  1. My kids are little. They get a few colds a year, never turns into infections or anything like that. We really only visit the dr. for well-checks, if that. My husband get sick about once a year, I rarely get sick... I don't even catch the kids' colds. We have a little hay-fever right now, which is being controlled with homeopathic meds, sinus flushes, etc. If you are concerned, I would really look into healing your and your family's gut. :) A good, healthy gut will promote a healthy immune system. Something to look into for your whole family: good probiotics lots of vitamin C cod liver oil and cut out refined carbs...those do a number on the whole body.
  2. I only buy what I can't find from other places or if I need something in a pinch: local pastured eggs cultured/pastured butter coconut oil San Marzano tomatoes grass-fed poultry or beef (if we're out of our 1/4 cow) Kombucha sprouted wheat pasta organic snacks/cookies for outings or trips (if i didnt bake them myself) sprouted wheat bread products organic whole milk yogurt Thai Kitchen coconut milk and other condiments lacto-fermented condiments like pickles, sauerkraut, kimchi, salsa, dressing
  3. We used SWR (Spell to Write and Read) for phonics. The results were amazing. DD started reading a 4, but her reading exploded after we were using SWR for a few months. We used first readers from the library and classic vintage readers as well. we also use Queen's Language Lessons and writing letter so penpals. :D
  4. This made me so sad. This poor little girl has such a screwed up view of what real beauty is... and it comes from her own mother. Talk about emotional and even physical abuse?! I certainly hope, in this case, that social services does a complete evaluation of the mother and daughter. That does not seem like a safe environment for the little girl. What is with society these days? Why can't we just let our kids be KIDS!??!?
  5. I ordered wheat berries from Azure Standard. If you have a drop point near you, it's definitely worth joining!
  6. I am using Easy Mazes, Coloring, and Tracing for our 4yo DS. He loves them, but I do have to limit him to just a few pages at a time, or else he'd be done in 20 minutes. I forgot about the cutting/pasting. I should pick that up!
  7. I have the Professional and I love it. The larger bowl is nice for big batches of cookies. :D I've had my mixer for 10 years and use it weekly! Still like brand new.
  8. found another link fo you... http://www.mobimotherhood.org/MM/article-diet.aspx (I am a complete Lactivist...)
  9. Oatmeal and nutritional yeast flakes help too!
  10. have you checked out Kellymom.com? Here's a link for you. :grouphug: http://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/low-supply.html
  11. I went to PS and remember diagramming sentences in school. Unfortunately, I don't remember all parts of speech, but DH certainly does (he went to private Christian school all his yrs)
  12. We are not close to being done, and plan on going year round. My original plan was to be done mid-June. That is NOT going to happen. Looks like we'll be finished in early Aug. I HOPE! :001_huh:
  13. :grouphug: I am so sorry that you have to deal with all of this, on top of LOSING YOUR FIL. Ugh... families can be so difficult in the midst of trials. I hope that your DH and MIL have a good drive back and can remember the good times with FIL.
  14. Here is a great site for meal planning. I clicked on the tag "menu plans" for you, so you can scroll thru and see what she has planned for each week for the past several weeks. She includes recipe links as well. http://heavenlyhomemakers.com/category/menu-plans Here are a few more faves: http://www.passionatehomemaking.com/2008/05/freezer-meals-chicken-divan.html lasagna enchiladas chicken pot pie creamy chicken, rice, broccoli casserole
  15. we bake bacon here as well! We like ours extra crispy. Uncured Applewood Smoked Bacon... so yum! Thick slices: 375F for about 30 min. You have to watch it tho... it can burn quick. Try brushing it with maple syrup halfway thru cooking. OMG! :D
  16. We spend about $600/month for our family of 5. We only eat local organic produce, local grass-fed meat and poultry, organic dairy, raw milk, organic grains. Here is what we do to save $$: 1.) grow as many herbs and vegetables that we can 2.) Buy in bulk or from co-op. We buy a lot from Azure Standard. 3.) I shop once a week for milk, butter, produce, etc. from the farmers market or Trader Joe's. 4.) I bake our own snacks including crackers, cookies, and other treats. 5.) we do not buy pre-packaged meals. 6.) we purchase 1/4 cow at a time for our beef. 7.) we have chickens for eggs. We have lots of friends who own chickens for eggs, so we can buy off of them if we don't have enough. 8.) Batch cooking and freezing! 9.) Homemade broth, homemade yogurt 10.) MEAL PLANNING!!!! This saves me time and $$ I do not clip coupons. I don't have time for that.
  17. we got rid of the cat. But in all seriousness, can you move the litter box to the garage? We had a closed litter box with a mat in front. That helped a great deal.
  18. I am so sorry that you are going through this. My DH & I (newlyweds at the time) went through that in the church I had been attending for 21 yrs ( was a baby!). We left and prayed for the LORD to lead us to the right church. After a lot of tears we found a place and have been there for almost 11 yrs! :grouphug: Praying for healing, forgiveness, and reconciliation.
  19. We just got our first Mac in the fall. WILL NEVER GO BACK TO PC. NEVER. Like the PPs stated, Macs are self sufficient, easy to use, fast, no viruses, etc. They are an investment, but rightly so. Macs have been known to last for a very long time.
  20. It sounds like you might have a tummy bug. I am like you, my tummy gets gassy and crampy right before my period comes. If I were you, I would steer clear from sugar as that is hard on the tummy. Go to the PLAIN yogurt first. Probiotics are best. If you feel dehydrated, stay away from sports drinks. They are loaded with sugar. Coconut water is VERY good and has plenty of electrolytes without the added sugar. My suggestion: GOOD probiotics toast with pastured butter banana PLAIN whole-milk yogurt homemade bone broth dairy or water kefir, or other lacto-fermented beverage (these have probiotics) WATER Coconut Water (not juice)
  21. We are saving thru DH's 401K and I have a little in mine when I worked prior to kids. We are also saving thru an IRA and all 3 kids have savings accts that we put $ into each month. Things are tight here, but we feel best if our $ is being saved for the future. My parents were always good with their money. Both are now retired have no debt at all. Their house is paid off, cars paid with cash, and have $$ in the bank, with retirement coming each month. My parents always were SUPER FRUGAL with their money, but were still able to give us what we needed as we were growing up. :)
