Do most of you actually do all this reading? Am I missing something here since I haven't been? lol Tammy
-
I just bought Y1 U1 and am only on week 3 so I am obviously really new. lol But, from this 9 weeks I have looked at, using almost any book about the same concept will work, at least for LG and UG. I know I couldn't do some of the literature for D and R and the worksheets, but there's only one worksheet a week for UG, and the Bible content is sooo strong. The historical accountability questions could be found in almost any book or even web site, from what I have seen of these first 9 weeks. So, is this true of all of TOG? Could someone use it and subsitute a lot of the books as long as they are about the same concept? Tammy

I really want to do TOG next year but it frightens me
mama27 replied to Mosaicmind's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Have you downloaded the 3 week samples? OR, if you can afford it, have you thought of buying a unit and seeing how you like it? That's what finally convinced me! Tammy -
I have used SL with my kids and despite the fact that most people say it's too much reading, I didn't find it to be too much. I looked at TOG SOOOO many times and even printed the samples several different times. When I looked at the samples I did not like it at all, honestly. BUT...something kept telling me to look at it again. I kept doing that and finally just bought a unit. I am SOO glad i did even though i am only using it with 5 of my 7 kids, ages 10 and under. I really like the hands on activities, the fact that it does NOT schedule every thing to do each day. I LOVE the Biblical content. I plan on using it again when my current children are older which I also LOVE because that means no more switching around. I also like that i don't HAVE to use the books that are listed but we can still learn what is required, if that makes sense. lol Mybe you tried to do too many things? I am not doing the worksheets for the specific books, or a lot of writing, and i am picking and choosing which activities to do. I would say go for it!!!!:001_smile:

I would buy math curric that could be re-used, like BJU or Saxon and just read books from the library for everything else. Require writing at least once a week on any of the books they read that week. Tammy who has 7 kids.

Wanted to share some thoughts about MFW and TOG
mama27 replied to Woodland_Mom's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I know you said TOG costs more than MFW but I wonder if it really does since you can use TOG again, if you have a lot of children. Tammy- 75 replies

TOG- a brief comment on how I've grown to like this curriculum
mama27 replied to battlemaiden's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Out of curiosity, are any of you using it with just some of your (school age) kids? I'm just wondering as I will have two doing ancients, and one finishing up early modern this coming year. I am using it with my youbgest 5 ages 3-10. Course the 3 and 4 yo aren't really doing much. My 14 and 17 yo do other stuff. tammy -
TOG- a brief comment on how I've grown to like this curriculum
mama27 replied to battlemaiden's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I looked at TOG samples, printed them, read the, tossed them, waited a month and repeated. I have done that for the past year or 2. lol i finally bought aa unit figuring I have wasted 45.00 on dumber things and I am really glad i did even though the children using it are LG and UG. I really like the Biblical content. I am not using all the required resources, actually none of them because idon't have them. But I am finding it very easy to subsitute with other books. I really like that there are certain things to be done each week but "I" get to decide what and when. I also like that I can use this again and I won't have to go looking for more curric. I've done that too much!! The only thing i am still debating is wether to keep buying DE or print copy. Tammy -
Did you download the samples on TOG? They have 2 three week samples, one on Egypt, one on Jamestown (I think).

Thanks for the link to your blog and the MOH/TOG line-up!!! tammy

I just bought year 1 unit 1, which was 45.00 for the de version. I have NOT used it yet but I have been reading like crazy. From what i have seen so far you can still have the discussion questions because they are very versatile questions. With the exception of the literature stuff for rhetoric (which I am skipping for now) the questions are things like "How did the Nile river affect how the Egyptians lived?" BTW, this is not a specific question I don't THINK, I am trying to answer this and deal with my 3 and yos and answer the phone!lol There are a lot of accountability questions like descibe the plants surrounding the Nile or learn how the Egyptian women took care of their house, etc. There is quite a bit of info from the World Book encyclopedias and vocab, people to learn about, geography, and the more I look at it, the more science i can see. IMO it would be VERY easy to add science to TOG. I have used Sonlight and LOVE the books but my kids did not like the schedule or the geography worksheets or the questions. But we LOVE SL books and I am going to add those to TOG wherever they fit. I also like the fact that the Biblical focus is VERY strong in TOG. It's actually stronger than i thought, at least in the one unit I have. Tammy

Well, I finally dove in and bought Y1 Unit 1. I think we will like this but I can see there are parts I won't use even for my high schoolers. Like the literature/poem stuff. THAT looks like it would take all day long alone. MAYBE I will do one if i can find the book at the library. Maybe.. lol

I can't find them anywhere. Does anyone know where they are?

Do any of you have your Rhetoric level kids read the Teacher Notes instead of using the books or in addition to the books?
-
Even though we just started using Weaver and I REALLY like it. I have looked at TOG evey week for a couple months. WHY am I doing this when I really like what we are using???
-
Can you tell why. I haven't seen anything negative about it at all so that has me very curious. Tammy

:lurk5: hoping for more responses. Tammy

I assume you added quite a few extra books and things? Tammy
