  1. I would have had donuts. Like you said, it was for a fun "hot cocoa and donuts" experience. Punishment and reward, in my humble opinion, should not be food related. I would discipline the behavior and then have that donut.
  2. We used Spectrum Chemistry by Rainbow Science. Pros: - Perfect for the kinetic learner - Labs Weekly - Student directed (Text and Labs directed to the student, although we did most of the labs together) - Teacher Manual offered great solutions, not just the answers Cons: - Costly - Can be Time consuming (not only do you have a lab a week, some of them take quite a bit of time for the results to show) My son loved this curriculum and learned plenty.
  3. My son used Spectrum Chemistry last year. A good portion of the labs have limited supplies, sometimes offering just 1 item for a particular lab. One would have to observe at times if you just purchased this one kit. But it could still work and your dc didn't have a problem alternating who actually does the lab. And it really is a lab a week, so there are plenty of opportunities for both to be hands-on.
  4. We are. We took a 3 week break. I'm ready to go, but my boys are still in "break" mode and do not want to start tomorrow. I'm preparing for a long whiny day. Sigh.
  5. Just for reference, my ds needed more review and we made the switch after MM5. He placed into Saxon 7/6.
  6. I, too suggest Derek Owens. Self-paced but with a live teacher to grade the work and offer feedback.
  7. but I can't seem to find the appropriate links once I get on College Board. I sign in for my son, but then what? Can anyone help me? I need to make some changes.
  8. No. I know myself, and I would not be able to keep that up.
  9. Well according to the Art Reed videos, I think it's something like: Lessons 1-90 in the Advanced Math book is Trig./Geometry/Adv. Alg. Then for Pre-Calculus, go back to lesson 60 of the Advanced Math Text, finish the text, then complete the first 25 lessons in the Calculus book. That would be considered Pre-Calculus. Then you would finish the Calculus book as the Calculus course. On saying all that, my son did the 1-90 lessons in the Advanced Math book last year as a sophomore. This year as a junior, he's enrolled at the community college for his math courses. He placed at the Pre-Calculus level, is currently taking it, but says he hasn't learned anything new. Next semester he'll take Calculus I.
  10. My son is enrolled at the local community college. He took 1 course last year, his sophomore year (Intro to Java), and he is currently taking 2 classes: Composition and Pre-Calc. There a a few reasons he is enrolled. He needed the "competition" of being with other students and "measuring up". Some of the things he is interested in are better served in a classroom environment so that he could get that back and forth feedback with teacher/students. Some of his classes are just beyond what I can do. It will look good on his transcript to have some cc courses, plus it will be added conformation he is ready for college if he does well. It is helping him to manage his time and to get his work done, without me being in charge. He needed to own his education a bit, and this was the perfect opportunity.
  11. - I'm too private a person to share my business to random people (those who "like" the people I "like" who "like the people they "like"...) - I'm not that interested in other random people's daily pettiness, brags, whining, etc... - I'm busy.
  12. I was going to suggest a cooking class as well, or maybe have a 1-on-1 session with a local chef to come to your home a bake a pie with your son. That may be cheaper than enrolling him in an entire class, and such a great memory.
  13. Thanks regentrude. I'll ask the schools specifically. The ED option feels very limiting, considering finances play a huge part in where my ds will attend.
  14. So here is the scenario: School A has an EA deadline of Nov. 1, School B has an ED deadline of Dec. 1 Can my ds still apply to school A? By ED, do schools not want you to apply to anywhere else until you hear from them. For school A, ds would know if he was accepted by Dec. 15; school B's acceptance letter would be mailed out by Jan. 15. If ds does not get into school B, he could still apply regular admission to other schools, correct? But he would no doubt be out of most of the merit aid. This is for my junior, so it wouldn't be this Nov., but the next. My stress level is beginning to rise. Any help would be appreciated.
  15. That was very interesting to read. Seeing Thomas Jefferson having parenting difficulty like the rest of us is somehow very comforting. I'm not sure why, but there it is.
  16. My older son used Derek Owens. The Pre-Algebra curriculum is one you can actually purchase. His explanations are spot on.
  17. Remember it's a marathon not a sprint. Enjoy the relationship and don't get hung up on the details. Everything doesn't need to be done the way the publisher says. Have Fun.
  18. Poor kid. So sorry. What are the medical options?
  19. We used Irasshai last year and it was good for a beginner. We are now using BYU Independent Study for credit. We chose the teacher option which gives him weekly class time and he has to set up a time to do 15 minute talking sessions with the TA (1 per lesson/7 lessons). Each lesson is taking 2-3 weeks and it is considered a semester course worth 0.5 credit. They offer 4 semesters: Year 1, Part 1 and Part 2; Year 2, Part 1 and Part 2. So far it's going well.
  20. Since posting this question a few days ago, I've shopped around for some quotes, and State Farm is coming off as reasonable. Wow. Just Wow. Well, at least I'm more prepared for the next one, who is 14.
  21. We just got a quote today on how much it would cost to add my teen to our insurance. He'll be taking his test in 2 weeks. State Farm wants $800 a year. :scared: And that's with the good student discount. Please tell me there is something cheaper. We'll switch companies if need be. There are cheaper options out there, right?
