  1. I'm thinking about ordering a few of this one. It would work for so many situations, like pregnancy loss.
  2. Good mornng :D My day: --walk to/from gym for training session --school w dd: math, APHG test review --daily things --Thursday-specific tasks --gardening: weeding --check payment info for our cruise --call dr about Rx that drugstore didn't receive --stand over dd until she writes the thank-you note for her camp scholarship --put dinner in crockpot --go to physical therapy at 5:15 --dh Chinese class 5:15-6:45 --dd ballet class 5:30-7:00 --someone get ds at the airport at 10:30
  3. Today I will walk to and from the gym for my training. I have physical therapy scheduled later today---I hope the issue is a minor one!
  4. Envirothon---high school, teams of 5, state/provincial then national competition http://www.envirothon.org
  5. Lisa, we use insuremytrip.com for trip insurance. You enter your data (countries, trip length, and so on) and instantly receive quotes for insurance coverage from competing companies (no need to talk to salespeople).
  6. I'm sorry, but I just have to laugh  Signed, Your sister in whiplash
  7. We had a gigantic bouncy slide for dd20's graduation! The kids (ages 20-5) had a blast :D
  8. 1. My daughter's classes were chosen by her (well, except for English---she'd be happy never to take an English class again ;)). She says she is more motivated to study when she's interested in the topic. To which I replied "duh" 2. Ballet, her main extracurricular, consumes many hours a week. Again, it's her choice to participate.
  9. I agree! Homeschooling would be a lonely place without all of you :grouphug: I try to pass on what I have learned :)
  10. Yep. She's had so much bio informally through Science Olympiad events that I think this will be successful. I'm planning on 10 hours a week, 16 labs (one a week, basically--though there are weeks w/o any and weeks with two), seven tests, hopefully culiminating in the SAT Bio (prob M) exam in January. Bio is her least favorite science. Her favorites are environmental science, geology, and astronomy. She's excited to get bio out of the way to focus on more interesting topics ;)
  11. My emerging plan for next fall when she'll do bio on a block schedule (her choice) so she can get to the preferred AP Environmental Science during the spring (again, her choice): • readings, note-taking, and answering the book questions (using the macaw iBooks vesion) the day/night before • discussion plus an activity or lab with me every day • with 7 unit tests (ch 1-6, 7-10, etc) which I will write
  12. Good morning :) Not the best night's sleep due to a rainstorm, but I was able to sleep until 7:30 so that was good. Ahead: --walk during dd's Arabic oral final --school w dd: math, chem, APHG (9 days until the exam!) --daily things --Wednesday-specific tasks --gardening: plant tomatoes and peppers, weeding, etc --make physical therapy appointment for me --emails as followup to discussions at last night's meeting --some vacation prep --read a new book :D Have a great day
  13. Today I will go walking while dd takes her Arabic oral final. I'll also garden---how much, I'm not sure, as it poured overnight and the ground may be very spongey where I want to work. (Dd has an appointment next week at the clinic. The lovely secretary found us a spot when the overall scheduler could only see June 3 :))
  14. We have a Teaching Company video series called "Understanding Greek and Roman Technology"----he might like that one :)
  15. Lots to do today! --gym w dh --school w dd: math (SAT Math 2 subject test prep), chem, APHG test review, quiz dd for her Arabic final if she wishes --make appt at GI clinic --schedule physical therapy for my bicep/shoulder issue --daily things --Tuesday-specific tasks --AP paperwork for dd after 1:30 (better find directions to the school lol) --make side dish or dessert for tonight --gardening???? --dd ballet 5:30-7:30 --annual used book sale and dinner tonight for homeschool group
  16. Gym this am while dh has his training session :) While at the doctor yesterday, I picked up an order for physical therapy. I'll call later today to get started.
  17. This year 9th grade dd does four subjects with me and two outsourced, online classes. She dances ballet as her main extracurricular and social outlet. She also participates on a homeschool group Science Olympiad team. That season runs from November to March. She studies and practices for her events during the school day and on the weekends. Mondays---no outside activities. We call it our mellow day. One subject flows into the next. We'll take a relaxed hour for lunch and whatever we feel like doing. We start about 9am after discussing the week ahead. Sometimes she'll end at 3, sometimes at 4, sometimes after dinner. I do leave for 45-90 minutes for the gym during the late morning. Tuesdays---work from 9 until 3:30ish, with ballet from 5:30-7:30 (later at times for rehearsals). Wednesdays---online Arabic class 11:30-1. I try to have her complete two subjects before class. She takes 30-45 minutes for lunch, then we put our heads down and work steadily until 4:30. Ballet is 6-8 (maybe later). Thursdays---I go to the gym while she has her second Arabic class of the week. Thursdays are pretty much like Wednesdays. Ballet is 5:30-7 (maybe later). She may do some work after dinner if there is no rehearsal. Fridays---work from 9 until 3 or 4. Ballet is 6:30-8. Saturdays--ballet class 11-1, rehearsals anywhere from 1:30 or 2 until 4 or 5. Dd and her friends leave the studio for lunch (university town---many places to eat!). They also bring schoolwork for during the break. Dd will work on Arabic or do some coding for fun. Sundays--some weeks she'll finish up her English work (the class week runs Monday to Sunday midnight), spending 30 minutes to 2 hours. English is her least favorite subject and tends to be "forgotten" ;) During dd's free time, she likes to read, read fanfiction, text her best friend who lives across the country, code on her computer, watch travel videos, listen to music, etc. Next year will be much more structured because she'll be taking Arabic at the university four mornings a week. We don't know yet which class she'll take, either 10am, 11am, or noon. She'll need to be more disciplined about starting work early in the morning! Dd is also considering adding another extracurricular with a 2 hour meeting a week, prep work to do at home, and a three-day event in March or April. September could be interesting ;)
  18. Stressful dr visit w dd---referral to GI clinc at the children's hospital. I am thankful for the 100 minutes of exercise early today. I may need to order many, many cubic yards of mulch to get through the month. The shoveling and wheelbarrowing is cathartic.
  19. Today didn't go as planned. Dd's doctor appointment ran very long and ended in a referral to the GI clinic at the children's hospital. She cried at the office :( So she just did English, Arabic, and math today. I worked out, did laundry and basic housework and basic gardening, and took care of emails. Dh and I went to Costco for regular shopping, to scout out foods for ds's graduation party, and to talk over dd's issues. We grilled dinner and are now watching a travel dvd dd picked out at the library :)
  20. Well.. 1. I only have one kid at home. 2. Even though she's my only homeschooler, her older siblings attended very rigorous high schools. I have a good idea of planning for high school and of the competition she faces for college admission and scholarships. I am actually relaxed about the process...until she throws me the next curve ball ;) 3. I don't work outside the house. 4. We have no pets. 5. I don't have elder care issues (my parents are deceased). 6. Research is a hobby. A sick hobby, but one nonetheless
  21. I have psychology, environmental science, comparative government, and (maybe) calc AB to work on. I'm alternating between planning psych and APES. Psych has so.much.stuff, oy! I'm sure APES has just as much content, but I am much more familiar with the topics so it's easier to plan. I don't have the Comp GoPo book yet because the two I'm looking at are hovering at $120 used. I'm hoping prices go down as the spring semester finishes.
