  1. PLease any suggestions for health &Safety. I would love to be able to just print out some worksheets for her on these topics.

    what are you using?

I bought IF Health & Safety curriculum but now that Im looking through it, its more for a classroom environment with games etc for several kids. so its just not going to work.

    Thanks :D

  2. After I have checked their work, I record their grades (first year I am giving them daily grades on work) and then file their work in a yearly binder with dividers.

Just curious. How do you do your grading?? I want to do grades for my DD ( As she loves seeing how well shes doing & is use to them from PS) but I wasnt really sure how to tackle it. ;)

  3. I found a really long thread on this , I think it was( catholicmom? ) that suggested this system.

Im really thinking it would be great for us. Now I cant find the thread & Im trying to remember exactly how she did this.

Has anyone used this system ?

Being new I didnt really make out any lesson plans because everyone said it would just fall into place and you'd probably have to rewrite them anyway..

But after going day by day.. I feel like we could easily fall behind in the books.

I feel this 36 week thing would be great way to get us organized ( and we do need that! ) and moving smoother.

DD also loved the idea of having a folder of our work for the week. :D

any info is appreciated! thanks !! :D

  4. Being brand new to HS'ing I really appreciate everyone's input! Its very helpful to see how you all work through this program.

We have been working through the lessons and I have started a new token/behavior type thing for both school work and home chores.

    so far its working!!! :D

So Im planning to enforce the fact that she needs to read the book studies and then she can choose other books to read of her choice.

I just decided to get more into the lessons and get things moving more smoothly before throwing it at her again. (being this is all new for us)

So far today is going really well. Thanks again for your input!:D

  5. Thank you both! I did put the LOF on hold for a bit and we are jjust practicing basics.

I found a site kidsnumbers.com and she did some division on there and Seemed to enjoy it. Ill be sure to try the Math drills site

Thanks I think maybe I jumped into too much to start.. so we are easing into things now and I feel its going a little smoother. :D

  6. Hi, Lindsay,

What part of the TM is confusing? I'm using LLATL as a more independent student directed approach;). I love teaching my dc but with six kiddos, it gets hard to be there for everything. I'm basically using the tm for some guidance and too check her answers. Oh, and of course I help with dictation.

Hopefully the other Linda, will chime in :001_smile:

I guess I wasnt sure how to approach the "teaching" aspect, So we are doing more of an independent approach also, Im there for guidance but Im not "teaching" it so to speak. very new at this hs'ing thing.. so I guess its just a matter of what works, right?

Im trying to think of ways to work around her being soo stubborn! & Get her to read the darn book! ahh :glare::D

  7. JUst wondering how its going for you? I'm finding it slightly confusing tryn to use the teachers book and how its layed out.

Have you started a book study>? My DD is refusing to read the first "farmerboy"

She loves to read, but says she cant read that kind of writing.. Which I think is just and excuse.

She has new glasses so she can see. I tried reading it aloud but she hates doing read alouds.

Last year she was in 4th n reading on 6th level. So shes a great reader.. But just hates reading chapter books.

She did say she wants to read meet addy.. which is later in the book. should I just let her skip and read that one?

    Ideas???

  8. Okay so we are using LOF fractions and Spectrum MAth workbook (5th Grade)

I chose these because 1- she loves the style of LOF ( loves reading the wmpy kid books) \. the spectrum i chose for extra practice and to keep on guide with her grade level.

I realize this is only the second week,. the first week didnt go so good. (posted in another thread & thanks for the help there)

My question is for a kid that knows the Math.. and still draggs to do it what could help? She s very good at her multiplication facts so thats not a problem.

She's doing pretty well with the LOF except chapt 3 we hit one problem that was a 2 digit division and that completely threw her off.. she just starting whining..that she cant do that .. its too hard!

SO Ive been just having her do about 20-30 practice questions n the Spectrum book.. just to review.

Tommorrow we will go back to LOF. But I know the division is approaching us..

What am going to do with the "harder" work that she hates to even try??

I told her there are things that she "needs" to do and it can take 10 min (because I know she knows it) or she can cry and whine an it cn take 2 hours.

I have found some website math games.. but anyone know of any that actually show step by step division?? Thought maybe that would help.. she doesnt get my "explanation" plus Im apparently not as fun as a computer game! ;)

  9. While I generally agree, if I was starting schooling in the middle of things, like age 9, I'd sell the point a little. Not ice cream, but biology at the zoo. I'll use that as an example. Go to the zoo. No packing in the junk food. Take some pictures of animals she'd like to read about, and familiarize yourself with what is there and what you can cover in future. Make some notes. Go to the library and get some books. Have lunch, do an intro to your grammar curriculum, then do some bio reading, do a simple art project on the animal, and review the classifications of animals.

Next day, try the same with history and start in with some math drill. Mix "discovery" with seat work. If there is one curriculum that is wrong, change it, but if ALL are "boring" or "horrible", tighten the screws.

I'm not very experienced at either mothering or hs, but I just wanted to point out that there was a middle ground between ice cream and afgans and dog piles in the yard.:001_smile:

And I would work on that placid sorry-but-that-is-the-way-it-is face and voice. And no TV for babysitting. HTH

    :grouphug::grouphug:

Thanks! I love the zoo idea.. being we started the classification 1st chapt of science!~

Im also planning a trip to the fenimore art museum right near us.. they have a special American Indian Art show going on now , with a HUGE totem pole that was brought across the country. (Native Americans- our first chapt of history)

Maybe she will realize the connection..

    ahhh the transition phase..:tongue_smilie:

Hoping this week will be better. :D

  10. Week one... I felt like I was going to have a panic attack. Overwhelmed... too much to do, etc. This is a busy fall for us anyways, but suddenly adding school into the mix really threw me for a loop. Week 2 was better. This week has been great. I'm hoping it just took a while to get into the routine... and used to the idea. It slightly freaked me out to not actually send her to school. I'm getting used to the idea, though. :001_smile:

Glad Im not the only one..busy busy & then throwing this all new HS thing into the mix! haha I have a little anxiety when the school bus goes by in the morning. But heres to better week starting monday! :D

  11. :grouphug:

    :grouphug:

Every time I have a moment/day/week like that, dh reminds me to look at the calendar. It almost ALWAYS is the week before my period. Then he tells me to chill out, and not to enroll them in school until I'm on the other side of that month's cycle. :D

In fact, he had to tell me that about...let's see...two days ago! :tongue_smilie: So today, we went out for doughnuts for breakfast, where we met another homeschooling family doing the same thing! I talked with the mom for quite a while, and it really helped me see that yes, this is the right thing.

No idea if that's helpful. I just empathize with you.

That made me laugh , i idont have a dh to tell me but yes right on there! I realized thats probably most of it along with the other stress at the moment.. it all built up and so it just exploded into a meltdown. (which i realized I cant even remember the last time I cried like that!) So apparently I needed it~! ;)

I feel much better this afternoon.. shes with my mother and Im at work (doing my dreadful Biology).. Thank god I have my own shop so i can do my HW there! I left her with an art project.

I had a nice chat with one of my regular customers who hs'ed her daughter for a few years. very helpful! I will not give up.. this is what I chose to do for a reason at this time in our life and we will move forward. :001_smile:

    Thank you!!

  12.

...and i just wanted to add: please don't feel bad about your daughter seeing you cry. grown ups have emotions too and kids can understand that.

Thank you! :grouphug: I did explain to her that sometimes we grownups have a whole lot of things that build up and we do cry! She understood. I think she felt badly about me crying.. she thought about it .. then said.. mom should i finish my math now? lol

Gotta love em! I said no we are done for today. She openly said.. I guess I need to give it more of a chance!

    yah! ;)

    THanks everyone for your support!!

  13.

There have been times when I didn't like homeschooling and times when dd didn't. However, neither of those changed the fact that our local ps is terrible and the nearest private option is about an hour and 20 minutes away, not to mention out of our price range. Homeschooling is the best choice for us for a number of reasons and we will continue to do it until those reasons change.

Thats what I keep reminding myself.. her PS is terrible and the reasons why we did this! Just one little meltdown for me.. :tongue_smilie:.. and it was probably bc of a whole lot of other built up stuff and this just let it loose!

thank you for your support, I so appreciate it!! We will get through this & on a positive note! thanks:grouphug:

  14. Im just sitting here in a chair crying.. she went down stairs and is just watching tv.

I dont even think its the math.. it was just review multiplying worksheet and she knows the answers just didnt want to do it. shes refused to do any reading and she loves to read & draggn in everything else. she knows the stuff.. just isnt into doing it.

She wanted to hs all last year.. Im just so upset I cant think straight.. and being single parent.. its times like these that really stink! :001_unsure:

  15. okay.. so today was only day 4.. and I thought it was going to be better but it didnt turn out that way.

We did a few short lessons, trying to keep her attention.. got to math and it was absolutely horrible.. she whined complained, refused to do the work..

long story short. we stopped and I just started to cry!

She had the saddest face, and while asking her to talk to me.. she finally said, I hate homeschooling. Its not at all what I thought and I just dont like it. Iwant to be in school with my friends, i dont like being home all day.

so im stressed as it is.. trying to make this work,do my last college semester work being slow.. etc..

SO im just having a breakdown. I cant send her back to that PS. not to mention what will all the people and family say.. if this HS'ing doesnt workout???

    Im a mess!
