  1. Shes an only child first of all and Im a single parent , it has always been this way. she attended PS until last year 4th grade. Im trying to make it as fun as possible with the time I have. My classes are online so Im flexible with my time. Ive tried the field trip and out to lunch stuff which she loved. Its just that Im in NY and I have to report what we do. Ive already given a list of the texts we are using. SO at the 1st quarter we will be expected to send a report of how far we have made it through.. So i cant grasp the reality of just tossing the books all together.. :001_huh: I just feel like if its not on paper, shes not learning everything shee needs. I know you learn alot from just lving but for school purposes.. (if she had to go back to ps at some point) I feel like she would be way behind if toss the books and just live with her. ( and really im not asking her to do a TON of work.. we cover the basics and do few practice problems) she hates to read outloud with me, she's very stubborn beyond belief! I have tried the rewards and token system which worked okay at first.. but now its just " i hate always being home" & this isnt fun at all. Ive tried to explain if we get the work done then you have the rest of the day free.. but then its like " to do what? be home all day" we dont live where its easy to just go places.. its a distance.. 30 min to any major shopping/movie/book store etc. I dont know of any homeschooling groups that we would fit in. Im trying to find someoneto give guitar and or piano lessons, but again that will be a hike to(which i dont mind) its just finding someone. Sometimes I wish I could just start over in a new place.! i really hate where we live anyway.
  2. :banghead: Im really thinking I made wrong decision to HS. we had a few good days out of 3 weeks. Starting week 4 and its horrible. She just refuses to do anything. Hates being home all the time. Nothings fun... I just dont even know what to do.. :001_unsure:
  3. Thanks. :D I was trying to figure out how I could do the oil spill.. I think I Will do the Gulf.. Showing the negative results of the spill and the beauty of the ocean .. Thanks for helping me turn my lightbulb on !!
  4. Im having trouble coming up with ideas for my art project..(college Art class) The project is 2 collages using cutout pictures etc from magazines. Using ONE single topic and showing postives in one collage and negatives in the other. THe example he gave us was Michael Jackson.. showing his music talent in one collage and the negative personal side that was in the media on the other collage. It does not have to be a person. I just need "something" a icon so to speak that I can show Postives and negatives using pictures only. Im having artist block :001_unsure: Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!! :D:D
  5. It actually was an all around amazing day for us! I couldnt believe it! She just was willing to do everything without a single complaint. Now we shall see how today goes! ;) But its Friday and most of the weeks work is done! :D
  6.:party: WE MADE IT THROUGH MATH!!! I should mention without a single.. sigh..:001_huh: without a Whineeee :001_unsure:... without a Grrrrummble :glare: or a " I cant do this!" :001_huh: I actually think I spotted a few smiles :D! OOh Yes Life is GOOD!! ;)
  7. Thanks Amy. I know my dd is motivated by grades, she likes to see how shes doing. ( also use to ps grades) but I really would like to just have her see that shes accomplishing things in a positive way. appreciate your input on your grading system! :001_smile:
  8. Can you explain how you do your grading system?? Im trying to figure that all out also! Id appreciate seeing how others do it. Thanks :D
  9. The basic idea was to tear apart the workbooks (divide into 36 weeks) and place the lessons/pages in teh folder for each week. I did this for all of our books except her history book because some of the pages were back to back for different lessons, so I didnt want to have copy them etc. it was just easier to leave that one in thebook, I then just put a post it note in her folder with the chapter and questiosn she needed to do for that week. This is very new to me, but so far I like it. Just trying to get her into as much as I am. LOL and also Im trying to figure out a grading system.
  10. Do you keep notes of the lessons you do daily? I mean im just wondering if this is necessary?? I Live in NY, so Im wondering if I should keep track of what we do every day. Before I started this 36 week file system , I was just writing down what we did after we did it on a daily class schedule with the date on it. I had printed the quarterly sheets from Donna young to do my lesson plans. but I havent used tthem. Just wondering what everyone else does, if you do it just for records etc. or is the binder of her work enough?? :D thank
  11. I have this same feeling. Ive been really thinking about deleting it but then I go to do it and im like.. noo.. I think its because Im annoyed that its a super nosey highway so people can poke around and see what your doing or havent accomplished in your life! On the other hand there are family members who I wouldnt be in contact with otherwise. SOooo my decision for the moment was.. I placed most of my privacy settings so that Only I can see things. Hid most of my pictures etc. and I havent posted a status update in cant remember when.. I try not to go on there to often. Mostly I sign on & see if I have a msg from a friend or family member. But Ive really cut my time on there to almost none! Just cant seem to delete it for the "family" connection.. But I do wish I never signed up!!!
  12. PLease any suggestions for health &Safety. I would love to be able to just print out some worksheets for her on these topics. what are you using? I bought IF Health & Safety curriculum but now that Im looking through it, its more for a classroom environment with games etc for several kids. so its just not going to work. Thanks :D
  13. THanks everyone!! Im so excited because I think this is going to work really well and help with the organizing!! thank you all for the links & your input!! :D:D:grouphug:
  14. Just curious. How do you do your grading?? I want to do grades for my DD ( As she loves seeing how well shes doing & is use to them from PS) but I wasnt really sure how to tackle it. ;)
  15. I found a really long thread on this , I think it was( catholicmom? ) that suggested this system. Im really thinking it would be great for us. Now I cant find the thread & Im trying to remember exactly how she did this. Has anyone used this system ? Being new I didnt really make out any lesson plans because everyone said it would just fall into place and you'd probably have to rewrite them anyway.. But after going day by day.. I feel like we could easily fall behind in the books. I feel this 36 week thing would be great way to get us organized ( and we do need that! ) and moving smoother. DD also loved the idea of having a folder of our work for the week. :D any info is appreciated! thanks !! :D
  16. I went to the history.com link that was on the paper enclosed with the dvd and sent a contact to the ordering/store and explained what happen so will see what they say.
  17. Ive had that happen for days at a time also. Then it goes away. Strange and kind of annoying but nothing to worry about.
  18. Mine said packaging slip enclosed but there was not one? Hmm.. This kind of stinks! :toetap05: There is a website for resources to go along with the dvd.. maybe I can find some contact there.
  19. I received my Dvd today , Yah!! :D Question for those that received yours.. DId you have 2 Disc one's? Mine has disc one and two and then the back of the case has another disc one? Just wondering if there was a disc 3 or if they actually gave 2 of the disc ones??
  20. Being brand new to HS'ing I really appreciate everyone's input! Its very helpful to see how you all work through this program. We have been working through the lessons and I have started a new token/behavior type thing for both school work and home chores. so far its working!!! :D So Im planning to enforce the fact that she needs to read the book studies and then she can choose other books to read of her choice. I just decided to get more into the lessons and get things moving more smoothly before throwing it at her again. (being this is all new for us) So far today is going really well. Thanks again for your input!:D
  21. Thank you both! I did put the LOF on hold for a bit and we are jjust practicing basics. I found a site kidsnumbers.com and she did some division on there and Seemed to enjoy it. Ill be sure to try the Math drills site Thanks I think maybe I jumped into too much to start.. so we are easing into things now and I feel its going a little smoother. :D
  22. I guess I wasnt sure how to approach the "teaching" aspect, So we are doing more of an independent approach also, Im there for guidance but Im not "teaching" it so to speak. very new at this hs'ing thing.. so I guess its just a matter of what works, right? Im trying to think of ways to work around her being soo stubborn! & Get her to read the darn book! ahh :glare::D
  23. JUst wondering how its going for you? I'm finding it slightly confusing tryn to use the teachers book and how its layed out. Have you started a book study>? My DD is refusing to read the first "farmerboy" She loves to read, but says she cant read that kind of writing.. Which I think is just and excuse. She has new glasses so she can see. I tried reading it aloud but she hates doing read alouds. Last year she was in 4th n reading on 6th level. So shes a great reader.. But just hates reading chapter books. She did say she wants to read meet addy.. which is later in the book. should I just let her skip and read that one? Ideas???
  24. Okay so we are using LOF fractions and Spectrum MAth workbook (5th Grade) I chose these because 1- she loves the style of LOF ( loves reading the wmpy kid books) \. the spectrum i chose for extra practice and to keep on guide with her grade level. I realize this is only the second week,. the first week didnt go so good. (posted in another thread & thanks for the help there) My question is for a kid that knows the Math.. and still draggs to do it what could help? She s very good at her multiplication facts so thats not a problem. She's doing pretty well with the LOF except chapt 3 we hit one problem that was a 2 digit division and that completely threw her off.. she just starting whining..that she cant do that .. its too hard! SO Ive been just having her do about 20-30 practice questions n the Spectrum book.. just to review. Tommorrow we will go back to LOF. But I know the division is approaching us.. What am going to do with the "harder" work that she hates to even try?? I told her there are things that she "needs" to do and it can take 10 min (because I know she knows it) or she can cry and whine an it cn take 2 hours. I have found some website math games.. but anyone know of any that actually show step by step division?? Thought maybe that would help.. she doesnt get my "explanation" plus Im apparently not as fun as a computer game! ;)
  25. Thanks! I love the zoo idea.. being we started the classification 1st chapt of science!~ Im also planning a trip to the fenimore art museum right near us.. they have a special American Indian Art show going on now , with a HUGE totem pole that was brought across the country. (Native Americans- our first chapt of history) Maybe she will realize the connection.. ahhh the transition phase..:tongue_smilie: Hoping this week will be better. :D
