  1. I tried responding this morning (I actually would have been the first to reply), but my message was sent to the moderators for their approval (not sure what's up with that. I did have a few links, but nothing I though was "illegal" or anything, LOL!). So, we'll see if it gets posted or not. If not, I'll just PM you what I had said. Anyway, between now and then I was doing some more thinking. You son is very young and you haven't really given much explanation as to what the problem is (and you don't have to). I'm just saying.......my son didn't even talk until he was 3. When he did he had problems making certain sounds like th, tr (tr would come out like fw. Try being in a big group of people in public and a fire truck whizzes by....your kid goes berserk yelling, "fwuck, fwuck, fwuck!!" That was embarrassing ). When my youngest dd was about the same age she just suddenly started stuttering. I figured it would pass and that I wasn't going to worry about it. It went on for a few months and just about the time I finally started worrying about it....she stopped. So, I'm just saying that he is still very young. If he's mispronouncing sounds it might correct itself in another year or so. Of course, you know what your concerns are about it so maybe the problem is a more serious than that.
  2. Awwww...poor little boy. This breaks my heart just reading you tell the story. I really feel for your son and the rest of your family. I really wish I had some advice for you.....but, I don't. I'm sorry. I just wanted to post a comment to say that the teacher and assistant really need to be told that they can not be treating students like this. I don't care what they say.....this is harassment. Harassment doesn't have to be extreme......it can be constantly bothering a child about something and making him feel guilty. I don't even understand them.....do they think that bothering him about it every day and making him feel guilty was going to change his mind about the trip (or your mind about it)? I am just appalled at them....that is in no way acceptable. It might be hard to do, but they need to be told about this and I would also talk to the principal too. I strongly feel that this is not something you should just let go. I'm assuming, and I could be wrong, that you are not homeschooling (he's in K public and under your name it says you are "just visiting")......so please understand that my next comment is coming from a homeschooler's viewpoint (and this may not be your view)....but I'm gonna say it anyway: I wouldn't even send him back. He only has a month left. I'd end it right here and now. K isn't even a required class (you may want to double check your own states laws). I really feel bad for him that he has such anxiety about going back. I hope someone else can give you some good advice.
  3. Years ago I had a program called Straight Talk. I didn't use it for long, my son only needed it a little. We did benefit from it (even just the parts about where to put your tongue when saying certain sounds). A friend of mine also had it and she used it a lot with her kids. Here's a link: http://www.nathhan.com/straight.htm Sometimes you can find it used. Here's a link with one for sale: http://www.homeschoolclassifieds.com/show_search.asp?searchWords=straight+talk Here's a link to a speech therapy discussion. I haven't read through all the replies but you might get some ideas here too: http://www.homeschoolreviews.com/forums/4/thread.aspx?id=45840
  4. I guess I would have to pick Phonics. We are using McRuffy and my daughter loves it (we are using their Math and Science too). I guess why it's such a success is that my daughter is finally reading.....yippee!! She is super excited about it too. :001_smile: http://mcruffy.com/Kindergarten-Phonics.htm
  5. It is pretty hard to find. Here's the link: http://www.prometheantrust.org/usshop.htm
  6. Well, I'm not overly qualified to answer since I've only used it a tiny bit. I can't compare it to Sonlight or Winterpromise, since I haven't used those. I thought I'd really like it. There are things that I do like about it. But, I quickly realized, after using it for a short time, that it's not worth the price if you just use it as a supplement; which is what I did. I was still using many other things along with it, so I was just doing the bare necessities with it (mostly just the activity pages). If you plan on using it more exclusively, along with a math program, then you might like it better than I did. I figured, since I was already buying many other things (because I like my many other things) then it wasn't really worth it to keep using it. There is a yahoo group you can join, even temporarily, where you can get some questions asked. They often post for sale items too. HTH.
  7. I had to save for it too. It is more expensive than some....but again it's for 3 years. It's way cheaper than some though too, like Rainbow Science. The 3-6 kit is huge....just packed with stuff.
  8. Oops....double post. Server was busy and I hit button too many times.
  9. I have Addition the Fun Way, by the makers of Times Tables the Fun Way. I like it soooo much better than their Times Tables book. My 6 year old loves the stories. We read them before bed. She remembers them very well. What I like is that the numbers always represent the same thing. 3 is always a bee, 8 is always a gate, etc. In Times Tables it switches to different things, which makes it hard to remember. If someone reading this is interested in a times tables book, Memorize in Minutes the Times Tables is much better, in my opinion, than Times Tables the Fun Way because the numbers always are the same thing (2 is always a shoe, 3 is always a tree, etc). Anyway, I would recommend Addition the Fun Way.
  10. Well, I feel like I've been homeschooling forever (but I'm still always learning). We have never used a planned-out packaged curriculum. I've really never made lessons plans, although I do know that a lot of people do. I made a basic schedule of what I wanted to accomplish each day. Every day includes Reading/Phonics, Math. Usually 2 days a week are Science, a different 2 days are History, etc. I guess it is a M-F plan. I basically just get the books scheduled for that day and just do the next lesson. It's been working fine so far. Maybe others will give you suggestions on writing a more detailed lesson plan, if that's what you think you need. I will add that now that we have started workboxes I am more detailed in my planning for my K'er.
  11. Well, you can see by my signature what we are using this year for K. My dd loves everything we use. She LOVES McRuffy the most. There's probably a few other things I didn't list in the signature.....like Singapore Art (Nursery Art / Kindergarten Art....found at cbd.com), Pianimals, etc. Another favorite of my K dd are the books by Tin Man Press. They are great for critical thinking and just plain fun, fun, fun. All my kids have always loved their books. Have fun with K!
  12. The key to lookin' that good in the morning is the matching pink robe and slippers. :tongue_smilie:
  13. If you were testing your poll....it worked. :001_smile:
  14. 31 views and not one reply. No help from anyone?? :sad:Hmmmm...... Well, my daughter helped me.
  15. testing......since no one would help me.....arggggg
  16. They do look good. Thanks for sharing. Are there any samples so we can see what the books look like inside??
  17. This is probably the wrong place to post this (I'm fairly new here). I see a lot of people have cute little avatars by their name (is that what they are called....the little picture?). Where would I find one and how do I add it to my name? What if I find one that someone else has but I don't know they already have it? :blushing:
  18. These have probably already been mentioned, but here's where I shop: New: Rainbow Resource Christian Book Distributors New or used: eBay Amazon Half.com Swap Boards: Homeschool Classifieds Homeschool Reviews Well Trained Mind Vegsource Of course, if I need something more specific (like McRuffy), I go to their website too. :001_smile:
  19. I didn't even know there was one. I say you don't need it. The workbook pages are easy enough to figure out.
  20. Science Excursion http://www.scienceexcursion.com/ They might seem a little pricey, but most are for 3 years of Science.
  21. I have two suggestions of books that my daughter really enjoyed when she was younger (she's 17 now). But....I just checked at Amazon and the are is 9-12. So....these might be too young for her, but here goes..... The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles Mandy These are both written by Julie Andrews Edwards (from The Sound of Music). One of my favorites when I was young, and my daughter enjoyed it too, was The Wolves of Willoughby Chase.
  22. Thanks for this suggestion too Dorinda. I'll check into that idea too. Keep the ideas comin' people! By the way, Dorinda.....I know you've been here waaaay longer than me judging by the # of your posts. But, just a suggestion........the yellow in your signature is impossible to read. I can't tell what your ducklings are using unless I highlight it. Yellow is a nice spring color....but a pain to read. Hope you don't mind me saying so.
  23. I see. Thanks for explaining. I thought they were some discs that you held and turned or something. :blushing:
  24. Thanks for explaining. I bought the 1st grade used, so I have it all ready to go when we finish K. I guess I'll see how it goes for us. I was thinking if the readers are too long, just split up the time and maybe do one lesson in 2 days. But, maybe that won't solve the problem anyway if the workbooks don't seem to have enough repetition for you.
