  1. Unless you can teach Spanish, I would suggest using the DVDs or new online program. The cost for the online option is only $35 more that buying the homeschool kit with the CDs and would be so much better. I don't think either the kit with the CDs or without the CDs would work for self-study. By the way, my sons really enjoyed the Spanish 1 teacher! You can what samples of the classes at the BJU website.
  2. Yes, the tests will be on the CD for the class. Some classes have wonderful teacher/student packets on the CDs so be sure to check them out.
  3. My son will be using Christian Light Education's (CLE) horticulture materials next year. The course uses a public school textbook along with a workbook and answer key writen by CLE.
  4. BJU online/DVD teaches the graphing calculator in Algrebra II.
  5. My son did poorly on the math section of his first ACT practice test so I purchased Chalk Dust's ACT-SAT math review. I had him watch the DVDs while taking notes and completing all the problems along with the teacher. We saw steady improvement in his practice scores while he was taking the class. While math was still his lowest score, it was much higher than it would have been without Chalk Dust.
  6. I think combining would work just fine. You could use the 3rd or 4th grade level and have your 2nd grader listen to the stories, participate in discussion, and sing the hymns. Your 5th grader could also do that and then complete the worktext, memory work, and daily short independent Bible reading (starting in 4th grade). You can view full chapter samples on the BJU Press website to help you decide which level would work best for your family. The student materials packet is completely unnecessary, and the hymn cd is only useful if you want to teach the hymns and don't know them yourself. You can often find the TE for a good price on ebay.
  7. No, you'll also need the TE. The stories and lessons are in the TE and the worktest is reinforcement/practice.
  8. The home teacher's editions were especially written for home use. The older social studies home editions had a maps and more section in the back of book so that the homeschoolers would not need to purchase the expensive map package used in schools. The science & math home editions had aditional inexpensive home packets. BJU has not updated everything so these editions are still available in some subjects in some grades. However, the newer teacher's editions are only available in one edition which have cd's that contain the maps, diagrams, practice pages, etc. The new teacher's editions are full color and contain a readable copy of the student book. I think they are user friendly for all.
  9. It looks like BJU has updated this class for the coming school year so the comments above don't really fit. I'm not familiar with the current teacher. Sorry.
  10. My DS, who learns well through listening to lectures, enjoyed the DVDs and the teacher. The class includes information about the arts during the time period. Frequent map work is completed in the actvity book, however, there is not a timeline to complete. The tests are tough, but my son did well (A) with a reasonable amount of study usually less than 1/2 hour the night before. There is daily homework including reading the text, answering review questions, and working in the activity book. My son has requested to take ecconmics and government with this same teacher. I guess enjoying a teacher's presentation is really an individualized thing. You can watch samples on the BJU Press website.
