  1. Are you trying to use all the curric that you have listed in your signature? If so, no wonder it's so hard!! He's boy. God didn't make (most) boys to be still for that long. No curric is going to help with that. He needs to move, especially at 7. I'd cut out the extra stuff and just work on the things he actually does nee. Like math, reading, and writing. And I do not mean writing paragraphs! I mean handwriting. Copywork. A sentence or 2 from a good book. You read to him. 20 minutes of math a day. Copywork. If he hates ETC online then look at other phonics programs. Take a look at Alpha Phonics. It is working with my youngest 2 because the are just reading the words, not reading, and writing, and spelling all at the same time like with ETC. Drop the history and science and WWE for now. Let him choose books at he library. Read to him. Talk about them. Let the kid play outside. Let him play in the dirt.
  2. Sounds like my kids. I've done these things with them for years and tried to make it fun and interesting and all that and they didn't even learn anything from it anyway. For years.
  3. I used to do all those "experiments" with my oldest 3 kids, then we adopted 4 younger kids and they are just more high maintenance kids and really only learn things if THEY are interested in it. I was talking about this to one of my older daughters one day and she told me that she never enjoyed that stuff either she just went along with it because basically she is more compliant. :glare: So I don't do them anymore. Right now I have one high schooler and I have bought her a cd from one of those popular high school biology courses (I can't recall the name and I'm too lazy to get up and look at it. lol) She can do that next year along with the biology book. And if she chooses to do something else ON HER OWN, fine. If not, that's fine too. She will be going to a local CC after she graduates or possibly dual enrollso why should I go through all that when she will do it there? I have recently accepted the fact that I can only do so much and for YEARS I have tried to be Mrs. Perfect Homeschool Mom and failed. Every week for years I have been stressed because I have tried to do things that I just can't do with the kids I have. So our science will now be things of THEIR choosing, for the most part. I will make them watch certain dvds, read certain books, draw things, talk about things. But the focus is going to be letting them (hopefully) enjoy what they are learning about.
  4. Beats me! I'm still trying to figure out why an author would not want her book talked about. Would't discussion bring more people to want to BUY it? Isn't that a benefit of writing a book??
  5. HMPH! If I buy it, I can talk abut it! What was the conversation about? That's really weird. And creeps me out. Does she have something to hide? If so, why write a book??? That's stupid.
  6. I pretty much do that with anything that makes me feel inadequate. I have stopped reading lots of homeschooling magazines, articles, books, and blogs, (and even A LOT of threads on this board!) because of how they made me feel. I'll be grateful if my 4 youngest kids learn AMERICAN ENGLISH never mind Latin!
  7. I have no opinion, I just want to complain that I want to buy it but it's not a Kindle book. And I am trying to keep my real books to a minimum after moving this past summer and having to get rid of a zillion books.
  8. I think the ebook is good because I can print a certain page and take it with me to the library. :thumbup1:
  9. Well, I just bought the ebook because I had been wanting to and forgot about it till I read this thread. It came right away.
  10. That's what I was looking for: samples. I did ask on the Facebook group but haven't heard anything yet.
  11. http://store.bravewriter.com/collections/language-arts-programs/products/quiver-of-arrows A Quiver of Arrows. Has anyone bought this?
  12. As shocking as this may sound I think the OP was really asking for opinions from people who have actually used or thought about using this book. To the OP I don't know if you've been on these boards long ( I didn't look to see if how many posts you've written) but I don't think you will get a decent answer here. All you'll get is what you've already gotten, people trying to attack you for YOUR faith and doing their best to convince you how wrong and terrible you are. Try another board. I haven't used the book but I have heard of it, sorry I can't be of more help.
  13. Also, something you could do id have the kids check their own work, if there are not trust issues. I've done this for years.
  14. could be a gluten intolerance. one of my daughters was sick for years and turned that gluten is the culprit.
  15. I have a 15 yo who reads very slowly so I'll be watching this thread.
  16. I agree with you! IMO, it's disgusting to wear the same clothes more than once especially with kids who are always spilling stuff, don't always wipe properly, etc. Also, some f you must have of you must have some really super cooperative kids because it would take me much longer than 10 to 20 minutes per kid to teach a math concept! Another thing I would do is have a certain amount of time for math. My 15 yo only does algebra for an hour, regardless of how many problems she gets done. I wouldn't do more than 30 minutes for a 5th grader. But we are relaxed homeschoolers here. Also, you hating math doesn't mean your kids automatically will! I hate math and love to read. Some of my kids hate to read, some hate math, some like math, etc. It would be more helpful, IMO, if mom's would quit blaming the mom for everything and just give some helpful (not snarky) advice.
  17. I agree with this. Just let go of formal math for your 2nd grader. I have tried Math Mammoth and do not like the way it teaches at all. IMO, it's more advanced and not really for the average kid doing math. If a kidliked the challenge, ok, but I have average kids who just want to get it done. What id wrong with using Math U See? I didn't see why you wanted to stop using it.
  18. Wow! Really?? She chooses not to wear clothes more than once you say she should put her kids in ps because she is struggling with teaching her kids math? How helpful. NOT!
  19. Go for it! History is done. Nothing new in history. You could even drop it till High school and they would still have time to learn it all.
  20. This type of schooling is possible but I think it really depends on the personalities of the kids and parents. My 3 oldest thrived with this type of education. My 4 younger kids need way more structure.
  21. Ok, so from what I've read of your posts, your daughter is already academically ahead of where you are, despite the past 3 years of not educating her the way you feel is best and yet you want to send her to the same place that you got YOUR education? Obviously not the same exact school, but the unless you can find a school that educates the way you feel is best, it's probably not going to be any better, and may even be worse, especially since you wrote you don'tlive in such a bad school area now. Not that bad of a school district will not be anywhere close to your ideal, IMO. Sometimes I think our ideals and what other people do is not what can actually happen , in real life. Maybe you should just cut yourself some slack and realize you've actually done a pretty good job!!!
