  1. I had a full-time job all the way through college (undergrad and grad school), and paid my own expenses.  I took out student loans and paid them all off on my own (took me until my mid-30's to do so). My mom (single mom - dad was out of the picture) didn't pay for anything, nor did I expect her to.  DH's parents didn't pay for any of his college expenses either.

We're saving up money to help our kids with college, but that will be for tuition, room/board, and books.  My current thinking is that they will need to get jobs to pay for anything beyond that.

  2. Go to your profile (click on your name in the top right hand corner of your screen)

Click on the "Edit my profile" button (black button on right side)

Under "My Settings" click on "Display Name"

Make your changes and click on "Save Changes"

ETA: or do it Jen's way.  Much quicker.   :p

  3. This whole business is juvenile and ridiculous. I don't get the point of including the stars for people. Topics, maybe. Likes-pretty good idea. Rating PEOPLE? Stupid.

I agree. I don't even think topics/threads should be rated. I'm sure all of us regularly come across topics here that don't interest us or even annoy or offend us. So what? The best response is to ignore and move on. Not provide a "rating".

  4. Can you star the same person more than once. I just keep starring with every post and I think I starred some of ya'll like 10 times :coolgleamA:

I don't think you can. You can only star people once on their profile from what I can tell, but you can also rate threads they started which affects their rating as well.

  5. I'm in a 24" area. The second comment there sums up my experience: As a Minnesotan, I've never had a "too much snow" day. We just have "too f-ing cold" days.

That's true here too.  We take the snow in stride. School is more likely to get canceled for extreme cold.  DD is attending PS this year, and school has been canceled a few times already.  Not for snow (it was below 8" each time), but for near-zero/below zero temps.

  6. My people!   :p

I'm like this too, although I've gotten better at holding back the tears when I need to (e.g. at work).  But yes, sappy commercials, heartwarming baby or puppy videos, feelgood FB posts, etc. - I can't help it.

My go-to tricks are looking up (seems to stem the flow if you do it right away), biting my lip, and mental distraction.

That said, it's a funeral.  Let the tears flow.  :grouphug:

  7. Once upon a time I ticked someone off and they gave me 3 stars. I've been stuck there ever since. Sniff sniff.

I just gave you 5 stars, so now your average is up to 4.   :)

I had 5 stars last I checked, but I must have ticked someone off too, because now I have 4.   :001_rolleyes:

  8. Katie summed up the purpose well.

I have a Twitter account, but haven't really used it much.  However, I did find it extremely useful this past summer when we were evacuated for over a week during the Black Forest Fire.  I followed our local sheriff on Twitter to get the latest updates from the command center.

  9. I had a kidney infection which was accompanied by severe vomiting, and was rehydrated by IV.  I felt better after a few hours and they let me go after about 5-6 hours.

  10. I buy the Everyday Shea shampoo for DS: http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/p/alaffia-everyday-shea-shampoo-lavender-32-fl-oz/ai-1002?sourceType=sc&source=FG&adGroup=40-60&keyword=AI-1002&cm_mmc=Google+Shopping-_-Product+Listing+Ads-_-40-60-_-AI-1002&gclid=CKTR3ZeaobwCFc5DMgodEnUAww&gclsrc=aw.ds#.UufPUnkQHs4

Ingredients are Shea Leaf Extract, Shea Butter Soap, Virgin Coconut Oil, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Decyl Polyglucose, and Lavender Essential Oil. It's gluten free, paraben free, and synthetic fragrance free.

  11. I think people forget that you have to be over 100 miles from the east, into CO, before mountains are even visible.  lol

I've noticed over the years that eastern Colorado doesn't really exist.   ;)

I've seen evidence of eastern Colorado on a map.  So theoretically, I know it's there.   :tongue_smilie:

Just kidding.  We drive out east every once in awhile.   :)

  12. I've changed a lot over the last ten years.

Ten years ago, I was 32, working full-time and obsessed with my work and career.  While I was very successful, I didn't have balance.  I allowed work to come first, and it negatively impacted my marriage, my family, and my own emotional/physical health.  My focus and priorities were very different, and elements of my personality were too. I was the embodiment of the Type A personality -  ambitious, over-achieving, and impatient. I was much more judgmental and cared way too much about what other people thought of me (funny how those two characteristics go together). Politically, I wasn't very well informed but held very strong opinions (that's ironic too).  I had a very clear vision of what I wanted to do with my life, and did not handle variations to that plan very well.

Funny how life has a way of giving us exactly the lessons we need to learn.   :p   I never would have dreamed that at 42, I would be a stay-at-home mom of two, and homeschooling one of them (I homeschool DS - DD is in PS-K this year).   After a terrible year in preschool, it became clear that a traditional school environment was not going to work for DS (he was diagnosed with Asperger's a few years later).  That's what brought us to homeschooling.  It felt like my life was being turned upside-down - and it was.  But leaving work to stay home and homeschool is the best thing that ever could have happened to me.  It's made me a better person.  I now put my marriage and my children first, I'm much more patient and kind, I'm more relaxed, and I'm infinitely less judgmental.  I'm a better wife, a better mom, a better daughter, and a better friend.  Some of my views and positions have shifted significantly as well, in terms of my faith and politics.  I'm able to see more gray now, whereas ten years ago I saw everything in black and white.

The only thing I miss about the me from ten years ago are my rock hard abs.  Once I miss them enough to do something about it, I'll work on getting them back.   ;)
