Should this child skip ahead in WWE??
mommyto4 replied to diaperjoys's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
In my area, 8 year olds (and even some 7 year olds) are in Grade 3. But more importantly, he should be doing work that challenges him and is at his level. Put WWE2 back on the shelf:001_smile:. -
Ordering from Nallenart (L'art de Lire)
mommyto4 replied to MinivanMom's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I use learninghouse.ca They are fabulous! I am not sure how much it would be to ship to the US, but you could check. They have always shipped very quickly and reliably to me. Good luck! -
If you listen to Jim Weiss read SOTW...
mommyto4 replied to rochellek's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
When we are listening to them during our history time, they just listen with the map in front of them. My oldest has just started to follow along in the book. I stop after each section and ask the questions in the AG or do a narration. My boys also listen "for fun" in the car, at bedtime or whenever. They usually just sit and listen, but may have a toy to play with. They love, love, love the CD's and beg to listen to more, but I am a mean mommy and refuse to let them listen ahead of what we are studying! -
If you have white dishes,
mommyto4 replied to BamaTanya's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We have had white Corelle dishes for at least five years. I like them, and they always fit the different holidays and whatever napkins or tableclothes I put with them. But, I do find them a bit dull and boring and I find myself looking longingly at colorful dishes. However, if I had to do it over again, I would still have gotten white:001_smile:! -
I would start with Level Three. You could always go at a quicker pace, but it would be a good introduction to dictation and narration. If you wanted to do copywork with her, you could find your own or use the dictation passages as copywork and then use them for dictation the next day. Have fun!

Here is my nine year old's narration of Beowulf with no editing. He was instructed to write half a page about the story of Beowulf: King Hrathgar had a palace with a great hall in it. He let his servants and guards sleep there. But Grendal, a terrible monster, came there every night to eat the men up. Beowolf, with the strength of 30 men, came to kill Grendal. When Grendal came, Beowulf grabed his arm. He pulled Grenadal's arm off and killed him. King Hrathgar gave Beowolf lots of gifts. Then they had a great feast. Now King Hrathgar's men could once more sleep in the great hall. Here is my seven year old's narration. He was asked to write three sentences about the story. I helped him with some of the spelling (like the names, "warrior," and "hours"). Beowulf was a strong warrior. Beowulf killed Grendel with his own hands. Beowulf killed Grendel's mother and stayed under water for hours. I am proud of both my boys:001_smile:

I think about this a lot. I imagine what it would be like to have just my two oldest -- we could do unit studies, have quiet work time, and do just so much more! Having a two year old and a four year old means so many distractions and way less of "mommy time" for the old kids as they try to work through their studies. That being said, they love their siblings and they have so much fun playing together. I do think that without the little ones, the older ones would be a bit lonely!

I often have the kids run around the house five times before they start. This gets them laughing and ready to sit. I also have their work set out with a pencil, so they are ready to work right away. I always have them do a little independent work first before they have to listen to mom! If they are still not too excited about starting, I will promise them a five minute break after the first subject is done to do something they really want to do (ie. work on a puzzle, look at our big wall map, help a sibling with a lego project).

I switched to Standards this year. I find the HIG easier to follow and the workbooks nicer to use.

:iagree: We also like the Magic Treehouse books.

Pregnancy and moving question
mommyto4 replied to Moxie's topic in General Education Discussion Board
With a baby... I know people may not agree with me, but I moved when I was eight and a half months pregnant with my third, and it was awful. It was nice to have everyone do stuff for you, but the stress of the move was too much and I ended up with three months of migraines before he was born. At 34 weeks, I was in the hospital with preterm labour because of the stress of trying to get everything ready to move. I think if you can wait until the baby is four months, things will be easier. That way you don't need to pack until the baby is two or three months and you will be physically feeling much better. I am sure others will still help out too! -
My little guy fell last night while playing in the trailer. Do you think he needs stitches or should we just let it heal?

What's your 2nd grade plan?
mommyto4 replied to Classical Country Mama's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I don't think you need a plan of books to read... we just head to the library and choose what we like! You are also using SOTW, so just look through that list to pick some books, if you need ideas. Looking at the Sonlight website also will help you choose some books. I used MCT Island with my son last year for Grade 3. I personally wouldn't use it for Grade 2, especially if you are looking for a grammar program that is less teacher intensive than FLL. Others will have different opinions, I am sure. We loved parts of the program, but I need something more structured for my boys, and less expensive too. -
What's your 2nd grade plan?
mommyto4 replied to Classical Country Mama's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Looks great to me. I don't have any advice for grammar (we're doing FLL). You can see my plan in my signature. The only things missing might be handwriting and phonics. Are you planning to teach cursive or review printing? There is copy work in WWE, but you may want something more. And you may still want your child doing phonics. I am not sure what you have used in Grade One, but you may want to add something like ETC. Looks like a great year. -
Beverly Cleary's Ramona books? Your honest opinions, please.
mommyto4 replied to VBoulden's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
My boys have listened to most of them on audiobooks and love them! The characters and stories are great. The families in the book are real, yet so very loving. Our favorites are any of the Henry Huggins ones, but we also loved the Ramona books too.
