  1. My daughter has read Boxcar Children, American Girls, Judy Moody, etc. ad infinitum. I used to say she was an advanced reader, but she has been stuck in these series that really aren't my favorites for soooo long!!! How do I get her to move beyond them? Any book suggestions? Or just suggestions of how to encourage her to read other things? She will read other things for schoolwork, but on her own she reads so much of the other. Thanks so much!
  2. I like this question! I would often like to be a fly on the wall in someone else's home to see how their school days work. We do felt Bible story, memory verse, catechism and poem to memorize during our together time in the morning. Then they work separately with me taking turns with each. At the end of the morning we do read-alouds, but I am thinking of changing that. We might add in a snack break with read-alound midway through the morning.
  3. We have used Righstart A and B and are switching to Singapore this year. What does a daily lesson look like? I have the textbook, HIG, workbook and challenging word problems? What do you do in an actual day/week? Thanks!
  4. I don't think my husband would really know what housework was if it hit him in the face, but he is really, really great about other things. For instance, if I mention anything specifically that I would like his help with, even housework, he is Mr. Johnny on the Spot. I really love that I can depend on him like that. He is also very supportive of me in disciplining the kids and enables me to have nights out whenever I need them. In general, he is the most positive person I know, so that helps me adjust my perspective at times when I am dwelling on the negative. Great question to reflect on!
  5. Not to disagree with the caution that others are advising, but I do know that MRSA is found in the nasal passages of many of us whether or not we have an infection. That may have been why the doctor said they could go out, since people are exposed to it all the time anyway. My husband is a physician who actually studies MRSA in the lab, so I was interested to read this post. I will ask him what he thinks tomorrow. He is already in bed tonight.
  6. We are such dummies! I will blame it on being tired, but I am not sure that is it! Thanks for jogging our brains!
  7. This is driving my husband and I crazy. We are trying to solve: x + .28X = 100,000 We cannot for the life of us remember how to solve a problem like this. Is there an algebra website that would give us a refresher course? Thanks!
  8. Ok, the games you all have suggested are a great place to start. We have played some of them, but not all. I just need to get familiar with them, since it takes some of the enjoyment out of it for them when I am reading the directions for several minutes before we play. Thanks!
  9. I have taken the math card games book with my on vacation and tried to familiarize myself with the games, because we haven't been playing as many as I would like. It seems like if I had a handful of "go to" games, we would play more, than if we attempt to play every one. If you use the card games, what are the ones you and your children play over and over, either because of the skills covered or because of how fun it is? I have one finishing Level A and one finishing Level B. Thanks!
  10. Does anyone have a recommendation for a nice dinner out in Williamsburg? We did a historical Williamsburg restaurant last year, but would like something else this year. Any suggestions? Thanks!
  11. I used a recipe this week that we loved from allrecipes.com that was similar to the recipe given, but instead of Parmesan cheese it used cheddar.
  12. The Frist Center has a Medieval Treasures exhibit through June 7, if that interests your family. We have been to see it and thought it was fantastic. Docent led tours are at 1 or 1:30 pm (not sure which) everyday. http://www.fristcenter.org/site/calendar/
  13. Hi! I have honestly never played a single video game in my life, so I am very much in the dark on this topic. But, we did just buy a Playstation II for our kids for their birthdays this summer. I have a question before we take the plunge. My son is in love with the Star Wars Lego game from playing it other places. Just yesterday he mentioned that on one of the levels of the game it talks about hitting a character in his private area. Not just that it happened and he observed it, but that the game makes note of it. Is this true?? Please tell me he misunderstood the game. I will be really disappointed if I find out that kind of talk is a part of the games.
  14. Thanks for the advice. I will try both and see what we like best. I knew someone else would have already obsessed about this for me! :)
  15. You definitely would not be in the norm if you did not feel overwhelmed at some point. Perhaps you can give more details about why you are homeschooling and what things you think are important or what curriculums you are considering and someone can give you some advice from there.
  16. I would like to start labeling our laminated blank map with places we read about and study. How do you do this neatly? Doesn't the dry erase marker smudge after awhile? Plus, my handwriting is not that neat. Does anyone have another idea of how to label the map so that it stays nice-looking? I know this is not something to get worked up about, but I know if it looks messy it will bug me every day when I have to look at it. Thanks!
  17. Painting and spreading his own peanut butter or cream cheese on crackers or bagels. My kids like to use the little decorative spreaders that we have in the kitchen.
  18. This is what I have planned for next year so far, 3rd grader: Bible Stories with Betty Lukens Felt Set Scripture Memory as a family Rightstart C, supplement with Singapore wkbk occasionally as review Prima Latina Junior Great Books Series 3 Daily Geography Read-Alouds from Sonlight Readers from Sonlight K-1 grader (He will be a 6 yr.old.) : Bible Stories Scripture Memory Rightstart B Junior Great Books Dragon Series (K-1) Read-Alouds from Sonlight Bob books ETC Handwriting They do Science, History, Spanish, Art and Creative Writing at an enrichment program 2 days a week. Since they are doing Amer History next year, I will probably also order some of the Amer Hist CD's from Your story hour. Does this look complete? If anyone has used the Junior Great Books Series 3 books, I would love to hear your thoughts. I like the program, but the story selections for Series 3 didn't sound very interesting. Thanks for taking a look.
  19. There is a great one by H.A. Rey. I think it is called See the Circus.
  20. I am thinking about ordering these CD's from Sonlight to help us with Scripture Memory. If you have these CD's, do your children enjoy the music? My kids will be 6 and 8 next year, would I be better off still using the Steve Green "Hide Them in Your Heart" CD's? Thanks for the input. I hate to add to the slowly growing pile of "Things I Bought But Didn't Use". =)
  21. I don't know you, Chris, but I will pray for you and your family. I have just been walking this road with a dear friend, who actually was the offender in her marriage. Good things have already been said, so the only thing I will add is that a lot of churches offer free counseling, either from a staff member, or they have funds allotted to pay for church members to receive counseling somewhere else. Worth checking into if you wanted to go that route. It can be soooo life-changing for yourself and your family, so it would be a shame for finances to stand in the way. Just a thought! Take care.
  22. I have looked at both the Minimus and Prima Latina websites and am not sure which direction to go. Minimus looked cute, but I didn't find a good description of the skills covered. While Prima Latina looked very comprehensive and appropriately paced for a young child, would it be ... boring, compared to Minimus? Sorry if this is an unfair representation of the programs. It is just what I was able to pick up from the websites. Could anyone who has used either program tell me a little more? Thanks so much!

Rightstart A and B (so far) Geography Songs CD One Hundred Sheep (skip counting CD) Mary Pope Osborne's retelling of The Odyssey on CD SOTW Read-Alouds - Twenty and Ten, Socks, Boxcar Children, McBroom Tells the Truth, A Lion to Guard Us, The Sword in the Tree, Sarah Plain and Tall Betty Luken's Felt Bible Story Set American Girl Books (inspired dd's love for history) ETC Junior Great Books Curriculum Magic School Bus Great States Jr. game Suzuki violin Legos, Tinkertoys
  24. Hi! What are the other options for grammar that are out there other than R&S and FLL? If you don't mind, please give the name of the program and why you think it is good. Thanks so much!
  25. We would be interested. Let us know what we need to do. Thanks!
