  1. We're going to use this for 9th this year.  We're going to do Windows to the World for the 1st semester and then EIL after that and through the summer.  We're doing Easy Grammar and Marie's Words for grammar and vocab (both are short and sweet; shouldn't take more than 30 minutes per day combined).  We're also doing Sentence Composing for High School followed by Lively Art of Writing because DD needs a bit more writing practice.

I'm looking at the easy grammar workbook with answers in the back. 180 lessons. Is that what your using or do you get the TM as well?

    thanks!

  2. I love EIL. There are many threads here about it. Sorry I missed yours. We have used Intro to Lit and American Lit. Both of my kids who are very different learning styles did well with it. I like the book choices. The paper topics are deep and thoughtful. I like the links to background information, and author information. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.

I do read the books, so I can discuss them with my kids. I agree that discussion is important and EIL does not give you any discussion points. It is written to the student, not the parent. However, I have never been able to conduct a decent discussion based on someone else's discussion points anyway, not SL, not TOG, it just doesn't work for me to use someone else's ideas if I don't really know what I'm talking about and have no opinion of my own.

Thank you! I also really liked the book choices and the honors options too.   Did you pay the extra $10 for the online sources etc. ? just wondering if its worth it.

thank you everyone else for you input! I appreciate it!

  3. Maddysmom26,

Many years ago, I was a student in the State of NY and remember taking “Global History†for two years.  Therefore, would the following work for you:

The following is another companion site:

With all the assignments, this textbook can easily be split into 2 academics years.  Good luck.

Thank you! I will check it out! appreciate your input!

  4.  Great resources!! I think I have decided to Biology this year with dd for 9th grade.

Question which resource would be best use -- I have my old Biology textbook from college a few years ago and I have the entire lab kit with microscope etc.. Do you think I could use this for her and add something to go with it..

Which resource listed here would you recommend to go with this.. maybe just a workbook style with tests etc.. to go along?

    Thank you!

  5. Hey Lindsey :)

Have you decided on a science? Or what "flavor" of history? How about starting a foreign language?

Dd's stuff (she's a bit advanced and eclectic lol):

English--outsourced class with Blue Tent Online

Language--outsourced Arabic 1 with TPS (we're a secular family but there wasn't much choice for Arabic so she's giving it a try)

Math--precalculus using Art of Problem Solving book (her strength)

    Science--chemistry (my strength)

History---ancient world history built around a Teaching Company lecture series plus about fifteen book sources (her interest)

    And her electives (her choices)

Intro to Archaeology---using a popular Archaeology 101 text (her strong interest)

AP Human Geography---my syllabus was approved by the College Board; small group with her cousin and a good friend (both public school freshmen); they started this summer

Oh I bet she would love the intro to Archaeology! what are you using??

    Thanks!

  6. Thank you all!

I was sort of going by the courses that her high school was offering for a good sense of what she needs for credits... because I am a bit nervous about it.  Not sure about the transcript part etc..

I'm thinking earth science, world history /geography

( already have algebra 1 Saxon materials. )

Need something for literature, grammar writing etc..

She has already taken 2 years of French and I believe has a high school credit for that but I would like her to continue it.

she also loves art so we will probably do something with that too.

plans on tennis lessons and would like to find a volley ball club.

Thank you for suggestions. I appreciate it.

  7. HI everyone.. Its been several years since I have been here. We homeschooled 5th grade then she went to a new middle school. Just finished 8th grade and we are now going to Homeschool high school.

So I could use any suggestions to get us started. She's not a huge fan of school, so curriculum that gets things done with out a big amount of in depth work would be great.

I picked up Saxon Algebra 1 but that is all we have so far.  Any ideas for non-Christian curriculums?

or maybe share with me what you are using for 9th grade.

    any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thank you!

  8. Wish we were in a state that had free k12..

the reason for missing enrollment deadline was because we reside outside of the district. if we were in the district than it wouldnt be a problem.

However we have friends in the district who spoke to the princ. and got papers for me to fax for enrollment, ..

so now I just have to do that and hope that they bend the deadline rule and take her.. at this point it would just take a lot of pressure off me as a single parent if she got in..

fingers crossed x thanks everyone for the responses!

  9. Apparently I missed the register deadline for what was going to be her "new" ps school. Im soo upset.. This was really a new start for us .. and while I didnt mind hs'ing.. she really didnt love it! Also being a single parent it was a bit of a struggle..

So Now.. I need to figure out what to do ..

If anyone uses any online schools , that are reasonable as far as cost.. I would appreciate any suggestions!

She Will be entering 6th grade

    Thanks :)

  10. ( that should say "Our" first year not are.. sorry still sleeping!)

So we are winding down .. 1 quarter left.

I have not been around here in quite awhile, wanted to sort of just live the HS'ing and see what happened.

But thank you all for the advice last winter , when I made this decision.. and also for the advice in the first quarter when we struggled!

well.. its been ups and downs..I thought it was rather relaxed after awhile , however I have decided that she will be returning to PS next fall. Its a new better school then the one she attended previously and this was trial HSing year.

As a single working parent.. its just too difficult for me to give all I think she needs. She also is very social and the new school has some great programs!

So I'm Just wondering if there is anything I should know for NY winding down the last quarter??

our local PS actually sent a letter offering my child to take yearly testing at the school. I was kind of shocked that they do that! But we are passing on that option. she tested last year at 4th so this year we do not have to.

Also I have tons of resources for 5th grade level. Can I list them here for sale?

    ..

oh and btw if things were different.. and I was married and had children I would definately start homeschooling from day 1. With a support system , I know that I would definately enjoy the experience much more!

  11. This is our first year homeschooling. 5th grade in NY .

Am I correct that testing is required everyother year until they start 9th grade?

So being that she tested last year in PS , would we be required to test this year?

    Thanks :)

  12. :) well I have to say that things are getting better.. It started out a nightmare and you all were very helpful & supportive! I took a break from the boards here thinking the advice was great.. but we needed to just live and explore..

and we made it through the first quarter! :D:party::cheers2:

I just finished typing up my report and we have actually covered slightly more than 1/4 of the work. Although I felt like we were doing minimal.. its getting done.. and she is exploring lots of new things, cooking & baking , photography ... writing solo plays.. singing , dancing..

We still have our struggles & she still wants to return to a New PS next year.. But my new motto is day by day!

Math is still not a favorite but Fred makes it slightly easier to get through.. we have discovered that she really enjoys the american girl books and the Addy series is what shes reading now! ( I'll take it!)

Science Im trying to get away from the text and do more hands on..

LA shes writing her own Tall Tale ...

We no longer "sit" at the school table for all work.. the kitchen is for math.. the couch is for LA & spelling. she also enjoys taking rides in the car and doing work. Oh and the bathroom is her reading haven :tongue_smilie: ( again I'll take it! )

I often find myself yelling Hooray inside when shes playing a game, cooking or just doing an everyday "thing" .. and i see her incorporating math into the situation!! :tongue_smilie:

So as we find our way.. I just wanted to say Thank you again for all your support!!

    :grouphug:

  13. So, if you don't know any German either, I would recommend getting a card game called LinguaFun. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1591253551/edutainingkid-20

It doesn't appear to be available on Amazon, but I bought mine about 5 years ago at Borders or Barnes and Noble in the kids' language section for about $10-15. It comes with a CD that pronounces everything for you, and there's pronunciation on the cards too. There are directions included for how to play about 6 games, variations of concentration, go fish, crazy eights, etc. These cards are especially valuable for German because they reinforce the different German word order (In case you don't know what that is, here's an example. In English we say, "I want to wash the car" and in German they say, "I want the car to wash.")

I don't really know of any good elementary level curriculums for German that would be appropriate for a parent who doesn't know German. I cannot recommend Power Glide Jr. The Learnables seems good *IF* it's compatible with your child's learning style. I like the Muzzy DVDs but they are too expensive new, and some people don't like them.

    HTH!

Great Thank you! Just wanted to something to introduce . .. this looks great. appreciate it! :D
