  1. I just went to list my Analytical Grammar set for sale on the sale pages and it said I need to make at least one post before I can advertise it. I used to post here a lot, but it's been awhile. Anyway, if you are needing Analytical Grammar....go check out the sale pages.
  2. I am sure you know this, but most colleges only accept 30 credit hours of CLEPs, so make sure and not take too many ;o).
  3. Running the Race - My son is history minded, so Government was very easy for him. After Government he went on and took about 6 other History tests (some were DANTE'S not CLEP). Some were easier than others, but he somewhat enjoyed them all because he loves history. Psychology was one of the easiest CLEPs. Anyalyzing Literature was also very easy, but that is one he was a natural at from reading so many books; not one which he studied a lot to take. He takes each Instantcert problem set one by one. He doesn't move onto the next category until he feels like he has mastered the first one. I believe before he moves on to the next set, he goes back and combines all the previous sets just to make sure he hasn't forgotten any. He then at the end combines all the sets. One thing he suggests is to thoroughly read all the questions and the answers (which is basically the first question rephrased with maybe more details). He learns a lot from both the question and the answer. After he feels like he knows all the Instancerts, then he takes an REA practice test. Nearly every CLEP he has taken has had 2 or 3 practice tests in the REA book. These have been more help to him than the Official Study Guide because they are full length tests, not just a few questions. If you are not familiar with the REA books, Just search for REA CLEP books on Amazon. Used books are fine, just so long as they have not been written in . We sell the books once we are done, and find this is a small price to pay for study material. We have not found any other study program which works as well as the combinatin of Instantcert and REA books. A tip he gives is if you take the Government CLEP, then take the US History CLEPS next as their is a lot of overlap in material. Same with some sciences. For instance, he took the General Science CLEP (worth 6 credits). In order to pass that test, he had to thoroughly study Biology (and all he used was a highschool ABEKA book ;o). After he took the General Science, he went the next week and took the Biology test (also worth 6 credits). So in a weeks time, he earned 12 hours of credit. He did spend about a month preparing for the first test, but well worth the 12 credits!
  4. I decided to do the research and plan out my sons 4 year Bachelor degree in Social Science plan throught Thomas Edison State College. He is only 17 and has 81 credits now and is on target to graduate later this year. It really was not that hard to do. I had a ton of questions which I got answered through a forum where many other people are doing this and have done it already. www.instantcert.com . I am pretty confident we have it all planned out correctly becuase all his tests are equivalent to the requirements which TESC has laid out for this degree. There are only 3 degrees, to my understanding, which can be completely tested out of and those are Psychology, Liberal Arts, and Social Sciences. Even with Social Sciences, TESC requires him to take a capstone course with them...the very last course. While I understand a degree in Social Sciences may not be the most in demand degree for employers, it actually lines up perfecly with my son's interests (history, political science, economics). What can it hurt to have a 4 year degree when he turns 18 this summer? Also, if he decides he wants to get a degree in something else later on, he can get his masters. To us, we are just thrilled he will have his bachelors degree with zero college debt. I am more than happy to talk to anyone about this further if you need a little help making your own plan.
  5. Paula, So what are you going to use in highschool. And how can i manage to use whole books in highschool without reading the whole book myself. I don't have time! When I assign a highschool level literature book, they say, "I don't understand any of it." They can understand their textbooks, but can't get into these novels. So I need to go through them chapter by chapter with them, I think. Maybe I will have to break down and read them. Sigh....
  6. One thing I do not like about A Beka is being given one chapter of a book. I have read some of these and I don't find a chapter in the middle of a book enjoyable at all. Also, will we really learn much about the author if we just read a chapter of one book? I'm not thinking we will remember who wrote what with this approach. I think BJU is basically the same, though. Correct? Literature is not my subject! ;o(
  7. I want to start highschool literature with my girls who have had no formal literature class. I own every grade of ABeka literature, student texts only, but have not assigned them just because they do not look appealing to me (I have not had literature before, either). So my friend was highly recommending BJU literature. Should I go buy the BJU kit (9th grade) or just buy the TM for my ABeka and use those? If they are going to be basically the same, then I might as well go with the books I already own, but if the BJU is going to be much easier for us to get through, then I will invest in all new books. The BJU has a companion CD with the TM. I'm not sure how helpful it is, but it's there. Thank you in advance! Monica
  8. Thank you, South Carolina Mom! I'm excited for him!
  9. IF anyone needs a great way to study for a CLEP test, I'd like to recommend Instantcert. www.instantcert.com My son started studying for CLEPs about 18 months ago when he was just 16. HE is now 17-1/2 and has 81 college credits and should graduate from Thomas Edison State College with a Bachelor's in Social Science degree later this year. He used Instantcert.com to study for almost every test and it has been absolutely wonderful. It costs us $20 a month, but that is his main source for studying, so well worth it. I have a discount code which will save you $5 off your first month. We only need one more person to sign up and then we will get a referral check, so we would really appreciate you using it. The code is 27347. To show our appreciation, feel free to message me if you have any questions about preparing for the tests. We are glad to share with you what we have learned about testing out of college this way. Thank you! Monica
  10. Jann, you got me hooked on Lial's (windmill editions) 3 or 4 years ago now. I haven't been on WTM in awhile, but popped in hoping to ask a question of you and here you are still. Would we have to finish the Intermediate Algebra book to complete an average Algebra 2 course? I would like to quit with about 75% of the book complete. Would that be terrible? Thanks! Monica
  11. I bought Notgrass America the Beautiful package last week for $89 plus tax/shipping....total $103. Now I am feeling bad about spending so much for a history book. I've never used Notgrass. Have any of you tried the other Notgrass books before? In the past we've done ABeka and TOG. I'm tired of the ABeka textbooks and TOG was too much for me to handle. Will this remind me of ABeka since it is a text? I'm going to teach 3 middle school girls as a group with the Notgrass. The Notgrass has not shipped, so I can still cancel my order. Any thoughts? Thanks, Monica
  12. It will be my first ever Notgrass and I will be using it with 3 girls at the same time. I surely hope we like it! ;o) Monica
  13. This site, http://www.honorpoint.com , is what helped us get the multiplication down quickly. We used the "drills" page. It times the kids, and I had them continuously trying to beat their scores. FYI, my girls were still using this at 10 and 11 because it was taking too long to get through long division problems. It really was quite helpful. Monica
  14. I was given a first edition copy of Exploring Creation with General Science (7th grade). Should I use it or upgrade to the new edition? I'd rather not spend the money, but if it will make a big difference..I will. This will be our first time to use a Wile book. Thanks. Monica
  15. I like R&S for Math and English and am considering it for 8th grade history. We already have 8th grade ABeka history, but I'm not my girls can handle it. I think it may be too much reading and in depth. From the sample, I'm thinking the R&S may be a bit simpler?? My younger daughter just started using the 4th grade history and likes it, but I'm wondering about the higher grades. I can't find many of them used, so that could be a clue that there is a problem. Has anyone tried it and could give me a review? Thanks. Monica
  16. I own all the Lial books so that will probably be what we use unless I get a better recommendation. My son is older and using the Intermediate Algebra right now.
  17. After using both ABeka and Saxon math and not enjoying either one bit, this year the twins used Rod & Staff Grade 7 Math and loved it. They are almost done with the books and insist we stick with it. They were very disappointed to find out they can only use R&S for one more year. What math program would be most similar to R&S for 9th grade? They definitely benefited from the mastery style of teaching. The Saxon filled their minds with too many things at once without enough practice on each concept and eventually completely overwhelmed them. Thanks! Monica
  18. This is all good to know and consider. Looks like I need to go talk with an admissions counselor to help me figure out the best route for him to take. Monica
  19. My son is 14 and finished most of his highschool work. We'd like him to start testing out of as many college courses as he can at this time. We are in Texas. Is there any financial assistance for taking these tests? I don't know that I understand what the difference is between the AP and the CLEP. Could some one explain it to me and tell me if there is a reason to choose one over the other. Does one help him obtain grants or scholarships when he is ready to go to college, or do both of these tests actually hinder his ability to get a scholarship? I really don't know where to start. WOuld it be advisable to just go to the local college and talk to a counselor to learn about our options? Thanks. Monica
  20. I was concerned I was missing something, but it sounds like the good stuff is coming up soon. Thanks. I feel better! Monica
  21. Actually, it is scheduled into Core 4....starts in week 3. I already have the book.
  22. So it just takes awhile to reach that kind of history.....cause it's not listed in the first couple weeks of assignments. Will they get a good knowledge of history by using this program? I'm hoping so!
  23. Sorry, I said Year 5, but I should have said Core 4.
