  1. Those stick figures are cute, but they always make me nervous. Especially the ones showing a single mom, or on obviously military cars (because the husband is possibly deployed and therefore not around to get in the way). Creeps me out. All someone would have to do is follow the family home, note the address, and come back that night. They know exactly how many people are in the house, the husband isn't at home (or not in the picture), etc. Yikes.
  2. You can hurt daylilies? Heck, I've tried and never been successful. I suspect that they're just pouting and will perk up soon.
  3. I watch Grey's off and on and turned the episode off last night. Too intense for me, by myself. Forget my DD. Grrrr on the babysitter for not having common sense.
  4. :banghead::banghead::banghead: AAAIIIIGGGHHH! I just moved from Virginia to Texas, was registered for the HEAV conference, just had a conversation with DH where I agreed not to try to fly back for the thing even though I really really want to. I had a hotel reservation at the Marriott, was tag-teaming babysitting with my SIL. We had the whole thing worked out until this move happened. Now this?!?! I could just scream. :willy_nilly: I WANNA GO!!:auto:
  5. Congratulations! The girls' section is so much fun. I also have a tomboy in a tutu - and don't try to tell her that stripes and polka dots don't "go" together. You're going to have a blast with your little princess, protected by all her knights! Hooray!!
  6. Clean the incisions! I didn't get proper instructions from my oral surgeon when mine were removed while home from college (all four, bony impacted) and they got infected and the infection exploded into my mouth when I was back at school. Found out THEN that I should have been swishing salt water every few hours to clean the incisions. I could have killed the original surgeon. No one said anything to me or my mom at the time! Soft foods - pudding, jello, yogurt, milkshakes. Don't remember what else I ate. I looked like the Godfather's daughter for about a week (all jowly and swollen) but it didn't hurt too badly. Even the infection didn't hurt, just freaked me out. I think the dentist I went to at school gave me a little syringe to squirt the salt water into the incisions to make sure I really got them clean.
  7. I've read most, but not all, the pages and responded too. I never intended my responses to be hostile (well, maybe the one about Sherman, but I meant it as jest, too!). I hope I didn't offend y'all! If so, my apologies!
  8. See how they're doing, but if they're still groggy from surgery keeping them together might be good. They'll be confused and upset enough as it is, separating them might make them agitated and more rambunctious.
  9. Just bought mine too. Can't wait to get these books all listed in one place. Physical organization - well, that's going to have to wait until we build/acquire more shelves...
  10. Strangely enough, it seems to vary by region as to which is cheaper on some items. I just came from SE Virginia where Sam's was good quality and cheaper than Costco (which had very good quality but very high prices). Here in Texas it seems that Costco is cheaper. At least, it's cheaper than Virginia Costco and the quality makes any price differential worthwhile. Hope that made sense, I'm having an off day...
  11. Actually - not anymore. They now charge for mileage on top of the $19.99 rental. And they don't carry trucks at many locations. We learned this the hard way when we sold my truck. That being said, I would still sell the truck if you have options for borrowing one. We didn't, and we've regretted the sale ever since.
  12. Just don't name a dog "Sherman" if you ever plan to live in Georgia! :tongue_smilie:
  13. Sure. Was slavery despicable? Of course. Were they all fighting to own slaves? Absolutely not. My great-grandfather (do the math on that one - I'm not old) was a civil war soldier. He fought for his farm, for his family, because he was "supposed" to as a man living in the south. My great-grandmother was still receiving pension checks in 1952 for his service in the Confederate Army. I have no idea who was funding them, but they look governmental (I have a copy of one in a book).
  14. MIL works at a university hospital. I went there for consultation on my back (three spinal fusions, torn discs, fractured pedicles, etc.). They were awesome. Treated me well, were knowledgeable. I say go. You can always decline treatment. Good luck!
  15. WONDERFUL ideas! Thank you so much! I really like noting in the book that it has been logged into LT. I will need that with my very helpful preschooler re-arranging my books. I spent 45 minutes yesterday looking for a book she had re-shelved for me - on a different bookcase in another room.:tongue_smilie:
  16. :bigear: Does anyone have tips for physically organizing books like the OP is also interested in? I ask because I just moved to a new house and am merging my husband's library (all mixed up because of boxes) with my library that was in storage for 4 years (long story). And I also have a very helpful preschooler:tongue_smilie:. It's not that I'm not interested in the cataloging software - I've signed up for LibraryThing and will probably order the scanner, but the physical organization remains a befuddlement for me. What makes LOC categories better than Dewey? Is there something better category-wise? I need more shelves - we are currently shelving three deep on what we've got. I have two large shelves to put together, but suspect that will only get the ones on the floor off. The triple stacks will remain. I still have boxes of books left to open! I'm not sure I want to know how many we have. Not trying to hijack, hope I'm not....
  17. Trust her instincts/gut/sense. I have a little one who just "knows" things and it freaks me out, but she's always right. We have family members who know things. My mom can tell about a person instantly. I can too. Both of us would avoid one man at church and nothing you could tell us would change our minds. We kept children away from him. Turns out he was a pedophile - and no one knew. For all the world he looked like a family man. Little ones aren't conditioned to ignore their sense about things. Teach her to honor it, even if it seems odd. You never really know, but I think she does.
  18. I am so sorry for your loss. You and your family are in my prayers.
  19. I'm not sure there is one, except that the homeschool curriculum has some kind of IG that the regular program doesn't have. This is what my SIL determined when she called to get information on the programs. I could be wrong though.
  20. I'm guessing this doesn't exist from the silence. So.... Does it make sense to compile one? Or are the books on all the lists already known to be different and therefore such a list would be pointless?
  21. I can't be the only one who's thought of this.... Is there anywhere on the web a "master" list of reading lists/book lists? What I mean is, has anyone done an analysis or comparison of the books recommended on AO, WTM, Read-Aloud Handbook, Honey for a Child's Heart, etc.? I wonder if books show up repeatedly, if a frequency analysis would show that "Goodnight Moon" (bad example, but all I can think of at the moment) is on AO, WTM, Trelease's list, but not on Honey for a Child's Heart? Does this make sense? Does this exist? If not, I'm seriously considering doing it as my summer project as I go crazy when someone recommends another website's excellent book list and I wonder if those books are new or repeats of other books I've been recommended. Yes, I think of strange things at 3am when I can't sleep....
  22. Great thread! Thank you! My DD (also called the Kitten!) is also expressing interest in anything musical and I was trying to think of operas that she might like. Thanks for the tips!
  23. Thank you so much for all your ideas, suggestions, etc. I have read every one of them and filed them away for reference. I am taking a much more relaxed approach. We will be doing B4FIAR along with many of the books from the SL P3/4 reading list. Mudpies & Magnets fun will be Daddy/Daughter time (he loves that stuff). The rest will be play, play, play, and play. If I can find an outside preschool for group play, great. Turns out we've settled in the world's most expensive preschool area in the world. $11,000/year for Preschool?! I don't think so! I'm looking at more affordable options! Thank you again for reminding me that this is a precious time and not to waste it doing strict school when she really just wants to "read", be read to, rearrange her blocks and trains, kick the ball, and "cook" in her kitchen! Hope
