  1. Valuable thread! I have mild depression ( am irritable a lot) and take meds for it. My oldest (ds12) has a mood disorder and my dd8 has bipolar. She is in a manic phase now which means NO sleep and we're not getting a lot done during the day. It's hard. I need to be organized, prepare ahead of time, stay as consistent as possible and... the hardest part for me... MAKE myself go to events I sign us up for. I want to cancel the day-of a lot, I'm just not up for it sometimes because of my mood or theirs. It\s not easy. Glad there are others here!
  2. Yeah, that's the thing about adopting... you never know the truth about what another person puts in their body when they are pregnant. We said yes to a lot of things, alcohol was not one of them. We have two on the FASD spectrum. One child is in public school, in Gifted and Talented classes and doing VERY well (though a little socially awkward and has behaviors that COULD be explained by his ADD). Our younger son has the rages, the melt-downs, the aggression and he's 9 some days and 3 other days. I haven't homeschooled in years but thought of this forum immediately when the reality started to sink in that I'm going to need to homeschool my 9 year old. Searching for FASD homeschooling resources with very little success. But good to know I am not alone.
  3. I sooooo needed to read this today. Just started HSing my 7yo with super-hyper ADHD and he has trouble regulating both emotions and impulses and it's REALLY hard with three neuro-typical baby girls to watch out for, too. It's just nice to be reminded this is typical for ADHD and I am not alone!!!
  4. One of the reasons my 9yo no longer homeschools is that I started to struggle with him to get the smallest amount of work done. I had to sit with him and be ON HIM at every moment in order to get anything done. Other factors contributed to us enrolling him in Public School but he started ADHD meds at the exact same time he started PS. He is in the gifted program. The meds help him focus and stay on task all day long. He is thriving. Now, he's be thriving at home on his meds, too, but he's doing so well we're allowing him to stay in PS as long as he's doing so well. I regret it EVERY DAY but I don't fight it. I have 4 younger kids to work with at home!!! :) For what it's worth, his younger brother is 6 and has the H in ADHD, two very different kids with very different needs. It's ROUGH!!!!
  5. My general feeling is that I am ALL FOR introducing my kids at an early age to the stories in an age appropriate manner so when they come by it again, they'll have some familiarity. Wishbone on PBS? Love it, my 5yo can tell me the basic concepts of several classics. Disney movies? Eh... same idea, I guess, but we usually talk about how the original stories differ. We're not very religious but we read stories from a children's bible because so much literature is based off bible stories, it's important for them to know the basics.
  6. Hi,

What is scholastic teacher express charges per month? What books are you using for 8 years from Evan moor and scholastic teacher express?

    Kindly guide me........

  7. I have both Evan Moor's Teacher's Filebox and the Scholastic Printables subscriptions. I find more at Even Moor for my 5 and 8yos. Either is a GREAT BUY, I'll renew Even Moor next year.
  8. I save all my TFB materials as pdf files so it WOULD work on the iPad... and I will be doing that now, thank you very much!! I also save all my Scholastic printables as pdf files.
  9. Foster adopt here as well. I have three kids who are the light of my life. In seven years we had kids come and go but we adopted our very first placement, then got a call for his newborn brother and just this September we adopted our daughter who also came to us as a newborn. There are miracles and heartache in adoption, no matter what road you choose. Best of luck and I am so excited to see SO MANY foster adopt homeschooling families here! I feel like I found HOME in this thread!
  10. RAD sucks. Plain and simple. :( I have 3 kids who were adopted from foster care and deal/t with RAD in our oldest who was a toddler when he came to us. Thankfully, he has been regulated for almost 4 years now (knock wood) and we're starting to deal with his ADHD (inattentive). Just big hugs. :grouphug:
  11. 8yo son adopted as a toddler, mild attachment issues, ADHD. 5yo son currently in public preK though we do a lot of K work at home. We suspect he is 2E, dx ADHD with impulse control issues, emotional developmental delays, probably other stuff going on. Super, super smart, huge vocab. Not an early reader. Planning grade three now. Going to use as much tech, screen and gadgets as I can because he responds well to that! The iPad app threads in this forum have changed my life ;) Thank you!!! Also, 24mo daughter who is picking up on all this stuff quickly. I love that!!
  12. We have an abundance of co-ops to choose from but I haven't found one I really clicked with so we're going without. My problem is that I have one child in public school preK and we were busy foster parents with many obligations until recently, so with naps and busses and other issues, it just doesn't work for us. And we're good with that! My 8yo takes TKD and gymnastics, he's happy.
  13. I think we have to use the tech gadgets kids are using. The iPad is one example. Does it really matter WHY scores improve as long as kids are more eager to do the work? My son is only 8 and I am already trying to plan 3rd grade around the iPad, the iPod Touch, the computer, Netflix, YouTube and iTunes.
