  1. Thanks :) How much time do both require? I don't want to get in over my head. I have a daughter who wants to do girl scouts too. Do they both have weekly meetings?
  2. Thanks. I called today to check on it and they said he would be a WEBELO and that they just started up in September, so we haven't missed much. Good idea... wouldn't we have to do both all year though with weekly meetings? Your number four scares me!!! However my husband or myself would be with him at all times. We aren't the parents to just drop our kids off.
  3. Which one do you think is better and why? This is for a nine year old boy who would like to make some friends.
  4. Here is our week 5 with HOD Bigger. http://joyful-homeschooler.blogspot.com/2012/10/week-5-in-american-history.html
  5. Good advice! Ahh, I see... I wondered how she knew the lingo. Crazy! I wonder if all charters do this? Another good idea!
  6. Please don't misunderstand me. I am not trying to be "cool"because of whta this friend said, I know I am already cool by my own definition ;) But what she said did make me remember how I wanted my homeschool (and my kids') to be. I want them to still have the social experiences. I want them to have that one or two special friend from childhood that they want to spend every weekend with. Not that I will let them :) But I want them to have that chacne for those relationships in life. I don't mind getting out and about. I think it is good for kids... and moms. I am not doing this because of what she said, it just helped me remember what I wanted at one time.
  7. How do I find out about this? Sounds great! lol I got this too.Was wondering if anyone would comment on that part of the coversation. I admit I was a little hurt by it... but I do want more activities for our kids outside the home. At least one good one.
  8. I want to at least try. It may not end up being for us, but I'll regret it if we don't try. Thanks for the link, looking into it now. One activity is a good way to start and find out if we are "that" family :) We tried scouts a couple years ago and there was only one other kid. I should call and check if they have more scouts yet, but it wasn't worth it to us at that point.. Hahaha this cracks me up! But I do want to try. My older two deserve that. 4-H is one I should look into, thanks! I think you are right. We will try to start with just one activity and see how it goes. Good advice! I do however want to give it a try... at least one activity. :) Glad it worked fo ryou. Hope we find the same.
  9. I don't unerstand? What do you mean? Do you kids go to a charter school? Does the school give you money? I don't know anything about charter schools..
  10. While visiting with a friend who is not a homeschooler, she stated that there are a number of homeschool families that attend her church. She said "They are the kind of homeschoolers I would want to be like if I choose to homeschool." "They are the cool homeschoolers, you know the ones who have their kids in sports and co-ops and such." This made me go back to the days when we first made the decision to homeschool our kids. This is the way I felt as well. I was determined to get my kids into sports and other social activities... well, apparently I wasn't determined enough. Here we are five years later and my kids are in NO activities. It made me sad to think that I am failing my kids in the social area. They literally are never around any other kids except for one neighbor boy who comes over about once a month or so. I have called on a co-op before but they required that I come and teach a class as well and it was still a pretty high price considering our income. I can't see myself teachign a class at this time or anytime soon for that matter. So my question is this....... How do I become the "cool homeschooler"? Where do I start and can I do it without breaking the bank?
  11. I just noticed the ages of the kiddos you were referring to. Do you think you would still feel the same if they were older? The thought never crossed my mind when this child was younger, I only started thinking about it this past year... Most premature babies catch up by the time they are two. .
  12. This is true. I don't think at that time I would have held him back and yes he would still be small if a year behind as well. He does do fine with all his 4th grade material.... idk I guess I just wonder if it is the right decision sometimes.
  13. Ha! I was typing my comment telling how he was premature at the same time you were typing this. lol
  14. Thanks for the comments. My son's bday is July31st, he was a preemie and has had a hard time catching up size wise. He isn't having a hard time doing 4th grade work though. I feel that if he was in public school though it would be really hard on him for sports and such because of his size. He doesn't even make it onto the percentile chart the docs use for his weight and height. That is the main reason I question what grade to place him in. Does that even make sense or am I just being an overprotective mom?
  15. How do you decide what grade to place your child in? I realize they can be working at whatever level in each subject that suits their skills best, but I mean grade level for testing or legal placement. Do you find out how your state places them and go off of that? Or do you go off of what level work they are doing in MOST subjects? Or do you go by your own judgement? I thought my son should be in 4th but now I am seeing many other homeschooling boys his age are in 3rd. A while back I thought about holding back a year but never went through with it... Any thoughts?
  16. Week four Bigger Hearts for His Glory. http://joyful-homeschooler.blogspot.com/2012/10/john-smith-and-pocahontas-week-4-in.html
  17. We are using HOD's Bigger and NOEO science. We have added in Spelling Power that we do on the days there isn't any dictation. We only do NOEO on the lighter days of HOD's science or where it fits in our schedule. In my opinion if you plan it well you should be able to add in a few extra things and still finish by lunch time. If I can do it with a new baby and a toddler while teaching two I bet most people can :) I am not very organized either.
  18. I was pretty late getting this done but here it is. HOD Bigger week 3 http://joyful-homeschooler.blogspot.com/
  19. :) Great to hear! We are on unit 3 and I woke up sick this morning. The kids actually protested when I said we wouldn't be doing school today. So about 10am I gave in and we did just the 'fun' stuff. Which of course is our HOD stuff :)
  20. My 2nd grade 7yr old daughter has been reading the magic tree house books for a while. She just started reading the Sarah Plain and Tall books. Not sure what level those are or what to vote on your poll so I just picked other.
  21. Puberty at NINE!!!! Really is that how early it starts? Seriously?????
  22. Oh wow!!! By the time your boys are all 10 you will be able to mentor all the other mothers of 9 yr old boys :) We all know they will need it!
