  1. That's where I live :) There's an train station just south of the UD campus. It's easy to get a train to Philky, D.C., and NYC. Lots of people commute each day. Megabus has a stop on the north end of campus, with multiple buses daily to NYC, Philly, Baltimore, and D.C. My older d has taken megabus to NYC and D.C. multiple times. My parents used to take the train to connect in Philly or D.C. I'd.be happy to answer any questions.
  2. D has taken classes from Blue Tent for four years--Honors English 1 and 2, AP Lang, and (now) Senior English.
  3. Yesterday I did 35 min of hill sprints on the gym bike, plus some mobility work. My hips are loosening but my knees are still tight. Thus morning was supposed to be my usual weight workout, but I had to take d to her allergist appointment that ran really late. It was too late fir me to spend an hour+ at the gym. I'm going to do yard work once she gets started on school stuff. I have a Pop Pilates class at 6 for core and cardio.
  4. APES is a lot easier after having chem. D's order of science: --the old AP Physics B (this was when she thought she was headed into math for college) --chem --APES and bio the same year but diff semesters --math-heavy astronomy She is graduating a year early. The physics was during her 8th grade year.
  5. Yesterday I cleared invasive species (rosa rugosa, wild berries, garlic mustard) from the back of our property that borders a creek. I also pulled old woody vines (cut them last year) from the trees. It took 2.5 hours of steady hard work :D I do this each spring before the native shrubs leaf out. It makes me so happy to see fewer and fewer invasive in our suburban yard each year :) Today: weighs at gym followed by the walk home (oldest d had my can overnight; dh dropped me) and then a Pop Pilates class tonight.
  6. I am so happy for you and your family! Congratulations
  7. I am doing this exercise for Future Me. I refuse to be a frail little old lady. I want to travel. I want to be active in my grand children's lives. I want to be able to live independently as long as possible. I like seeing my arm muscles. I like being able to carry heavy boxes. I like being able to shovel and spread mulch in my hilly yard without feeling sore the next day. I like being able to tackle difficult hikes when we travel to national parks. I like being strong :D
  8. Some people hyperextend a bit past setting the hips in place so that in competition judges will see they completed the lift. (Whoa, horrible sentence!) But they still keep a neutral spine. Was he really bending far back? That sounds like a recipe for lower back issues!
  9. Yes :) I've been working for almost two years through and after a shoulder injury. Today I started with 6 reps at 95lb to warm up, then I did 2 sets of 6 reps at 135lb (last week I maxed at 135lb). That felt good so I added 5 lb. My form was still perfect so I went for 145lb! The first 5 reps were great but I broke form (curved my lower back) on the last one. Last fall I was able to do *1* deadlift at 135lb. Dh thinks I should test my maximum soon to see what I can do. I'm kinda scared to do that. I still feel intimidated being the only woman in the weight area at the time Inwirk out.
  10. Today: weights this am w a new deadlift PR of 145lb (x6!) gardening, weeding and cleaning up PopPilates class tonight (45 min plus warmup/cooldown)
  11. Carrie12345, I am not seeing any changes in my midsection either :( I started gaining fat there 18 months ago (?). I still have a visible waistline but am pudgy. However, I have visible arm, shoulder, calf, and quad muscles :D I try to concentrate on those gains---though that can be difficult. This week's exercise plans: MWF lifting w 10-15 min HIIT finishers TTh moderate intensity cardio W Pop Pilates class (next week begins 2x week!) Today for MIC I did hill sprints on the gym bike as it was rainy. Last night I went for a 3mi walk after dinner. I am closely tracking my food, calories and macros, for the month of April. If I track AND get at least 30 active minutes a day, I can reward myself with new capri length leggings and more sports bras. I'm aiming for 1400-1600 calories with 90+ grams of protein. I did an online macro calculator which says I should get 122g protein, 53g fat, 163g carbs with 23g fiber (all +- 5g). That 122g is so hard for me. Last summer I focused on getting 75+g protein, which made a huge difference in my strength and energy. 90+ is def doable.
  12. I hope the phone interview went well today and that he advances to the in-person round! Ds had *3* levels of interviews for one of his summer internships
  13. We've been keeping $500 in cash on hand since Sandy. We watched what happened just a bit north if us. We have a small locked safe in the basement hidden among other things. Important papers and our passports are also stored in it.
  14. Congratulations
  15. I've been dealing with senior year things and early seasonal allergies so haven't really had time to post. My workouts continue with strength and 15ush min of HIIT MWF. Today I deadlifted my old one-rep maximum of 135lb for 3 sets of 8 :D I take a Pop Pilates class every Monday evening. I notice that I feel neck strain when I am holding an incurrent position or when it's a difficult movement for me. In that case I put my head down on the mat. The gym has been offering free classes this month of their 3 types of group training sessions. I've tried all 3 and really like the "build" version which is focused on strength and form (surprises no one ) I'm taking another one tonight, plus a HIIT type tomorrow night and again on Saturday. I'm keeping a log of the exercises for each session so I can recreate them in the future :D Wr don't have money for group training in the budget right now.
  16. Absolutely! She broke down this past weekend with the stress, anxiety, and uncertainty. She made the decision to not run for a leadership position at the state Youth in Government conference next month because those 3 essays were just too much.
  17. My 17yo is taking 3 uni classes this semester in areas of very high interest. On Thursdays she has the classes back-to-back-to-back from 9:30 to 1:30. She is exhausted, cranky, and famished when I pick her up. I'm glad you cancelled the other class!
  18. It has consumed a large portion of my "free" time for the past 8 years. No exaggeration.
  19. Sabrina and Sebastian, I graduated from Holy Cross in '88 :D Congratulations on all the good news :) and massive hugs for the disappointing news :grouphug:
  20. When we had 2 in college, our calculated EFC for each kid was 60-65% of our EFC when we had one in college. That was an unwelcome outcome
  21. Oh quark and lisabees, reading between the lines, I'm sorry about yesterday's news :grouphug:
  22. The D.C. area has a very high cost of living. Would the D.C. job's pay take that into consideration?
  23. We'll be starting the day with a coffeecake baked in a cake pan :D
