  1. I just gave my ds Letter Factory for his 4th birthday. He went from knowing about 10 letters and two sounds to knowing all his letters and all the sounds in 2 weeks of watching the dvd. He is now very interested in "doing school" with his brothers.
  2. My son takes violin with the Suzuki method. We really like that he is learning by ear, as well as the opportunity for group lessons and performances throughout the year. It requires a lot of time on the part of the parent as you have to go to all lessons and participate in practicing at home. For us, it has been a wonderful experience.
  3. We love so many things for gr. 1 -- definitely All About Spelling and ETC are on the list. We also just got Draw, Write Now, and are enjoying that with my reluctant artist.
  4. I use WWE for my two boys and find it easy to use and so effective. We also do SOTW, but I must admit that we just do the comprehension questions and an oral narration. I figure we get enough written narrations in WWE. This leaves more time for the fun activities in SOTW and keeps the kids excited and happy to do history together.
  5. I just showed this to my ds8,and he loved it! Thanks so much. Grammar is his favourite subject, and this will be a great addition to his folder. :)
  6. I am a new homeschooler (just started in August), and I have four young children (ages 8, 6, 4, and 2). When I started all this, I didn't know how it was going to work. But it does! I take one day at a time and remember to enjoy being with my kids. We only do a coop once a month, along with weekly swim lessons and gym times. The older boys have evening activities twice a week. The house doesn't look as nice as it could if the older two were in school, and grocery shopping often gets done at 9pm at night. Meals are simple, and the extra baking I used to do doesn't get done. I get to be with friends at the kids' activities and at church. That's enough for me! I find that life actually is less stressful as you aren't trying to keep up with the school schedule. I am in more control. Don't get me wrong -- most days have the boys complaining about schoolwork, my 4 year old tantruming and my two year old begging for a story to be read to her while I am trying to teach long division for the tenth time, and toys are everywhere. I can't meet all their demands but we work together to learn and grow. My mom comes over once every week or two to help with the kids when I have an appointment, and she marvels at how I survive. But I love being with the kids and even though it is hard, I wouldn't give it up! I guess what I am trying to say is that you can do it! Trust yourself!
  7. I don't plan ahead; we just spend 10 minutes four times a week. I love the fact that AAS doesn't need to planned ahead. You just open the book and go! My son loves that it's 10 minutes and that's it. He does enjoy doing the lessons, but appreciates that it is short every day without fail. Do note that it did take a few steps to get to be comfortable knowing what we were doing. All the best!
  8. My son loved those steps. He still likes to look at words and point out why it's a c or a k. Have fun watching your child understand the rule!
  9. Thanks for the ideas of books, everyone. One Michele, the lists from Sonlight, Veritas, Ambleside, and 1000 Good books are just what I needed. This will keep him happy for awhile! Thanks!
  10. My ds8 loves to read. He reads five or six books a week, and we are having trouble keeping him supplied with reading material. He reads mainly fiction, and loves almost anything we give him. He is not emotionally mature enough to deal with some books, but he can read at a Grade 7 or 8 level, I would guess. Any ideas of books we could give him? I have looked through some old threads about favourite read alouds, but he has read almost all of those books. Any more ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
  11. In Canada, we have French Smart books. I haven't used them myself, but a friend of mine (who is a home schooling french teacher) uses them with her children along with Rosetta Stone. http://www.amazon.ca/FrenchSmart-Gr-4-Popular-Book-Editorial/dp/1897457499/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1294057906&sr=8-1
  12. My son is also enjoying L'art de lire. It has a workbook and CD to help with pronunciation. He completed Level one in about three months, and we are set to start level two tomorrow:). He can do most of it on his own!
  13. My friend just had the surgery, and she says she would never do it again. The pain was worse than she expected. I hope your husband is able to find relief soon. I will pray for peace for him.
  14. Thanks for all the advice... we are going to go and visit. I called my sil and she said to come. I don't think we can know for sure what it is and he doesn't have any other symptoms of HFM. I also read online that outbreaks are usually only in summer and early fall. We are going to call them canker sores and pray for the best! Thanks again!
  15. I think you are right... sigh. Time to call the family.
  16. We are just about to head out to visit our family (who we see only 3 or 4 times a year). But, my ds3 woke up with sores in his mouth. They are small, with white tops, and they hurt him. He is feeling fine besides this. I see no spots on his hands or feet. Do you think it is hand, foot, and mouth or perhaps too many candies at Christmas? Help! We so want to go, but we don't want to infect our family. Thanks!
  17. I had them printed at Staples for about 7 cents a page (this is in Canada). I did it this way to save my printer from having to print so many pages, and I knew I wanted all the pages.
  18. I agree with a previous poster who said that the doctor's comments are encouraging. When my friend was diagnosed, all along they said it didn't look good, that it had all the signs of cancer. I will pray for you as you wait.
  19. Wonderful news! I will continue to pray for you and your family. Praise God!
  20. We are working through WWE2. We do it five days a week and combine Days 1 and 2 into one day. I hope to be done by March to get a start on WWE3. It doesn't take us much time this way. We work about 5-15 minutes each day.
  21. We use this recipe too, and I have never had any issues. The dough is so easy to work with and comes out beautifully! Julie
  22. Just keep reviewing... my ds8 does these worksheets everyday for 5-10 minutes, or if he is not focusing, I assign a certain amount. I would rotate between adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. I print off some at the beginning of each week and just list it in his math work. He likes it because it is something he can be successful at (most of the time!). http://www.math-drills.com/
  23. I will pray for you and your children. One of my best friends is going through chemo. She has four young chldren, and her 6 yr old son was so worried about her losing her hair. He talked about it constantly, and was so afraid about it happening. When her hair started to come out, the kids actually were fascinated. And when she came down with her new wig, her son commented, "I like your new hair... I think it is nicer than your real hair." He wasn't upset at all. I hope your children will adjust as quickly:).
  24. Thanks! I have been wondering if the new versions were worth getting... I think I will get them to work through during the summer.
