier her sophomore year but struggled with it due to lack of practice that the curriculum offered. We tried supplementing with Live Mocha but still struggled. She learned quite a bit of vocabulary and some conversational phrases but I'm not sure if she retained enough to go onto a French II level. Fast forward....now it's her senior year and my question is this.....if we were to choose to use another French I level course and gather the hours needed for another credit should we list it as French I again or French II? As long as you have at least 120 hours of study in a subject it's considered a credit but what do I label it as on her transcript? Thanks!
  13. How awesome! I feel your pride as a mother and I don't even have a son. But if I did, as much of a sacrifice that it would be, I can think of no greater honor. You are very blessed to have a son that would choose to serve his country. My husband has always said that he has only one regret in life and that was not serving his country. Many, many blessings to your son and your family for your sacrifice.
  14. My daughters both (17 & 10) love the Just Dance game. They have been known to play it for hours. They like the Just Dance 2, not the current Just Dance 3 though. HTH :-)
  15. Yes, that was a probably some good information to come by after 12 years
  16. Thanks Barbara! Yes, Kentucky is relaxed in their laws regarding homeschooling. It's a wonderful thing for us as parents considering other states. I've never had the mentality to slack regarding that though so have definitely used wisdom in choosing her courses and credits to prepare her for college. It's the only credit that she lacks in fulfilling a pre-college curriculum so it's a go. Thanks again to everyone who responded :-)
  17. Thanks Alison, I have went and done that. Most are saying a life science, physical science and earth & space. I think I will have her take Chemistry. She's already got Algebra II under her belt so the math shouldn't be a problem I wouldn't think.
  18. Ellie.....uh..hmmm......well no I didn't know that (showing my ignorance here). I've been under the assumption for 12 years that we as home schoolers had to still abide by our state's laws regarding graduation as far as credits earned and amount. So, I can choose whatever credits my student desires and however many credits needed to graduate (of course keeping in mind colleges and their wishes for admission)? Is it because the state of Kentucky considers us a private school?
  19. Well......I have to admit I agree. Just wanted someone else's advice. Looks like she needs to take a chemistry course this year to beef it up some. Would you suggest Chemistry or an Introduction to Chemistry and Physics? She's leaning toward the way of being a Graphic Artist. Thanks for taking the time to respond!! I really appreciate it :-)
  20. Anyone? Maybe I shouldn't limit a response from just fellow Kentuckians :-)
  21. Hi everyone :-) I know to meet our state's graduation requirements that a student has to have 3 science credits which are to incorporate biological science, physical science, earth and space science and unifying concepts. My rising senior has taken thus far: 9th - Apologia's Physical Science course along with a study of mineral identification which I am counting as an Earth & Space credit (I contacted Apologia and they suggested that I add a mineral identification study to count it toward an Earth and Space credit) 10th - Biology 11th - Biology II Has what she's taken so far meet those requirements? I'm just nervous I guess. This is her last year and I'm definitely wanting to make sure. Thank you for any advice, my brain needs rest from this.
  22. I thought that was correct but didn't know for sure. That would be great if she were to do that.
  23. Actually, I was just wondering that. Yes, it is an option at a local community college. Two semesters there would be equivalent to two years right? She took French her sophomore year using Breaking the Barrier but honestly struggled with it. The workbook just didn't have enough practice and I'm not sure how much she retained of it to go on to a second level. I wanted her to study Spanish to begin with, just more practical in my opinion but...... Thanks Crystal! I think that may be an option if our finances will allow.
  24. Can this be done? This would be the Spanish version 3 for a high school senior. Thanks for any help!
