  1. I just wish dd's college would say something at least somewhat definative. They keep moving the "let you know date" further and further out. It was July 1, then July 15, now we are hearing by the end of July. Her move in day is Aug 15. 2 of her classes are already online. The others are supposedly in classroom but they haven't finalized that yet. They still could change. In fact, they said her entire schedule could change without notice at any time. They have said: (1). all classes might be online. (2). might have half the class come on M and have on W. (3). might have 1/3 of class come Tues, 1/3 come Thurs and 1/3 come Saturday (!) Masks will be required in all buildings unless they are not. Face shields should meet criteria but they probably won't. Labs and libraries and dining facilities will be open but not sure the capacity or hours. If sick at all with anything, out of classrooms and public facilities (ie dining hall, library) for 10 days (how do you manage that?) Oh and deadlines for not moving into the dorms without financial penalty started June 1. If all online and support facilities closed or limitations are too great, then she will stay home. At this point, I just want to know what we are facing so we can make some financial decisions. Also, what if they move her classes to times that conflict with other obligations? I get it that all this is in flux. That situations are changing rapidly. I would not want to be the person making decisions for entire universities. This is a whole new situation for them. However, time is ticking away.
  2. so far dd's college is summer on line and hopefully fall in person. She has registered for classes (both online and in person) and has a dorm room assignment for Fall. She has labs next semester so I would think that has to be done in person......I guess we will see.
  3. I too am very concerned about what all this is doing to US economy and world economy. Many small business are certainly being hurt. I keep hearing on the news and other media to "buy local." I know many who would love to support local businesses via online shopping or take out. However most I've spoken with IRL are concerned with losing their incomes through furlough. Many have already been furloughed. Many are told to expect furlough. Colleges are online now and many "kids" have moved back home which means increased spending on necessities and in many cases, no refund (yet). That means not much margin for non necessities. I don't know a good solution here. But if businesses remain closed and jobs are lost or furloughed, the economy cannot grow
  4. My gym is closed so no reformer Pilates for me. And it has rained for almost 2 weeks straight. I'm focusing on nutrition and keeping the back/hip pain away. Today I need to start what mat pilates I can do: dead bugs, leg lifts, 100s, ect.
  5. I don't know. Yesterday morning, when we arrived at the dorm for check out....they said the students would have access to meal plan (it is done through ID card) for the duration of the semester (second week in May). Since we live abut an hour away, we thought we could use at least some of it at the stand alones (chick fil a, pho, deli, etc) and the fast mart type store. Once all this is over, we could drive up there periodically (it is a gorgeous campus to walk). By the time we finished the work up there and checked out (4 hours later), they said no, we would not have access after 24 hours. They said the reason being, they *might* be offering refunds. One thing they said was definite is that no money would "roll over" or be applied as credit for returning students. We went to the fast mart (very near dd's dorm) and bought about $100 of things she wanted/needed. Then we stopped in the coffee shop (no ready made food/drink, just prepackaged) and got a few things. About $50. But, that still leaves close to $600 on her meal plan and then there is the dorm money we will be out. I know lots of folks are in this situation. I know lots of things are up in the air. But, it is concerning financially.
  6. We got an email today saying dd's move out day is tomorrow! We went up today (we live about an hour away) and moved about 90% out of the dorm. Tomorrow we will go up and get the rest and do the cleaning before turning in the key. I am just so sad for her. She loves college. She loved her dorm room. She had some nice friends. The campus is really beautiful right now with things starting to bloom. The new student center just opened. She joined some clubs this semester. It is all over. Everything, including advising is online now. We will lose about $2000 in dorm/meal plan. I'm just tired and overwhelmed
  7. All of youngest dd's activities are cancelled. Oldest will know more on Monday. I'm concerned about mine. I take a Pilates reformer class twice a week due to chronic pain. It helps tremendously with my pain and missing classes (even if I do mat exercises at home) always results in increased pain and mobility issues. But, I'm concerned about going into a gym environment. And the kids camp will run next week since schools are out.
  8. Also tongue tie, palate issues. Sorry it took me multiple posts to get what I wanted to say out.
  9. Oral exams can sometimes tell if the teeth are growing in properly or if there is any other issue such as tongue thrust, lisp, etc.
  10. Sorry, I did not read all the posts. Have you had a hearing test yet? Dental or Orthodontic evaluation? Vision test?
  11. Do you know what colleges/universities she might consider? Some have very specific science requirements and others do not. My oldest (majoring in Public Relations Event Management) did Conceptual Physics her senior year. If I recall, it only required Algebra 2 (and not a lot of that). It was a very good text and we enjoyed it. My youngest (majoring in Math and Mechanical/Energy Engineering) did a much different physics program in high school Physics is such a foundational science that I did not consider skipping it. Both also had biology and chemisty and a science of their choosing (oldest did equine science, youngest genetics)
  12. I worried about this too. Did I prepare them enough? Was my content rigorous enough? Did I cover everything I needed to cover to set them up well for college? Now that both are in college, I can honestly say "YES!" Both dc are Phi Theta Kappa. Both are members of various honors societies. Both have received some level of scholarship. Both were accepted to their first choice universities. Oldest will graduate this May. She was well prepared for her core classes. One day last year (her junior year at university) she called me laughing. One of her classes was covering editing. I required Editor in Chief as part of my english program. She was the only one in the class that had ever done that type of editing. She was laughing because she hated editing in high school but she said that section of the class was very easy for her thanks to high school preparation. Do your due diligence. Plan out a solid high school college prep program: 4 english/literature, 4 math, 4 science, 4 social studies, 1 gov, 1 econ, 1 fine arts, 2 foreign language, 1 or 2 PE (depending on state requirements), 1 health, about 10 electives. Teach them how to learn: how to research, how to take notes, how to plan and prioritize work. Instill a love of learning and curiosity in general.
  13. Take a look at this book over at Rainbow Resource: https://www.rainbowresource.com/product/066785/Leveled-Text-Dependent-Question-Stems---Mathematics-Problem-Solving.html?
  14. Analytical Grammar has a program, Beyond the Book Report.
  15. Have you looked at The Power is in Your Hands by Sharon Watson?
  16. I've got the worse dry skin. My legs are especially dry as are feet and forarms. A little background....I'm almost 60 with ckd (which I'm told can affect dry skin). We have had a fairly mild winter this year. Very few days were what I'd call "cold." Spring is coming and with that, swim season will be starting. I'd like to get my skin in better hydration now. What works???
  17. Pilates tomorrow morning!! I've lost 7 lbs so far. Occasionally I've lost 8 lbs 🙂 the scale dips down, then back up. But, that is okay. It is moving in the right directions. Total makeover in meal planning diet/nutrition the end of January. It took a lot of adjustment and still is difficult more often than I would like. But, I'm hoping i'm healthier over all. Walking a few times a week. Still more pain than I'd like. Hoping to lose 5 lb more before May. I'd be very content with 5 more (and so would my doctors) but no one would complain if it was more like 7 or 8 lbs
  18. I looked at bento box but I want it to keep cold things cold and hot things hot.
  19. Since being put on a special diet, I've been having a hard time with meals out or changes in schedule that make dashing home for lunch impossible. I always pack a snack in case I run late somewhere or an appt or meeting is scheduled close to snack or meal time. Oldest dd will graduate college this spring. The graduation starts at 10 in the morning. There is no reception, but I know we will need lunch. Her college is 2 hours away. I'll need to pack something. There are a few other things coming up too that means I'll need more than snacks. I need something that will keep cold foods cold. I'm not as concerned about hot foods hot, but that might be a nice thing. I need to pack multiple things: protein, carb, veggie. It can't be too bulky. I have a cooler and can use that, but I'd still need containers. Is there a good quality stackable lunch "box" or some such that fits this description?
  20. I have narrow feet that tend to be more on the flat side than a "normal" arch. The Vionics seem to be too wide or too high for me. My foot swims in most of them and the arch hits in the wrong place. And yes, metarsalgia is a factor too. Birks are way to hard for me. I can get away with Chacos in the summer. But, I want a nicer, dressier looking closed toe option
  21. I need a pair of flats to wear with slacks for office type environment. But, I have back, hip, and foot issues. Heels are right out. I won't need to walk much: parking lot to building and office to bathroom type walking. Vionics hurt. I'm off sizes with dansko (I'm a half size). Any other ideas?
  22. an IRL friend's son is in the army stationed across the country from his home. His family has asked relatives and friends to send cards and care packages. I sent him a box of poptarts, popcorn, jerky, and girl scout cookies this week. What are some other ideas? He is living in barracks here in the states so not worried about overseas shipping.
  23. My vision with multifocal is actually better than with my glasses. My doctor told me I am one of the lucky ones who has exceptional vision with mulitfocal. There are lots of options out there...one multifocal, one not, mini mono, regular mono, etc. I have multifocal mini mono and it works. I can't have reading glasses on top of multifocal because one eye is corrected for distance and the other is corrected for near. Reading glasses would be really wonky with that. The only time I could wear reading glasses was years ago when I still had single vision contacts
  24. I'm talking about mattress topper. It is several inches thick memory foam and quite bulkiy
  25. I posted on the chat board, but I'd thought I'd ask here. Dd will have the same size bedding next year as she does this year. So we will be transporting her topper home, storing it over the summer, and transporting it back in the fall. How do I do that??? The original box is no longer an option.
