  1. I delivered a stillborn baby three weeks ago. While I did appreciate the flowers, they are all gone now. I am hoping to keep the plants alive that I received in remembrance of our daughter. I also was glad to receive one of the Willow figuirines mentioned above. It was not something I would have thought I would like, but I do like there being a tangible remembrance. HTH, Melissa
  2. I think it might have been considered proper at one time to place an before a word that began with the letter h. I am basing this entirely on an episode of M*A*S*H. Hawkeye was on the phone pretending to be Charles for some reason, and he said, "an harmonica." BJ mouthed "AN harmonica?" back to Hawkeye. I just assumed Hawkeye was trying to have the same affect as Charles, and that was a blue-blooded way to talk. Thus ends the phonics lesson based on a '70s sitcom. Melissa
  3. The DAR put headstones up for my g-g-g-grandparents. They misspelled their last name (adding a letter) - also added a letter to my grandmother's maiden name. But the thing that really embarrasses me is they have my grandfather as being a drummer boy during the Civil War. He was 40 when the Civil War started!! Melissa
  4. :iagree: I just never mention anything about this book because I've never known anyone else who didn't wish to finish it.
  5. I have an aunt named Lenora. She goes by Nonie!!
  6. I wanted to comment on your mom's good taste! I love the names Genevieve and Gretchen!! What about Caroline? It's related to Charlotte (both feminine forms of Charles).
  7. I love Genevieve! I call 'no saving names'!! LOL! My twin girl names I have picked out are Genevieve and Lorelei. (As far as I know, I don't need twin girls' names, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared:)). Charlotte is nice or Carlotta. Lottie would be a cute nickname for either. I've also recently fallen in love with the name Miranda. I love the names you've already used. Keep us updated. HTH, Melissa
  8. Place them in a bowl of water. Toss the ones that float. They are usually okay up to a month after the date has been my finding. A friend of mine used to work at Kroger (a grocery store). He said that one of his jobs was to move eggs from expired cartons to new ones. :001_huh: HTH, Melissa
  9. None of my children play that game. However, there's a neighbor boy who is really into it. When he walks his dog, he is usually reading a book about WoW instead of acknowledging anyone's presence. His mother was horrified when I took my kids out of school. She wanted to know how they would learn to socialize.
  10. Thanks for this. I also have worked at one of those "learning centers" off and on for twenty years. I agree with your comments.
  11. I had forgotten about these. What's up, Doc? was one of my favorite movies in high school and college. I don't think I've seen it since then.
  12. Phoebe Chloe Tabitha You've gotten some neat suggestions. Congratulations on your baby! Melissa
  13. My dds (14 & 15) and I enjoy watching The Importance of Being Earnest with Colin Firth. Also, if B&W is acceptable, we enjoy the original movie, The Women. It is hokey and funny. We all enjoy it. HTH, Melissa
  14. I have purchased five cores from them. I usually piece-meal the books; so I haven't ordered a complete core, but I still have spent hundred of dollars with them. In May, I ordered their microscope, which was supposed to be THE one to have according to several sources. When it arrived, it didn't work. Their customer service wanted us to return it at our expense to try to fix it. My contention was that we should receive a new one since we opened it, and it didn't work. If we had used it and it broke, I could understand their stand. However, I did not think we should receive a re-furbished one when we paid for a new one. We were instructed to contact the company who makes the microscope. (After reaching an impasse with SL) At first, they wanted to send us a part to swap out. We again maintained that we paid money for a new microscope, and we shouldn't have to fix it. They agreed, and sent us a new one with a postage-paid label to send back the original one. So, we did receive a new one, but not because of anything SL did. I may continue to buy their Instructor Guides because the planning works for me and my soon to be five children. However, I will never buy any thing from them that I can purchase elsewhere. Not all that great a stand, but they'll lose a few bucks.:001_smile:
  15. I don't know why - chemistry is not my thing. It becomes fermented - a sour taste. I used to think it would only be sweet tea, too, but I started making unsweetened tea to cut down on sugar, and I found it would spoil, too. I am southern, and sweet tea has always been a staple in our home growing up - although I don't keep it at home now - trying to cut down on sugar and caffeine. While I was cutting back, I would order tea at Chick-fil-A, for instance, mixed half sweet, half unsweet. I had to quit doing it because the tea tasted spoiled. I could smell it when I'd bring it to my mouth. Perhaps, I am a super-taster when it comes to tea,:D
  16. Unsweetened tea goes bad nearly as quickly as sweet. I don't like tea that's older than two days - even in the refrigerator. The peach/raspberry sounds like a good idea.
  17. I taught in public school before my children were born. The last year I taught (1992), we were "strongly encouraged" to pass all of our students to the next grade. This was years before No Child Left Behind. Our school was given a lot of praise because we were the only one in the system that didn't keep any kids back. Empty praise in my eyes because we weren't really given any choice.
  18. My neurologist told me I had an extremely bad case - measured through a nerve/shock type test. I tried the stint, ibuprofen, etc. I finally went for the surgery when I could not hold a pen long enough to write a check. That was ten years ago - mine was pregnancy-induced. I still have a little pain in my wrist sometimes, but I can write and type now. HTH, Melissa
  19. :iagree: I was going to say the same thing!! Congratulations, Melissa
  20. I view Evan Moor's reproducible books differently than consumable workbooks. The EM books are intended to be reproduced while the consumables are intended to be used by one student (unless permission is given).
  21. I've read it many times - probably the first time was around age 14. My dd, also 14, really enjoyed it. I think it's a well-written coming of age story. One of my favorites. HTH, Melissa
