  1. Let me know what you decide - so do update us. :) I am fighting with this myself in another subject. This is a highly suggested course of study for high school, but often not implemented by the PS system. I began researching this some time ago. By far, that syllabus and outline was what I found to be very doable as an elective, but I wonder if it should not somehow be related to culture too and not just a study of the actual religion. Curious to see what you do!
  2. Yes, she may CLEP later down the road (her desire, but not sure of the follow through), but I want to leave that open as an option because of the subject matter that she wishes to cover. Sorry for being so choppy ... but here are some more details. Now, I want to cram a general overview of key topics with the environmental science because they are IMO really needed to advance the understanding of the relationships. You would have to know her to know why more is always better. I feel like I am not addressing chem and physical science enough either, but I think that can easily be solved by a library trip. The Lifepac sets are very informative and dd works through them very quickly (which is why we only use them as a supplement for enrichment). I believe that these will make up for where we rabbit trailed in the past. I did pick from the list of suggested textbooks - I really liked Living in the Environment as it seemed to address my core objectives for the environmental science relative to the study of natural science subject matter, which is our relationship to nature and nature's relationship to us. What do you think? Honors Environmental Science - hmmm ... does it meet the typical criteria to be called such? I have not had a child want so much science. Should I split it on paper maybe? I could split. I could give 1/2 credits, but dd would finish the semester's work in something like 6 weeks at the most for life, astronomy, and geology. I probably should mention that she took best in category and first place at the state science fair too, LOL. This was last year when she went back to school for a year. In her words ... "Gah, mom they don't really even do science!" She was accustomed to Elemental Science too. BTW Barron's for reference for me to get a quick refresher and for her to use to study should she decide to move forward with the test. I picked this up cheap. It will help make tests and quizzes as well. I am here because this is just feels like a ... m.e.s.s. What should I do with it? And yes, be very opinionated and point out any or all of my flaws in this. :) Tell me what you think. I will not be hurt. I have to do something even if I split it and put off actual environmental science as an elective subsequent to this year's study. On second thought, I will just let her claim the 1/2 credit for life science, astronomy, and geology and be done with it. The more I think about this, the messier I could make it, LOL. Soooo ..... blah! She will earn 1.5 credits in science, and be done. I will send her off to write more instead. I feel a Nanowrimo may fit in nicely and encourage her to explore the other side of her brain.
  3. Scroll through this ... http://www.darienps.org/current/curriculum/COMPARATIVE-WORLD-RELIGION-CURRICULUM-GUIDE-Final1011curr.pdf There is an entire course outline with references. It teaches the more modern scope and does not look at it from an anthropological perspective either. However, that is where I am torn. Should it be Religion and Culture? Probably. The two are not exclusive. HTH
  4. While the intent is to study for the AP exam too, I want a good cram of some science topics, but with a different focus. Title: Natural Science Description: This course offers a wide range of physical and biological science content. The student will observe the blurring of boundaries between the different sciences and study a variety of subjects, including astronomy, geology, and life sciences. The content emphasizes the relationships between nature and humanity, as well as the principles and ideas of the place of humanity in nature and nature in humanity, i.e. basic principles of ecology, environmental impacts and considerations, and interaction and contribution of evolution. The student will focus on vocabulary, memory work, diagramming and sketching, experimentation, research and writing. The student is required complete one science fair project. Resources: Lifepac Select: Astronomy, Alpha Omega Lifepac Select: Geology, Alpha Omega Lifepac Select: Life, Alpha Omega Living in the Environment: Principles, Connections, and Solutions, Cole Publishing Additional Reference Texts: The Kingfisher Science Encyclopedia Usborne Illustrated Dictionary of Science Barron's AP Environmental Science, Barron's Educational Series Additional reading supplements will be borrowed and assigned as needed or interest dictates. What do you think?
  5. I had not seen you in so long that I wondered what you were doing lately. Great to hear!
  6. I am creating a highschool credit for a course: Music Theory and Instruction It will consist of BJU's Guitar and the Eseentials of Music Theory set. It seems to be well received, but I am looking for some WTM encouragement on use. :) Feedback please. Other choices?
  7. Oh ... geesh, I used "youtube guncraft"... https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&es_th=1&ie=UTF-8#q=utube%20guncraft
  8. http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=7718&game=Guncraft Google "guncraft gameplay video" It looks like there is some language in it too. It is a first-person shooter game. You shoot at each other and things.
  9. I still have a couple hundred squares to go. I am so not even ready to start. I am seriously considering an entire first week of library and reading!
  10. 122. When you show up with swollen lips and red splotches on the sides of your mouth, do not ask me why you are going to time out. I have eyes in the back of my head and MOM-ESP. I know you were sucking your fingers and ruining all of that great dental work that I had to pay for over the years! Be glad it is not a minute for every dollar that I spent.
  11. Aulos is what we have, an alto and soprano. Love them. I appreciate the pieces when cleaning. Much, much easier.
  12. Ouch ... When I used them, they were introduced to me as a resource. For that, I adored them, and with that same child I would purchase and use them again! Keep in mind that I do not use the higher levels and that my experience is with the everything before pre-algebra - I can't believe that this would be enough. I could be wrong, and the books could have been rewritten to follow a norm of math content. :) For us, they would never have been enough to succeed in math. I am not even using them now as a matter of fact. Dd is doing well with MM, and I am a mathy person. Perhaps I am biased?
  13. LoF is a tool, not a math program or math book meant for teaching math. It is an addition to your math lessons. I have used many levels, and nope, I would never use it alone. There are too many core arithmetic standards and problem-solving skills that need to be covered.
  14. The key is the credibility and recognition of the site, book, or database, not the number or location of the information. The internet rules are ... 1. If no author is found for the article or page, you don't use it unless you have a well-known and credible institution, corporation, etc. behind the site. 2. If the site did not cite their resources, you can't use it. Web site authors do and will copy and reproduce material and content from other credible sites. Always research text and content to evaluate the originality and authenticity of the content. There are lots of sites that exist simply to copy content and have no author or support. 3. Consider the purpose of the site, who funds the site, and the credentials of the author. You want to use credible sources - unbiased or professional experts, not commentators or blog re-postings (be very, very careful here to locate the original source if you stumble upon one of these types of sites!) 4. Use the types of resources that are generally well accepted for the type of paper that you are writing. Consider your audience's reception of the resources. Use a website evaluation tool. :) I like "SPAT" ... http://www.spat.pitt.edu/ A great book for learning about the Internet which also covers activities and resources for students using the internet for research.
  15. Math Mammoth has In Real Life workbooks. I love these. Take a look at them.
  16. Gees, I should have wrote us a VBA prog with Crystal Reports.
  17. I have found the first few books to be an asset thus far, but I tend to agree with you and the others. Once we had a good foundation, I added spelling and word families. I found the most beneficial concept was teaching word families. For those of you that are not familiar with word families, the spelling "ank" has a sound and specific spelling. All words end in "ank". The child writes, reads, and creates a folder for the specific word family. In this manner, I have the three R's and mastery. Explode the Code is quickly becoming busy work. It is an asset to teaching phonics and blends, but we do skip pages. I found that dd was "cheating" as well, which was why I began doing word flashcards. It is not nor should it be the only thing used for phonics. It is a great tool though. I wish there were more to it overall. We switched to Treasures (it is a giant basket full of resources and you have to pick and choose) this year for second grade with grammar, spelling, and comprehension, which I bought in pieces used and from the publisher. I am adding Write Away for writing, and choosing not to follow the writing from the set, but I love the grammar worksheets so early. That wraps up our Language Arts. It is much simpler too. Scott Foresman has great sets that are reasonable in cost for just the phonics and readingl. I found these at RR and CBD. I added readers to science and history. Expensive, but worth it. More words! ETC is just not a singular device for teaching phonics. They need to apply, and ETC does not progress enough with the type of responses required by the child. They keep with the same pattern of x-ing and matching. I was disappointed that it is becoming useless to me. I have Book 3 in the shopping cart, and after reading this, I have no hope of it changing its "directions", and I would find it useless.
  18. My dd said that she would be happy to have them work for her later in life for minimum wage. LOL That earned her a mom look and a good laugh!
  19. I am working on the 21st century mostly now. I do notice a few gaps in content. :) Updated once again. Can you think of anymore?
  20. I added this one because the extreme popularity of it and controversy. I just thought of an old mini-series ... Norma Rae (Sally Fields) - early unions. Oh my ... what about the Dollmaker? (Jane Fonda)
