  1. Last year with WWS1, I printed the entire student text and I kept the teacher text on my Ipad.  It worked out OK, but I really didn't like having to print it all out.  This year I put the pdf on OneNote.  He reads it on the Ipad, (since it is easier on the eyes) and then comes to the computer to type out the lesson.  So far it's working great but we're only on week 1!

  2. Is there a sample of Writing With Skill Level 2 available?

I emailed Patti to see if I could get a sample of the first few weeks, because we start school next week and I didn't want to wait to get started. She said they will be posting the table of contents and the first ten weeks online prior to publication, but she didn't say when that would be. Kind of a bummer since that throws writing off for us. It is nice that they give such a generous sample though.

Hopefully someone more "in the know" will reply to you. I think people were testing all last year.

  3. I've had a front loader for about 5 years now, since our old top loader died.  I don't like it.  All of our clothes get little holes in them, especially the thinner t-shirts.  If I forgot something and want to throw it in I can't just open the lid and toss it in, I have to wait for it to stop and unlock the door.  I can't really soak a big load, since not all of the clothes are wet.  It gets a musty smell if its a hot day and I accidentally leave them in too long.  I don't feel as though my clothes get cleaner (shirts still smell like deoderant in the pits sometimes!)

  4. Hello everyone!  You all were so helpful last year when I needed help planning my road trip to Arizona, I thought I'd ask again.  We're starting our trip driving straight up to Beaverton where my DH sister lives, but we will only be there for one night before we continue.  I know we definitely want to do the Space Needle and the Underground tour in Seattle.  That whole area looks so pretty on Google maps, but I really don't know what the 'must see' places are.  We have about 7 days for Seattle/Victoria Island before starting our way back south.  My DH wants to see Vancouver, but I don't know what is there.  Is it just like any other big city?

Any help or suggestions will be appreciated!  Even pointing me to a website or two would be lovely!

  5. I'm so sorry! It could have been heart worms. My sisters cat just died a few months ago from that. He went from perfectly normal, to dead within 5 minutes. They had a necropsy done because they thought it was poison. The vet told them that cats with heart worm act completely normal, and then just die.

  6. Ok, this isn't what you are looking for, but I can't help plugging Dava Sobel's book The Planets. No pictures, and it could be a RA or on IR, or you can get the book on cd- the voice doing the reading is great. I adore this book! It treats the solar system planet by planet, and talks about mythology, discovery, etc. It's really magical.

Thank you, listening to it now and I think I already have some books narrated by that same woman. Her voice is nice and soothing. I really like to have a book in front of me, so I might have to get the used copy on Amazon for a penny :001_smile:

  7. If she has long hair you could keep it braided, or at least semi contained in a ponytail. Also, I have heard that tea tree oil keeps them away. If I were you, I would get a really good lice comb (Lice Meister is a good one) and run it through her hair once a week.

  8. Thank you! I will be sure to get those Magic School Bus titles from the library. I know my dd loves them. We are getting some Seymour Simon titles as well.

That National Geographic book looks awesome! That is just what I was wanting for keeping open to browse and pique their curiosity.

  9. We are starting a 6 week unit on Astronomy, and would LOVE some good book suggestions. I have a few already, but I'm not finding what I'm looking for. I really want something like Smithsonian Rocks and Gems, or The Elements, but about Space. This is what I currently have:

How It Works: How the Universe Works

    Basher Science Astronomy

Janice Van Cleave's Astronomy for Every Kid

Kingfisher Solar System for Young Kids

Georges Secret Key to the Universe

Also various library books (lets read and find out, etc..)

Something with a lot of good pictures would be fantastic!

    Thank you!

  10. Our Troop is something like 80 dollars for rechartering, no required fundraisers. The troop gets paid for cleaning trash twice a year from the city (two specific weekend long events). It's voluntary though and that pays for all the monthly expenses (all camping trips, etc are paid for by troop except for the weeklong BSA camps).

The pack was different though. I think it was around 60 for rechartering, a weekly den fee (one dollar), and they highly encouraged popcorn sales although it was not required.

What gets pricey is the week long BSA camp. They went out of district and it was 385 dollars for Saturday to Saturday!!!

  11. Maybe you could leave Flagstaff on Friday and go home through Zion? It's gorgeous!

That's what I think we might do, since everyone has suggested seeing it. I really like the idea of the kids earning the Junior Ranger Badges, too.

Thank you everyone for all the good suggestions! I honestly didn't know there were so many neat places to see in northern Arizona besides the Grand Canyon.

  12. Thanks everyone for all the good suggestions. I think I have a good picture of what we will do. Saturday we will drive to Vegas, Sunday meander to flagstaff. Monday south rim of grand canyon. Tuesday petrified forest. Wednesday Montezemas well and Castle, maybe see what else is around there. Thursday Lowell Observatory. Friday I don't know ye, but Saturday we will leave super early and spend the whole day driving home.

I really wish we had more time, but it will be fun. We have a lofty goal of taking the kids to each state before my oldest is in college. We did Oregon last year, and Minnesota a few years ago. At this rate we wont make it, lol.

I know I have typos but I'm on the iPad and doing the one fingered typing.

  13. We are planning a trip in a few weeks to see the Grand Canyon, and I desperately need help with the other parts. We know we want to see Hoover Dam and the Four Corners. What else is a must see in that general area? We're coming from about an hour south of Sacramento, Ca. I was thinking maybe taking the first day to drive to Vegas and stay there for our first night. Then the following morning it will be a short drive to Hoover Dam....and then what?? LOL We only have a week, so the first and last Saturdays are pretty much driving days.

Would you plan for 2 days seeing the Grand Canyon or just one? Also, is there anything neat to see near 4 corners, or would that be a round about loop taking us nowhere else? I don't have my heart set on it so we can possibly take that part out. We don't really want to explore So Cal, just Nevada and Arizona.

    Thanks!

  14. Our scoutmaster is very supportive of the boys doing other activities. Team sports are especially encouraged. That being said, camping and outings are absolutely required to move up in rank. The boys know this and it's their choice. Scoutmaster conferences are only held during campouts, and the boys know this. He has told the boys if they want to get their Eagle scout at 13 or 14, yet rarely do any activities they should join a different troop. I happen to agree with this, and even with all the requirements our troop has 13 eagles since they started 9 years ago.
