I am really struggling with how to do grades as this is basically our first year with them. When you use that system at the end of the year do you add up total points and total points missed then divide to get your grade??

We are using the EIL Intro to Literature. Is it me or is this layout of scheduling and assignments rather confusing to follow??? My head is spinning! :confused1:

If we do a combo of different things, studio, art history etc... and use various resources ? Or do you all stick to either studio or art history as separate classes? DD found a great book about caricatures , the history and a guide to draw them which she is very interested in , but I don't want to just list that as our resource because it probably wouldn't be considered a years worth of work. Does anyone know of any good free lessons online for different studio art projects?? So I guess what I am asking is how should we write this on our IHIP?? if we don't have a specific curriculum? Thank you! I was going to mail mine in but now I see on the district newsletter something about all paperwork now goes through BOCES not our school district except for the LOI . So I'm preparing it and waiting to get the information. I think this is something new as when we did 5th grade paperwork in went directly to school. Thanks again for the info!

Great Idea! That is exactly what we will do! I was thinking the same thing about the fitness part. The workbook I had purchased is called Nutrition and fitness 50 lessons. However its mostly nutrition from what I can see, So maybe I will use that in combo with your suggestion and just pull the nutrition parts. Thank you both for your input! From what I hear from my niece most students in her school only take one year of language which is the requirement for graduation. Right now DD does not want anything to do with going to college. But I really hope she changes her mind! So maybe we will add another class and she may change her mind by next year for the language, I hate to force her to French II because then it will just be a nightmare as that wouldn't be something I could really help her with anyway. So if we do an elective Home Economics / Nutrition/ Fitness class is that sufficient for a full unit ?? Trying to decide what to do , she really likes cooking. Any suggestions? Thank you !

Okay so in a few days we will be starting 9th grade! Last time we homeschooled was 5th grade I have posted in other threads what we are doing for curriculum but again here is a quick run down. Saxon Algebra 1 (1 unit) Power Basics Biology (1 unit) -with labpaq labs & extra bio texts for supplementing English 1 (1 unit) -EIL Intro to Lit -wordly wise 9 -easy grammar 9 Global History & Geography I the growth of civilization ( 1 unit) Artistic Pursuits High school ( 1 unit) - This will be drawing & some art history various resources PE ( 1/2 Unit) exercise, biking, archery & tennis lessons Okay so DD already has French I credit & also an elective credit for Rise of Nationalism. She does NOT want to continue French. Do you feel this is enough credits ?? or should we do a Home Ec class that would include nutrition/fitness lessons and we would do cooking/sewing etc.. for another Credit? I just don't want to overwhelm her with too much her first year home. She is going to do her 1/2 credit of health next year in 10th grade. Also any advice or tips on grading, scheduling etc.. to keep things simple and rolling for us as this is all new would be greatly appreciated. I have reviewed the grading forums etc.. but it still seems a bit overwhelming to me. I know we need approx. 3hrs a week for each full unit but would love to hear how you all break down your weeks. & your grading systems Thanks in advance for your input!

I have another question about this IHIP I still have to write ours up but I have time as I am waiting on the district to send back the paperwork. But If we are using say for Biology power basics.. but I also have a few other texts that we may use for reference , should they be listed separately under a reference section on the IHIP and not under that class because we will not be using them as our main text? I was planning on tackling Monday!! But woke to being out of water! so no coffee yet :closedeyes: ( we used bottled water for drinking) I am really hoping all of my college books arrive today and also the rest of DD's books so I can begin to get organized for the school year! also need to do laundry, vacuum, and finishing mowing the lawn! ohhh the joys of being a single parent! :lol: Off to find some coffee!! Has anyone used this?? Seems like a great source! I was google searching wordly wise book 9 and this popped up and I see that we can use this for free to take tests for each lesson among other things ! Just curious if anyone uses it ?? seems like you can do just about anything!

I know my mom has used applesauce in brownies instead of the oil and they were great! I would think using the applesauce you could also reduce the sugar with the cake maybe try half and see how it tastes.

Oh this is good question! NY is required 2 credits of PE , I was thinking 1 per year but maybe I should I do .5 for each year.

Power basics is not super rigorous from what I can see but I decided it would be best for her because this is our first year and she is not a big fan of school so I don't want to overwhelm her with tons of rigorous classes, ( the global history looks to be very ) so I thought I would add my college level bio book with the labpaq to supplement the power basics and add a little more to it. I was thinking about French 2 but I'm not sure what a good choice of curriculum would be to keep her interest. I believe artistic pursuits is a year long but I have to double check on that. I could also add some art history to it ( I have some college art texts from last year) or May do half year of that and half year of the home Ec. She is also very interested in Archery & shooting, so I think I may add that to the PE? As of right now she does not want anything to do with college.. So I'm basically trying to keep her classes and credits within the requirements of the local PS for college purposes hoping she changes her mind. Thank you for the feedback! I was really nervous about this year but I think now that the curriculum is pulling together we will be fine~!
