There are quite a few listed on Your Free Homeschool. -
Raise your hand if you gave up on schoolwork this week.

I used the excuse that I was sick, but yeah, I gave up after my doctor's appointment Wednesday. -
Hour of Code-anyone else doing this?
happymomofboys replied to Catherine's topic in General Education Discussion Board
My kids are doing it and enjoying it very much. They also made an animated Christmas card with this Hour of Code activity from Learnstreet. -
My Scotch laminator is packed up in storage so I'm snagging this one to use while we're staying with my mom. Thanks for the heads up!

So out of curiosity...

College drop out with a high school diploma. -
A couple of times I have, in all seriousness, told my oldest that I would enroll him in school if his behavior continued to be a distraction to my being able to teach his younger brother. I never make a threat I'm not 100% willing to follow through on, so he knows I'm serious and so far it hasn't had to come to that. I wouldn't make such a decision lightly, but both of my children deserve the best education I can provide, and if one of my kids doesn't want to learn, I'm not going to let that prevent me from being able to teach the other.

So annoyed! Property manager is an idiot!
happymomofboys replied to Renthead Mommy's topic in The Chat Board
"People have been shot for less." I am trying to imagine a scenario where this would be the appropriate thing to say to an unfamiliar person outside of some type of gun safety training. I am pro-2nd amendment and was raised in a family of gun owners, but we never talked about the possibility of a person being shot so casually. -
Savannah, Georgia--Where should we stay? Any areas to avoid?
happymomofboys replied to Harriet Vane's topic in The Chat Board
If you can fit it in your budget, definitely stay in the downtown historic district. -
Looks like we will be getting a refund, so that's a relief.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I really appreciate the outside perspective. We've decided he'll be grounded from electronics, but not from spending time with his friends, and that he will have to repay us by doing extra chores and giving up his can money for awhile.

This is possible, and I've been doing my best to shelter both of the kids from a lot of the difficult things going on, but some of it is unavoidable. He doesn't get an allowance right now, but he has been allowed to turn in cans for money. I have still purchased little surprises for him over the last year when I find deals so that he wouldn't feel like he was being deprived. I've tried to make his life remain as normal as possible for as long as possible, but some things like if we have to move, we're not going to have a choice about.

My husband already feels guilty for not locking down his computer before he went to bed. He forgot and ds took advantage of the opportunity. I don't blame my husband. It was an honest mistake.

It was a game on Dad's FB.

Already trying that, haven't received any information yet.

I don't blame dh at all. I was just sharing that he feels responsible and has taken measures with FB and the bank to deal with it.

When I was in elementary school I had the same teacher for everything except P.E. and Music. I did go to GATE which had a different teacher and due to my weight, I was given an extra P.E. class in the library with other chubby kids where we did exercise to a video. When I moved in 3rd grade, I had the same teacher all day for every class, until 5th grade when we had pods where several classes all shared a common space (that was awful, btw) and some instruction was shared between teachers. When we moved that year, my next school actually had two grade levels sharing one classroom. The following year, I spent half the day with one teacher and the other half of the day with another and had to change classrooms. Then I moved to a new state in 7th grade and that was the first time I changed classes for each period, but we were divided into teams all on one corridor, so the same group of students all had the same teachers.

Confessions of a Latin Failure

I think a little Latin is better than none. :) If we were talking about a younger student, my advice would be different. -
Confessions of a Latin Failure
happymomofboys replied to Tresta's topic in High School and Self-Education Board
If Latin hasn't been a priority for you in the past, I don't see how making it a high priority now is going to make a difference to her. By high school, she's the one who needs to embrace Latin because there are only so many hours and to pursue Latin means taking time that could be used to pursue something else. I am a firm believer in Latin being central to my students' curriculum, but I also recognize that many, many successful college students and professionals never took Latin and are doing just fine in life. Make sure she gets her roots, prefixes, suffixes and SAT vocabulary down, of course, but don't feel guilty if Latin isn't for you or your daughter. -
My kids are still young, but I think I'll do what my mother has done. When it has to do with her kid (me), she speaks up. When it has to do with my kids, she stays silent unless her opinion is requested.

I watched it when it was first released when I was in high school, so I was about 16 I guess. I wouldn't have a problem with my boys watching it whenever we cover the play because, if I recall correctly, it is true to the script despite the modern setting and props and the modern interpretation makes it understandable even to those who don't easily "get" Shakespeare. I wouldn't use it as a substitute for a more traditional viewing, especially a live theater performance if possible, but I would love to compare and contrast the modern interpretation with the traditional one. So I would guess if we were to cover it anywhere from late middle school to early high school, I'd be cool with it.

When we're outside, we're guests in their home, and we leave them alone. If they invade our home, then all bets are off. The only exception is mosquitoes. Mosquitoes must die.
