  1. I would also look into McGruffy Math. Tons of manipulative and games to solidly concepts. Worked wonders for my son. He did K-2.
  2. I'm going to suggest Cavalier King Charles as well. We have 2 and they are sturdy enough to play with my three boys without me worrying about them getting hurt. They are also the biggest of the toy breed. They are friendly, easy to train and don't have a tendency to bark much. But also, any toy breed mixed with a poodle would probably work as well. I would not suggest any herding breed, ie. Corgi. They can be territorial and "herd" your kids. Also, there tolerance level is low.
  3. Thanks for your responses. It looks like I'll go with this. I'm a bit behind in my purchases this year for all the indecision.
  4. I do snack on nuts and sunflower seeds. Maybe that's the culprit. Anyways, I've got 10 more days, I've followed it strictly, so a couple of more pounds may come off. All in all I liked it. And it's changed my eating habits for goo.
  5. I didn't go into it with the intention of loosing weight, because I new that wasn't the purpose. I just thought it would be the natural byproduct. I do think I enjoy eating this way, but I also know I'll bring some foods back in my diet and I don't want to gain the weight back.
  6. I am 20 days into Whole30, and while I feel great, the pounds didn't come off like I thought they would. I workout 6 days a week and teach group ex, so I was hoping for better results. Also, how soon after you stopped did you bring back foods that were in your diet previously, consequently gaining few pounds?
  7. This is my experience with my 3 sons. Oldest son homeschooled through high school and will be off to college in the fall. There is nothing scary about homeschooling a high school student. It really is just the next step, and academically just follow the basic requirements (ie. 4 units of Math, 3 units of science, etc...) This child has attended community college in his sophomore thru senior year, has had a part time job, and an internship for the school year which has turned into a summer internship. The most important thing is to stay administratively disciplined for the transcript. Middle son is finishing up his freshman year at the brick and mortar high school. He wanted to attend middle school so that he would get used to school. I did not put him in middle school at all. He has adjusted beautifully in that he has friends, gets his assignments done on time, follows the school's rules without any problem and is a straight "A" student taking honors courses. He has even mentioned that high school is easier than homeschooling was. It took ds all of a 3 days to adjust to highschool. Youngest son will be in 8th grade next year and has asked if he could go to middle school. NOPE. He will adjust fine. And no decisions have to be in stone. You and your daughter will be fine either road you choose.
  8. It would be WWS1, and looking at the sample, it doesn't look like it would be enough at this late date.
  9. That's my question. Ds will be in 8th grade next year, but the following year; he will be going to high school. We've done Essentials In Writing this year, with ok results, but it's not something I want to continue. If not WWS, what other options do I have for it to be more student led and still get a solid writing program?
  10. I'm starting Friday. I need to finish my M&M bag first. I am a bit nervous. Since I teach group exercise, I feel like I'm going to be starving myself without the carbs. But I keep telling myself, it's just for 30 days (at minimum). I too am hoping to get a handle on my sweet tooth. That sugar just not metabolize like it used to.
  11. I'm taking comfort in your replies. He has committed to his college choice, we have made the deposit. Still showing no outward excitement. He will be going the acceptance weekend next week, and I am hoping this will "light a spark", at least a little. And yes, he shows enthusiasm for gaming.
  12. My son loved McGruffy Math for K-2nd. Lots of games to reinforce the lesson. There are short lessons for those short attention spans. :001_smile: It looks simple, but it is really solid. My son was able to move from there to MM 3 without a hitch.
  13. Son chose Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology Major: Mechanical Engineering Reasons: First Choice Absolutely felt like this was his school when we toured. Great "fit". Fabulous Financial Aid package
  14. We planned on more, but ended with 5. Here's the thing. My son got tired/exhausted of the whole process. Usually, even if the school is on the common app, there are extra essays to write. So yeah, we ended applying to 5 and he got accepted to 4.
  15. If your son was accepted to his top college, offered great aid, but showed little ethusiasm, mostly out of fear for the challenge ahead; how did he fair once he was there? And not only is he uncertain of the academic output, he's not sure what he wants to major in. If you have experience in this, how did it play out?
  16. Algebra 1 by Kanold, Burger, Dixon, Larson and Leinwand. Publister by Houghton, Mifflin and Harcourt.
  17. Ds is currently in 7th grade doing Derek Owens Pre-Algebra. He will be homeschooled for the 8th grade, but I'm not sure I want to stay with Derek Owens for Algebra because the word problems are not that challenging and this child will be going to high school. His older brother transitioned to high school this past school year, and has stated that ds would need to be strong in figuring out word problems. So my thought was either Math In Focus grade 8 or AoPS Pre-Algebra. AoPS Pre-Algebra looks significantly stronger than Derek Owens, so that is my thinking with him repeating Pre-Algebra. Also, the school he will be attending will not accept any homeschool classes, so ds will need to start in Algebra as a freshman. Thoughts on these two options. Is there another option I'm missing? I'm usually finished with my planning at this point. I hate not having it all figured out by now.
  18. We have been very pleased with Derek Owens's courses. My third son is now doing Pre-Algebra with him and it's going really well. Both of my older sons have also used him with great results. His explanations are spot on, and workbook is not "cluttered" with problems. His approach is more mastery, so if your daughter needs constant review over time, this may not work. I like that you could, in theory, use his math courses through high school.
  19. Phil4.com offers science and math courses live. By the way, Derek Owens classes are NOT live. But they are still great courses.
  20. I don't know. but topics of discussion are happening sooner because of the exposure. Across all things: world events, pop culture, s*x, etc. I will say that my soon to be 13 year old is much "wiser" than I wish him to be. It's hard as a parent to back down from conversations you'd planned on having down the road, but such as it is. I don't know if it's harder because this is my first go at it, but it's not easy.
  21. There's comfort in knowing I'm not the only one stressing. But, I can procrastinate no longer. Today I will get started.
  22. I thought my stress was suppose to come down after my child got some acceptances. Nope. Could someone please walk me through the process of obtaining the parent FAFSA ID. My son went through the steps this evening to get his ID, but I did not see how I'm suppose to get one that ties me to him. From my understanding, the parent is suppose to have a separate ID that is still attached to the student. And he did not get an actually number. I don't get it. If you have gone through this process, could you share, please? Thanks
