  1. I haven't read all of the responses so I don't know if these are repeats! 1. Lots of breaks! Work hard for 30 minutes, 15 minute break. 2. Lots of physical activity! The more they can move, the better! 3. Children don't have to sit to do school work- my daughter stands, wiggles, jumps, and is generally non-stop moving while she is working. It seems to help her focus. We practice math facts or memory work while she jumps on a mini-trampoline. 4. Give him some silly putty or play doh to play with with in one hand while he works. That helps some kids focus better. You could also try gum. 5. Break up harder seat work with games. 6. Did I mention lots of breaks??? Hope some of those ideas help!
  2. I agree with the others in having patience. It takes kids awhile for everything to click- it is a lot to remember and to apply. Just move at your child's pace- they will get there!
  3. We went to the practicum last year and will be going again this year. I found it very useful as I was new to CC and fairly new to the classical style. It was a long three days for kids. My oldest did well- I just planned on very low-key evenings those days and nothing else the rest of the week for them to re-coop. My youngest was still taking naps so after lunch I would have her come sit with me. She snuggled on my lap and would rest- some times she napped. She still takes naps this year so I'll probably have her join me after lunch again- I'll bring some quiet books if she doesn't want to sleep. I guess it would depend on the personality of your children and how well your practicum is ran- two big variables.
  4. Thanks! I will have a 1st grader and a 4 yr old. How do you think it is for the younger levels- I'm more concerned about the 1st grader!
  5. Can't wait to hear other's answers! We were looking at this also! It seems like it has some meat to it but still written for the younger ages!
  6. We are wanting to study astronomy next year. We are looking at using Apologia. Any thing else for me to look at and consider?
  7. Is Writing with Ease the same as the Complete Writer?
  8. We've been using Explode the Code and doing copy work, dictation and journal writing on our own. She is an excellent writer for her age and I haven't done a formal spelling program. She seems to pick up on spelling on her own with a few minor corrections that seem to sink in. If I see a problem word that keeps popping up, I will work it into our copy work or dictation. I'll have to look at Writing with Ease. Should I move on to something else once she finishes up the Explode the Code? We've been using Beyond the Code a few days a week and she is reading at a late 1st grade level.
  9. We are looking at First Language Lessons for our language arts program for next year. Is there anything else you guys can recommend for us to check out?
  10. We did CC this last year and I'm signing us up again for this year. It is a lot to learn for the little ones and it is not appropriate for every little one. My eldest (5) enjoys it and I don't push to memorize everything each week. I review what I feel is important or what she seems interested in- if she doesn't get it all, no big deal- she is 5. We all look forward to going so it fits our family. Now my youngest will be turning 4 about a month after CC starts. I could sign her up for class or keep her in the nursery. Hubby and I decided to keep her in the nursery for now and re-evaluate in Jan. She is not ready for it and it would stress her out- not worth it! Consider your expectations- do you expect your children to memorize it all? What do you want you and family to get out of CC? Can the same goals be met another way? If you have serious doubts, don't do it. It's not worth the battles at that young age!
  11. My eldest LOVES LOVES games! What are some of your favorite board games, educational or logic games?
  12. Which do you like better and why? I will have a 6 yr old and a 4 yr old. What works better for the younger but I can use as they get older? How much teacher prep is there? How much running around looking for books? We are wanting to do a time-line with history. Does one lend itself better to a time-line? Thanks!
  13. Thanks for all of the replies! I'm glad to hear that Horizons seems to be such a good program and now I have a few more other options to look at! She enjoys review- she likes being able to get it all right. She also enjoys new harder problems- just if I give her to many, it overwhelms here. I've learned to give her a few at a time over several days. That seems to be how Horizons is set up.
  14. We are finishing up our first year at CC and have joined for next year. My eldest had just turned 5 when we started. There is a LOT of info to cover and I was not worried about her memorizing all of it- she is only 5 and she will get the info again in the future. It is laying down the ground work and she is at least getting familiar with it. It is hard for the younger ones to pay attention for that length of time and they do get a wiggly towards the end. Both of my girls have learned a lot more then I expected from them at the beginning of the year since we listen to the memory work in the car. My 3 yr old can skip count her 2's and tell you the classification of living things! I think it was worth it for several reasons. We were all exposed to the info- even if we don't have it all memorized. My girls are making are making friends with other like-minded people. I was more focused and on task since I had an accountability group. I enjoy the support and friendship from our group. I like the end goal of CC and where they will be taking the kids so we are going to keep doing it. Hope that helps!
  15. We have more of a routine then a schedule. We get up, eat breakfast and do our chores. The girls have their chores and I have mine. I break down the housework and have different tasks for each day of the week. I set a timer and we have to be done with chores by the time the timer goes off. If the girls succeed, they get computer time or T.V. time (educational stuff) for 30 minutes. While they are doing that, I finish up my chores and have a little Bible study. After that, we start with our lessons. We are normally done by 11 am or so (They are only 5 and 3). They get time to play and I have time to finish up whatever I need to. We have lunch and little one goes down for a nap. Older one gets her workbooks out (she loves to do them) and I have some quiet time. If older one needs help, she comes to me. When she finishes her work, she is allowed to play quietly. After nap, we usually have time for a few games, errands or activities. Then it is dinner, bath, bed. Each day of the week is slightly different due to activities and college classes for hubby and I but that is a rough routine of how our day goes.
  16. Hi! I'm new to this board. We are finishing up our first year of homeschooling. My daughter has blown me away with how well she is doing in math. She whipped through Saxon K and is now speeding through Saxon 1. I really don't need to teach her lessons- just hand her the worksheet and she figures it out. She is needing more of a challenge. I'm going to switch curriculum and was thinking about Horizon. I've heard it is more challenging. What are your experiences with it? Is there something else you would recommend?
