  1. I have adjusted to the new version of the program although I miss the flexibility of the previous version. I can see my points for the day/week so maybe there are different versions for others? A few years back, my son signed up for the paid version and then forgot to cancel it when the free 2 weeks offer was over. We did reach out to them and they kindly reimbursed us. My son also reached out around the same time to save his streak and they helped with that too. I hope you can find a way to share your frustrations and ideas for improvement. I really like the app and have improved a lot with my French language learning in the last 1.5 years.
  2. Congrats to all who have found work! I did my first day as a supply teacher yesterday and I really liked it! The school year is almost over, but I am hoping that in the fall, I will be called often. The teaching assistant job was already filled when I applied, but I am keeping my eyes open for other opportunities.
  3. I am officially on the supply teacher list at the school -- felt good! I told them I could start at the end of May so I am hoping to get an early morning call soon. It's a bit tricky as I still have one homeschool student, but I am hoping that they call on a day I can work all the details out. And then today, I sent in a resume for a Teacher's Assistant position at the same school for the fall. Not sure we can handle me working full-time but I thought I would apply and hear the details if they are interested in me. All the best to the other job hunters! It's a lot of work, isn't it?
  4. I emailed my first resume for a supply teaching job at a local school. I haven't worked for over 20 years so I am feeling quite overwhelmed by the whole process. My last homeschooling student has just a few weeks of school left in eighth grade and then will head off to high school in the fall. I am also trying to help my son get a summer job for the last couple months with no luck. Not sure why he hasn't gotten a job. I am certain he would succeed in almost any position. It's hard.
  5. My kids each have a small plastic box for their "things" -- artwork, photos, medals, cards, ballet shoes, baby books, whatever is special. We look through it every couple of months and add a few things. And at the same time, the kids often voluntarily get rid of things that aren't as special anymore. I have six kids and my kids know that they cannot keep everything.
  6. I got him a jump starter for the car, a few books, a drill set, and new guitar strings. Not too exciting but all are practical which he likes best 🙂 Stocking stuffers will be chocolate, socks, and maybe some green tea.
  7. My husband tested positive about 6 weeks ago and is still dealing with some symptoms -- cough, runny nose, tiredness especially the day after he does light physical work. He did develop a secondary infection at the 14-day mark and the antibiotics helped get rid of the sinus issues. He has checked in with his doctor via phone and the doctor says that his symptoms are normal. The doctor recommended vitamin C and lots and lots of fluids. I am sorry you are dealing with this.
  8. My motivation was hearing that I have high triglyceride levels after a blood test in October. This was a complete shock to me and helped me to cut out sugar and most fats (and lose 30 pounds and reduce my BMI from 25 to 21!). I do not want to be on medications at 46 years old. I get retested in two months and am hoping that these changes have paid off. I do still miss my home-baked goodies and pies, and chocolate. I do allow myself to have a little sugar once in a while. Sometimes it is a square of dark chocolate, although lately, it is a thin cookie with my morning tea. I do miss chewy things so I have added whole wheat and rice crackers sometimes to control that craving. I also eat walnuts for snacks. I find that I think that if I just have a little sweet thing that I will not crave sugar -- the opposite often happens and I just want a bit more. I have been doing this for four months, very successfully, but I do fear that I won't be able to continue these habits long-term. However, I love how much energy I have and how much better I look. I am working with a physiotherapist to strengthen my back so I can get back to exercise too. I am getting closer to being able to work out like I used to. Go for it! If you have a bad day, try again the next day. Every day that you make good choices about your food is a wonderful step in the right direction!
  9. I thought I would update our Omicron situation. DS15 -- Symptoms on the 19th -- runny nose, tired which lasted for 5 days. Tested positive 24th Me --Symptoms on the 23rd -- runny nose, tired, sneezing. Tested positive on the 24th So that leaves my husband who is feeling tired this morning and will test later today. I think (and hope) that we have finally all gotten it and will be able to go out next week. That will be four weeks for our family. For us, it really has been like a cold. I think the vaccinations and recent boosters made a huge difference.
  10. Nope! When I joined the forum years ago, I thought for sure that we had completed our family with our four kids and were definitely done. I remember that when I picked my user name, there was a caution not to make a name with the number of kids as it could change. I remember laughing to myself at that -- knowing that for sure, we would have no more kids. Well, four years ago, we adopted my cousins two little ones -- now I am mommy to 6.
  11. I thought I would add our experience with Omicron... DS17 -- Tested positive on 4th -- tired, achy, sore throat, runny nose -- stayed in bed for three days, feeling better after 6 days DD13 -- Tested negative on the 8th -- tired, sore throat, a bit of a cough -- stayed in bed for three days, better after 5 days DS9 -- Tested positive on the 14th -- hoarse voice, sore throat, brief low-grade fever, good energy, and appetite DD8 -- Tested positive on the 17th -- slight, brief fever, chills, runny nose, good energy So that leaves just DS15 and my husband and me (although I have a sore throat and runny nose today). I have thought that it would spread quickly through our family, but it has taken a long time... All adults and teens are fully vaccinated with adults boosted. Kids had one shot.
  12. Two and a half years ago we expanded our family from four kids to six kids by adopting my cousin's two little kids. They were three and five when they came. Roght from the start, we noticed that our time was being taken up so much by the little ones. Especially at the beginning, there was so many transitions and work to be put into those transitions. Going to church became a big ordeal, and visiting others and having visitors had to be stopped while we attached. Things that we just did routinely became very difficult and sometimes filled with conflict. There were a lot of open discussion about how things were changing and how the older kids were feeling about it. It was especially difficult for our youngest biological daughter. We really made it a priority to set aside time for the bigger ones. My husband would take the bigger ones out for breakfast on Saturday morning or be sure to drive them to their activities and use the time in the car to connect with them. It was also a big strain on our marriage. We had a very strong marriage. But expanding our family with two little ones, and their so many needs, was a very difficult and trying. Make sure that you communicate a lot and take time for just you and your husband. It also means a lot more of school meetings, doctor's appointments, lunch making, laundry, buying clothes, and all the stuff that comes with adding kids. It has made me very very busy! For us, the change was permanent. That meant dreams were changed, the future is changed. New dreams had to develop, and a new future had to be envisioned I will pray for you and for the new little ones in your house. We are 2 and 1/2 years in, and it's so much easier now. Julie
  13. My third son has been a very challenging child. This year was even worse. I was thinking about putting him in school, but was not at all convinced he would do better there. My wise husband told me to unschool him -- and it has been wonderful. I can focus on my other two while he plays or reads or does some workbook pages of his own choosing or creates his own games or draws or whatever! He is happier, and I can survive a day! He still does co-op once a week at our house and has to listen to read alouds and do his AWANA work. I do hope this won't last for too long and he will want to start back on the curriculum I have picked out for him. But right now, unschooling is working for our family. Julie
  14. "We don't have money for that." And if asked further by the kids, I talk about where our money does go to and how those things are priorities.
  15. I have had four unmedicated deliveries (and one had one of those huge heads -- 38cm). I made it through my fourth delivery by telling myself and anyone in the room that this was the last time I would ever do this. During each contraction, I would remind myself that I was counting down to never, ever having to feel another contraction again. And then, the baby arrived and I was beyond happy! All the best!
  16. We rented bikes and biked around the Sea Wall -- so fun and not too expensive! Grenville Island is great too. Have fun!
  17. Getting married -- seriously! Have someone sleeping beside me every night has helped immensely as most of my anxiety happened at night. Visualization of peaceful situations to relax myself Trying to keep stress down
  18. My son started night terrors before 18months (I don't remember exactly when). Absolutely awful. He would scream for an hour or more once or twice a night. They finally lessened by 3.5 years old and now, at 9, he has them rarely and not nearly as long. Professionals told us it was okay to leave him alone, as trying to soothe him did not help at all. It was very hard on my marriage. I don't have any answers -- sorry.
  19. I think you are right about this... we live in a very affluent area. Julie
  20. Yes. Kids have to be 10 years old, but can have their siblings help out too. It is our local paper so it is delivered twice a week in the afternoon. Our paper is having trouble finding kids to do the job, so they do contract out to adults too. We love it as a first job! And the Christmas tips are fun :)
  21. My boys deliver our local paper two days per week. They started at age 10 and have earned a bit of money and learned lots of lessons on perserverance, commitment and pride in their work.
  22. I was given only three days of prednisone after over a month of daily, debilitating migraines. My neurologist had tried everything. It was to reset everything. I ended up getting pregnant and that stopped the migraines :) I hope you can break the cycle. Julie
  23. My kids have taken it off and on over the years. It has been effective for two of them, and doesn't work at all with one of them. My son's doctor recommended it to help with my third son's sleeping disorder. My kids will ask for it if they are especially tired and can't calm down to go to sleep. The vast majority of nights they just fall asleep on their own, though.
  24. Sorry -- I just saw this! We mainly read the text for MOH3 and did a narration card for each lesson (maybe 5-8 sentences). We did some of the mapping, most quizzes/tests, and an extra activity about once a week. I plan to do the same for MOH4 although I hope to have him use the topics for some of his writing for WWS 3. He will be attending a Christian high school which means he will do Geography in gr. 9, Canadian History in Grade 10, and then I think either World History or US History or Physical Geography after that. We have completed SOTW already so I feel like he has a very good knowledge base in history.
