  1. So a perspective unrelated to family: Many years ago I ran into my favorite teacher. While we chatted I asked if she still lived on ------ (name of street across from high school). Her response "oh no! We found that a townhouse was much too small for two retired people." Then she went on to name a neighborhood with very large single family homes. I thought it was funny, but I guess they both had projects separate from each other and wanted space in the home to pursue them. Additionally, she's the type of person I'd be surprised setting up her life to revolve around grandkids. She's definitely involved. Her younger grandkids attend the high school her DS attended (a year ahead of me). She goes to every football game to watch grandson in the band. So the message I get from that is set up your retirement home how you feel comfortable, not based on expectation that grandkids and others will visit often. Having such expectation can become a disappointment. In my foo, my grandparents laid guilt trips on having space and wanting us to see them. That made us hate visiting.
  2. I knew that. The OP asked about spatters. I don't care whether bacon curls. As long as it's bacon. Mmmmm. I'm going to have to try oven baking bacon.
  3. Any weight that you can place directly on the bacon in the pan that covers most of a slice can be used. I don't use one. I don't see how it would reduced spatter. It won't be covering all of the pan.
  4. Love HP here. Read books multiple times, watched movies over and over. Listened to books the whole 12 hour drive there and 12 hours back. We spent three days at Universal and did park-to-park tickets and would absolutely do it that way again.
  5. Incredible scum. He wants to over turn the conviction and get off the sex offender registry. The witnesses were grad students from Sweden. Have they left the country. How hard would it be to get them to another trial?
  6. Wasn't she just born. She's no longer a little baby? We still have our Brio trains and Brio compatible trains made in Germany. Got lots of play. We added track and cars over various holidays and could build trains weaving all over. My parents didn't save the one we had in the late 60s, but I remember it fondly, so I decided I had to save the set my family has now. I didn't get Thomas the tank engine even though it was compatible with Brio. At the time (20 years ago), Brio was still making their trains in Sweden. The Thomas trains were made in China, but cost the same. Since they were the same price I felt better about Brio because I figured workers in Sweden were getting a living wage. I have no idea where any of these toys are made today.
  7. Quill sounds like your DD would talk to you or at least you think she would. No way I would have told my parents if I were assaulted. 1)My mother never spoke to me about menstruation, let alone sex, relationships, etc. 2) in college I was supposed to figured it out, whatever "it" was. So speaking to mom and dad ran counter to that. In general if I did consult them whatever I was doing was wrong or not enough so if something this horrible happened I would not expect their compassion. I would expect something along the lines of I did something that made the assault happen. 3) I had a bad roommate situation my first year (very bad) and my dad told me not to rock the boat with university officials. I don't think all parents will jump in a supportive manner to their dds.
  8. Nope not the same. David Letterman was not a subordinate to Drew Barrymore. She was not in a position to affect his career. In fact he probably was in a position to hurt hers. The reason why most actors go on shows like Letterman's is to promote themselves and whatever current project they have. For all we know Letterman may have been able to say she could never come on his show again--that isn't something he would have to publicize. .
  9. cool. Except now I see I completely misdirected a package to her in 2012. That was an incredibly stressful year and I guess I wasn't able to track packages and I guess I was completely frustrated when Christmas got closer and didn't have stuff I expected. But now looking back and seeing that I sent that stuff to my sister in law's family, SIL must have thought I was totally crazy and wondered why I sending this weird collection of random stuff. Today, I ordered her two small family games and a magic trick collection for my nephew. I think that will not seem random.
  10. Can I look through old orders by shipped to address. I'm trying to find what games and things I've sent my SIL and her family in the past. I know I can sift through several years of orders looking for what I've shipped directly to them. It would be so much easier if I could say I want to see only orders I've sent directly to X, eliminating my home and various places my kids have been.
  11. I fill stockings except mine. Everyone gets something different. Stockings in our house have always been a small fun gift related to that child. For instance, DD 20 really likes the character Harly Quinn. So she is getting a small Lego set featuring that character. Younger ds is getting a small game. Older ds I still need to figure out. One year he got a mug onto which you can add legos. I get dh something too. It took dh a few years to figure out that no one put anything in my stocking. The dog gets a stocking and dd fills it. Now dh adds candy to all the stockings. He doesn't look for a small gift for me. So now I get not great candy I don't need. Everyone else gets that plus something special I picked. Anyway, that's my gripe about stockings. Sorry for the tangent.
  12. Completely off topic. But I need to find some Johnny Cash
  13. Good luck! Job hunting stinks. I hope you find a good fit!
  14. I would do sheer black hose. I live where temps can range from 20-50 in December, with my d 30s being likely.
  15. I'm glad this stuff is starting to really be examined. My DD is 20. Hopefully, she will have better work environments because of the fallout. I know people loved Mad Men. I tried to watch the show. Then I asked my MIL and my godmother about it. They don't know each other. Both had professional level jobs (college professor and political campaign analyst for national elections) beginning in the late 50s. Both said they watched half an episode and turned it off. They said it was a terrible time for women and work and they didn't need to see it glorified on TV. Hopefully entertainment stops portraying this stuff as cute or funny.
  16. I think it's ok to consume things you can afford, no matter what your income level. I don't think it's ok to consume and brag about it. If you are doing YouTube videos of yourself trashing items rather than using (pouring bottles of champagne on watches) then that is a problem. If your family has a special celebration and serves good champagne at the party, then I don't see any reason to object. I have friends with very high incomes. They don't find a way to show off new things or activities. It's just how they live. It doesn't bother me when I see they have a new car. They use their stuff. They don't buy a new car and purposely trash it even though they can. I don't think a brand is necessarily a mark of consumption. If it's a good quality and gets used I'm not sure what the argument is.
  17. That kind of makes the topic off limits. The problem isn't limited to entertainment or business. There are many political figures involved. The way political figures do their business affects our lives.
  18. A half to full size small among members of my family.
  19. She started at a time when I'm sure she has lots of experience with harassment.
  20. Now I want a Ben and Jerry's truck to hand out ice cream on my street.
  21. They'd be crazy to MK in there. I think they are trying to figure out what to do with her. The ratings for 9 am tanked from the first week she started. I think they will find another man. The 7 am and 8 am hours have mostly been a male anchor/host and female anchor/host: Matt and Savanah Matt and Ann Katie and Matt Bryant and Katie Jane and Bryant
  22. I think the president thinks he's teflon on this. I also think, he probably believes his behavior is not harassment, even though the behavior of other people doing the same thing is.
  23. Yeah. If you recall Billy Bush was fired tapes showing him with a celebrity who later became a candidate and president. Billy Bush was participating in a vulgar conversation, not actually leading. I'm not condoning such conversations. The person he had the conversation with -- more vulgar conversant -- was elected. I suspect NBC has known about the Matt Lauer thing a while. They are putting it out as a one off they learned about last night. My guess is last night they learned there was serious evidence that could not be covered up. Evidence the likely makes the whole NBC organization look bad. A swift firing is done to keep others from looking deeper and seeing more.
  24. If they aren't, they are arrogant and becoming more emboldened in their behavior.
  25. If the thread isn't a rant against wealth (I didn't think it was) is it that people handle wealth differently and based on Quill's background this other family's approach feels like flaunting and that makes Quill uncomfortable. It might not be that. Clearly, we don't know the other family. I think sometimes there are people who make us feel "off". It's a gut reaction and it's hard to put out specific details to validate the feeling to others. Sometimes it's best not to try to explain since it's hard to put personal history into context. So, go with your gut, you know your family and your kid.
