Being the parent of an older teen or adult child can be just as challenging as many other stages of parenthood. This group is for parents of young people age 17 and up. I hope that this space can be a safe place to vent and process these challenges, while also soliciting feedback from other parents who are in the trenches or who have been there and made it through this struggle . I also hope that we can rejoice with one another when we manage to muddle through these challenges. I'm hoping that there are some other parents out there who can offer commiseration, gentle suggestions, support, and empathy when I'm struggling and I'd love to offer some to someone else who's in the same boat. I picture this group as a circle of people, sitting around a fireplace, sipping tea, coffee or hot cocoa. When our sister weeps, we hold her hand. When one shares a victory, we rejoice together. When someone asks for feedback, we gently mention things that may have worked for our family or something we read that might be of help.

I'm going to start this off as closed but will move it to private if that is needed.

A place to discuss politics from any political viewpoint from any part of the world. Please remember that we don't all come into this with the same perspective. Here are the current rules: -Treat each respectfully. -No ad hominem attacks of other group members. -Do not tell other people how to vote. We are here to discuss politics, not the voting decisions of group members. -Don't bother SWB. -You don't have to read any thread that offends you, but feel free to present your point of view. -Posters whose comments do not engender thoughtful discussion may be removed from the group.

<p>The "Red Flags" title is a bit tongue-in-cheek btw.</p> <p> </p> <p> The purpose of this group is to list texts and literature books and any bias or content that would be helpful to know about when choosing books for our families.</p> <p> </p> <p> Discussion about wether or not something has bias is not allowed. Everything has a bias and it's own pov. Our goal is just to list them.</p>

<p>Let's talk about education of diverse populations, including those traditionally marginalized, or those belonging to groups with lower income and education levels. This group is also open to discuss the nature of success. We are a positive, loving bunch who like to ponder and wonder.</p>

<p>This group is initially for those members who will be teaching high school chemistry in the fall of 2013. Chemistry can be a challenging subject to teach at the high school level, so the goal is to share resources, expertise, emotional support, and lots of virtual chocolate. Please come ask questions and share your solutions. Tales of successful labs and tales of lab woes are also welcome.</p> <p> </p> <p>I thought it might be a good idea to start it up with a handful of threads - really just titles -to keep us organized:</p> <ol style="list-style-type:decimal;"><li> <strong>Introductions/Check-in</strong>: introduce yourself and your student, your curriculum and perhaps your goals (Honors, regular, just surviving high school science). Check back in here if you make a major change, talk about the results and maybe what you would do differently next time. This could be helpful for those who come after.<br /></li> <li> <strong>Planning</strong>: What you are working on over the summer to prepare; how you are organizing your materials and how you are setting up your lab materials.<br /></li> <li> <strong>Resources: </strong>I thought I would link Dicentra's resource thread and we can add as we go.<br /></li> <li> <strong>Topics: </strong>Maybe Dicentra could set this up? ;) We will all be using different curriculum, but will cover roughly the same material, if not always in the same order: introduction, atoms, stoichiometry, states of matter, solutions, nuclear chemistry, etc. The idea would be that if you have a question about Boyle's Law, then you would go to the thread on "Gases" and ask your question or talk about the cool experiment you did or link a great Youtube lecture on the topic. This way we can stay organized, I think. :tongue_smilie:<br /></li> <li>Whatever else you can think of: math for chemistry, field trips, and maybe a section for "<strong>practical application</strong>." One of my favorite ideas for filed trips in chemistry came from mcconnellboys with the suggestion of visiting distilleries, breweries, etc. to see chemistry in action. Kitchen chemistry is a great teaching tool as well.<br /></li> </ol><p></p> <p>Have a great year and enjoy the journey.</p>
