  1. D is taking her last AP right now! I am done, done, done with teaching  I am so excited for her next step in life :) and for what my future brings :)
  2. Hi all :) End of the semester craziness here! I've signed up for a May challenge at my gym--top three % body fat losers win cash! Of course, that means that I had to have that and my weight measured  I am the heaviest I have ever been (non-pregnant) yet my clothes fit the same as they did 15 pounds ago. I guess I've gained a good deal of muscle from all the lifting. So yesterday I took a boot camp class in the morning and a Pop Pilates class in the evening. Today was a HIIT w kettle bells class. Tomorrow will be a repeat of Monday with some heavy gardening in between the classes (I'm digging a new bed, approx 14' x 40' but kidney-shaped). On Thursday D takes her last AP exam at a school an hour away. I hope the weather will be decent for me to walk while she's in the exam. I'll do more digging. Friday's exercise plans are uncertain but will involve more digging lol And Saturday will be a day off because I'll be too busy with other things.
  3. I suggest the first AP, whatever year it is taken, be a subject area that the student finds genuinely interesting. D took AP Human Geography as a ninth grader. She will be majoring in International Studies, Arabic, and Chinese in college after a gap year spent studying in Taiwan.
  4. Perfectly normal for almost-gone kids to "soil the nest". It's a period of pushing parents and the familiar away, and then switching sides to wanting to do things together. A parent can get whiplash.
  5. D will be getting luggage from us as her high school graduation present. She needs sturdy yet lightweight stuff for the overseas travel beginning with this year! (For those who don't read the college board, she'll be taking a gap year to study in Taiwan via Rotary :) ) College graduation--a car. We gave ds our 10yo Corolla. We're looking for something similar for older d for <$4K.
  6. My mother's parents and their siblings built a cabin in the Sierras in the late 40s. It's been modernized over the years but is still quite rustic. I grew up visiting the cabin when we were in CA to see the families. Last summer dh and I joined my aunties and a rotating group of cousins during their annual 2 weeks there. I dream about owning something similar, but there aren't those kinds of mountains here. I am so not a beach person. We do like to rent houses or condos when we vacation.
  7. Seconding 8 re nonmatriculated students---At our state flagship, high-school-age nonmatriculated students are limited to 7 credit hours per semester. It took a short email mentioning her 4.0 for the restriction to be lifted for D to take 11 credits this semester. Online registration was blocked until then.
  8. D will graduate with 29 credits from our state flagship (not through a DE program) and another state's flagship (accelerated summer program), all in Arabic and Chinese. None of the credits will transfer. I'd say they would be used for placement purposes, but that's untrue as she will have to take oral and written placement exams in both. Her university will accept 5 of her APs to satisfy core requirements for 16 credits. (She'll need to take only 3 other classes outside her major and the 2 languages, wfich may turn into majors.)
  9. Good luck, all! D had 2 exams the first day last year, at 2 different schools :eek; So glad that won't be necessary this year!
  10. Our state flagship doesn't accept CLEPs and neither does the school d will be attending.
  11. My older d had pain like that. Hers was due to a soy allergy. When younger d started having stomach/intestinal pain with no other symptoms, we went to the allergist right away. We eliminated her allergens but the pain remained. She had all kinds of tests done, including a very frightening episode of a potential serious genetic disease. Everything was fine yet she was still in pain and losing weight rapidly. It turns out she has a severe dairy (not lactose) intolerance. Once we eliminated all dairy, even trace amounts, she felt better and regained weight. Accidental cross-contamination with dairy products make her sick for 40-48 hours.
  12. The counselor letter was incredibly difficult for me to write. I worked on it for an entire month last summer. i created a narrative for D revolving around how her chosen coursework meshes with her passions and goals for the future. I also touched on situations when she had to advocate for herself to get to where she is. I ate a lot of chocolate and drank a lot of wine that month, my language became more blue ;), and I cried from frustration multiple times.
  13. She has AP Environmental (area of interest) and AP Calculus AB and did not take any SAT2s. Only DE classes are in languages :) Traditionally-schooled older dd (English/French/theatre, graduating next month!) only had AP Bio. I forbade her from taking AP Calc because her stress level would have been too high, despite being able to do well.
  14. I have a non-STEM student heading to college for International Relations plus both Arabic and Chinese (to graduate w professional-level fluency in both languages). Her interests informed her course selection: Ancient World History + AP Human Geography AP Comparative Gov + AP Psychology AP US Gov + AP Macroeconomics (She's graduating a year early, so I moved up her 8th grade US History, very much a high school level class, onto her transcript. The transcript is done by subject.) For science she has just four listed (because I was running out of space w all her other languages!). She did Chemistry Biology + Environmental Science (semester-block each) Astronomy (high level w much math) Editing to add I forgot to answer your question: Will he have 4 sciences on his transcript? If so, he can study whatever he wants. You might want to check the schools to which he may apply to see if they require particular science classes. Some do.
  15. Can we borrow your owl for the weekend? ;)
  16. Yes, you'd pay later to send scores. However, AP scores are self-reported on college applications. There is no need to send scores until the summer after senior year. If the student takes even one AP exam senior year and selects a college to receive the scores, all of the AP scores from the student's testing history will be sent :D
  17. I second Ulta. Do you use a primer? I've found that makes so much difference in the staying power of foundation, both mineral and liquid.
  18. D has committed to Indiana University :) She will study International Studies with a concentration in Diplomacy, Security, and Governance. In addition, she will continue her study of Arabic and Chinese. Why IU? She was first drawn to IU after learning that they added an Arabic Language Flagship program to their existing Chinese and Turkish programs. (See here https://www.thelanguageflagship.org/content/home for general Language Flagship info). Everyone she met during her long visit was encouraging and friendly. She did not feel like an oddity for wanting to pursue two critical languages at a high level. And, of course, the very generous scholarships helped  Her plan is to complete both the Arabic and Chinese Flagship requirements which include both study and internship periods abroad while receiving her BA from IU. This will only be possible because D has been studying both languages at the university level and because... D will be spending the '17-'18 academic year as a Rotary Youth Exchange student in Taiwan  She will live with two or three host families in New Taipei City while she attends a Taiwanese high school and (hopefully) perfects her Chinese. D's current Chinese prof is from Taiwan and is so excited for her :)
  19. I like to garden on MD. Traditionally I planted my tomatoes that day, but with my new(ish) fenced-in raised-bed garden, I can plant them earlier in May :) I'll probably buy some bedding plants to fill in among perennials that were planted last year. Dh will grill dinner and make me adult beverages while I read my kindle on the deck after gardening :)
  20. Dh does all the post-dinner clean-up :D He puts the food away and packs his lunch. He washes the pots and other hand dishes. He loads and runs the dishwasher. He wipes the counters and stove top. He prepares the coffee. In the morning he empties the dishwasher and the dush drainer :)
  21. I have been laid low by a cold plus spring allergies. The last time I went to the gym was Wednesday evening :( I can't bend or look down without a pounding sinus headache, even when medicated. I've done some gentle gardening and also cleared invasives along our creek bank. Carrie, I too have scratches all over my arms and a lovely one on my cheek thanks to a Rosa rugosa cane! I am hopeful that I will be able to attend Pop Pilates class this evening. I ate like crud this weekend because I couldn't taste much.
