  1. Looks like ds is going to get an A or at worst a B in his precalculus class. He was really worried about it when he started because the "pre-precalculus" test the professor gave them was a little confusing (he hadn't done math in years except statistics) but once I showed him how to do some of it, he felt better but was still worried. The professor seems good and really wants to be helpful but giving them a test of stuff they should already know that is harder than some of the stuff they are doing in class seems weird. So many of his professors seem to go into the first day trying to scare them about how hard things are going to be. Ds has never been in school before cc, and is on the spectrum and he's dropped a few classes based on the professors first day presentation that he may have been fine with if he stuck it out. He mainly stuck out precalculus because I was able to help him with the test and could help him throughout the semester if he needed it (he hasn't needed my help at all since). It seems a weird choice to start classes at a community college by scaring them.
  2. Since it's been raining and warm(ish) and they are doing a ton of construction work in the space next to mine after years of it sitting empty, we are getting a bunch of ants at work. We usually get them for a few weeks in the Spring, especially when it's raining, but this is excessive. I had just set up shelving lining the walls in our main classroom a few months ago and when I'm off I'm going to pull them all out, make sure nothing has gotten behind them that is attracting the ants, put down diatomaceous earth or borax or something that will repel the ants, before putting them back in place.
  3. Today I'm heading into work to gather the stuff for tomorrow's science workshop, feeding the snake we're babysitting, maybe doing a small amount of other cleaning/organizing (but I'm doing a big clean/organize job when I'm off week after next), and then going to the Y to workout. It's a sunny day today for a change so I may also take a walk at some point. ETA: A boring Friday booya.
  4. I've been putting milk in my tea for the past week because it's supposed to be better for teeth and I'm definitely getting some staining/weakness. But I've also been super achy this week and I'm wondering if it could be due to the milk. I don't have milk often, mainly just occasionally in cereal or what's used in cooking, and I do get achy/feel a little yucky when I eat cereal but I've always blamed it on the cereal. Maybe it's the milk? There been a few other choices this week that could also be contributing. How many days does it take for inflammatory foods to leave your system?
  5. I don't like key lime or lemon meringue pie. Both are too tart for my taste. I like fruit pies (apple, pumpkin, etc) and chocolate pies.
  6. I live in the 89% band from the eclipse so we aren't planning to go anywhere. We have a 95% chance of it being cloudy that day (although do they really know this far ahead??). I'll see what the weather looks like for that day and we may take a trip about 30 miles Northeast to High Point NJ and watch from there. Or not. I do have glasses and binoculars to watch with if the weather cooperates.
  7. If you are signed in properly, it sounds like your personal subscription to Office may have expired. Usually I get that message when I'm not signed in for some reason and once I sign in to an active account, everything is normal.
  8. Finances definitely would be better for us if the kids went to school. We don't spend much on curriculum anymore, don't pay for many classes or do any coops, transportation and food are a wash. But last time I worked full time (while we were homeschooling, we hired a private teacher), I made $60,000 a year as an executive assistant. And we have very good public schools so we wouldn't be paying for private school or anything like that.
  9. I don't know if I'd be super memorable. I think I'm the only regular poster in New Jersey so that would help. Also running a science center, and my signature would probably be a clue. I'm pretty sure I'd be able to pick out Regentrude, Dmmetler, and Ktgrok even if their names changed. A couple others I may suspect but would probably not be certain.
  10. Morning, Happy Thursday. Today is just a regular old Thursday. I"m not doing my first class since I have too many students absent and the one student that is here went into class with his siblings instead. No meetings tonight, no classes tomorrow, but a super busy weekend. Dh and I are presenting a workshop at a science workshop day for 4H and then, of course, Sunday is Easter. Dh is cooking dinner but we're eating at dd's apartment since she has more space and it's about halfway between our house and my mother's house so a little more convenient. dd is having lunch/brunch with her dad so it's hard for her to make dinner at my mom's out in the boonies.
  11. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Grimm Firefly Supernatural Star Trek (TOS) Big Bang Theory Firefly Psych Burn Notice The Good Place - probably my favorite-ist favorite Veronica Mars (Hate the way they ended it, though) When I was a kid/teen, I liked A Team, Charlie's Angels, Hardy Boys.
  12. Happy Monday. I was feeling crappy all day today. Didn't sleep well, then didn't have many options for breakfast (dh worked all weekend so didn't grocery shop) so had chocolate donuts, which didn't hit my stomach well. Came home from work and took a nap, then had a healthy dinner and I feel much better now. Hoping for a better Tuesday.
  13. She won her first day with a final question where the answer was "The Princess Bride". I think she won once more and then lost her third "day".
  14. I've had it happen without a trigger but only the lightheadedness, ringing in ears, narrow vision part of it. I don't think I've ever come close to passing out. I've had it happen suddenly while driving and I'm able to continue driving until I can stop. It happens sometimes when I'm teaching and I can keep teaching through it. I've had it happen in certain stores and I think in that case it may be overheated or stress reaction. I've always blamed it on allergies/stuffed head/inner ear fluid and taking benedryl helps. I'm very sensitive to barometric pressure changes (and benedryl helps with that full-headed feeling too).
  15. We have a local ice cream place that makes their own and my favorite is a double dark chocolate fudge crunch. Chocolate ice cream with threads of fudge and cake crunchies. Yummy. Ugh, now I want ice cream but I'm trying to lose weight. I'm getting all kinds of stuff on Facebook about the Barkley. I think it's cool that the Wikipedia was evidently updated immediately after the race finished.
  16. I've been here since around 2008/2009 when we realized school was going to be a bad idea for ds. I'm still homeschooling younger dd but don't go to the curriculum boards much since we're pretty much set in a routine now and not looking for ideas very often. Dh will ask me what "my boards" say about things if he's curious about news or current events type stuff, since he knows that there's a lot of great information about all kinds of things here.
  17. I love moose tracks. I like my ice cream with chunky stuff in it.
  18. I agree that the Hakim books aren't really a science curriculum. I run a science center and did a history of science class a few years ago. I used the Hakim books as a base but really it just served as a very basic outline. They have very few actual science experiments or even demonstrations, and were very physics heavy IMO. I'm teaching this class again next year but leaving behind the Hakim books. I'm shooting for a science class that relates to a bit of history, not a history class with some references to science.
  19. Morning, Happy Thursday. Today is a busy busy day. Classes, 4H club and 4H Fair meeting. Basically running around from 9am until 9pm. But tomorrow I don't have anything until 4pm and nothing Saturday and Sunday. Next weekend will be busy with a Science Day for 4H where dh and I are presenting and then Easter on Sunday but I won't have any Thursday evening meetings and no classes on Friday. I wonder what it's going to be like the week I have Thursday meetings AND Friday classes AND weekend activities? I'm an introvert. I need downtime.
  20. My purse has a traveler's notebook with card pockets that holds most of my cards - credit/debit, insurance, gift cards, some cash, a few other items. I always have some pens, liners/pads, tissues, an inhaler, benedryl, advil, tums, a pair of scissors. That's the basics if I've just cleaned it out. It generally accumulates other stuff. But, I also hardly ever carry my purse. I have a phone case that holds my business credit card, a personal credit card, my drivers license and some cash. I usually only have that when running into stores, etc. I only carry my full purse if I'm going out to dinner or to a flea market type situation. Currently my purse is a Teva sling bag.
  21. Morning, Happy Saturday. I cleaned my living room yesterday (I'm really really bad at housework so that is an occasion). Now I have space to do yoga in the mornings. I really need to get back to that because my muscles are achy again. Today I'm going into work to do some arranging. I had to move some stuff out of the way because the town put in a new water meter and it was in my closet. Now I have to move things back but we're also rearranging a classroom since we moved the junior room and put in shelves. Looks like I did hire an admin. She won't be starting until August but I had mentioned it to some people and one of them was interested so brought it up to me. We met so we could see if she was even interested once she knew what it entailed and she was. I'm excited, I think she'll be really good at it.
  22. We have "party" buses around here that the company will drive to your house for a kids party. I've seen them with mats and padded walls for tumbling/gymnastics parties, with gaming computers and video game systems, arts and craft activities/tables, and lights and music for dance parties.
  23. Okay I'm seeing that some "Boston Creme Pie" is actually most definitely cake. But I've usually had Boston Creme Pie that is actually pie in a crust.
  24. Why isn't Boston Creme Pie a pie? It has a crust. I like ice cream pie - softened ice cream mixed with cool whip and pudding mix in a chocolate cookie crust then placed in the freezer to harden but in the fridge an hour before serving. Maybe some Magic shell on top. Yummy.
  25. Yeah, but I'll actually only be working 10am to 3:30pm Monday through Thursday and only until 12:30pm on Fridays except certain weeks. Not even full time (if I don't have all the paperwork to do as well). 99% of my classes will be fully planned if I can resist tweaking stuff.
