  1. One year when I was lamenting how much my guys had forgotten to a teacher friend, she laughed and said that every fall, the teachers joke in the staff room over this. The kids will seriously tell them that Mrs. _____ didn't teach them any of that! She also never taught them anything else. After a couple of weeks it all seems to come back though. Hang in there! With a bit of patience he'll be reading again. For what it's worth, I've started some review in the summer, and have my new reader reading some easy stuff over the summer so I won't have to go through this so much.:glare: Karen ds 12, 10, 5, 4
  2. I've had a vivid memory of white geometric shapes for a long time. It wasn't until I was an adult that I realized that they were trusses that were painted white - from the back shed of our house. I used to be put in a baby seat on the floor when my parents were working in the basement!
  3. but we didn't care for it. The author is a great lady from up here in Ontario and came highly recommended by a French teacher friend. I've also heard some mom's love it. It's set up similar to what French lessons are in the school system. I had wanted more of an immersion method, and so we went with Power Glide Junior and reading some French books to Aurolog's Tell Me More when the kids were 9 or so. I'm not sure this has been optimum, but it's working tolerably for us. Karen 4 boys aged 12, 10, 5, 4
  4. I've always put together most of my stuff, but next year for the first time I'll have four boys to teach, so I'm using Amblesideonline. The last couple of years, I've dabbled with some and found them boring, but sometimes soo easy from a Mom point of view. Punks
  5. but this year, I'm starting to use Amleside online so it is easier to just type the assigments into a spreadsheet and go from there. Punks:mellow:
  6. last summer. It costs a lot ($20-25 000 CAD), but Ontario has a rebate program right now. Also we got it way cheap because my husband is in the industry. He tells me that the payback should be in 7 years with the life expectancy of 20 years for those who pay retail cost. Replacement costs are lower too since you don't have to replace the ground loops. We made some other changes too- insulation, new windows and switched to electric hot water from natural gas. From Sept to March, our total energy bills (electric+ natural gas) were 25% lower. I'm told the real savings will be in the summer with the air conditioning. We haven't had a season of this to prove it though. We also use a wood stove. In past years I used it every day, but with the water furnace, we roasted ourselves out on warmer days, so I didn't use it so much. I'm so glad we're off the natural gas. Now we just need to find a viable way to get off the hydro grid! Punks
  7. I realize it's after noon and you've already made your decision, but my guys (10 &11) like this program. The 10yo is way ahead of the 11 yo with at least a couple of years of material left. Hope whatever you do works out! Punks
  8. Yeah, we've been doing it with a 6th grader and an advanced 4th grader this year. We didn't get it all done, but both could handle the content just fine. We'll finish it next year, then go on. I have the CD, but found that reading on the computer was too difficult so I printed it out. That worked better. For the study guide notes, I increased the font, and added lines for answers since note keeping on a separate sheet of paper was complicating matters as well. I've done the same for the tests. I'm using the Donna Young schedule for next year. I only wish I'd found it earlier this year.
  9. I haven't done either one, although I read about a quarter of The Purpose Driven Church. One I'm doing right now and absolutely love is "Experiencing God". We have people from all sorts of walks taking it and everyone I've talked to have said that it has changed their lives in exciting ways. It's thirteen weeks and has daily assignments that don't take too long. My eleven year old is taking it with us if this gives you an idea of the difficulty level. I hope whatever you decide to study will be an encouragement to both of you! Love and prayers! Punks
  10. We're using Tell Me More for French. It includes 3-4 levels with language recognition, spelling etc. They now have it in homeschool version. My guys are 10 and 11 and are able to use it even though it's recommended for older students. It cost more to buy, but it included so many more levels than Rosetta Stone. In the long run it will cost quite a bit less. It has very high reviews for foreign language software (even higher than RS). Punks
  11. With 5 kids, I've tried quite a few and by far preferred Motherease. I found their covers didn't leak and lasted well through 2 kids. So did the diapers. And little babies didn't have blowouts like with disposables. Have fun! Punks in Ontario
  12. My name is Karen. I have an incredible husband and five kiddos. My oldest is 21. Then I have four boys aged 11, 10, 5 and 4. We've been homeschooling the boys from the beginning. I've been checking out this board for a few years now. I've gotten a lot of ideas for my 4 yo from the special needs board. Thanks to the imput of the wonderful people, he's pretty normal now! We use a fairly eclectic mix of materials. Everything from Christ Centred Curriculum and of course SOTW, Prof B and whatever else comes my way.
