  2. Placed an order with WP last Friday (6/11). It arrived today. :hurray: Let me clarify, I only order WP exclusives from them and get the other books necessary for their themed programs through Amazon. Mainly because I usually own half of them already and the remainder are cheaper with Amazon's 4 for 3 deal. Nevertheless.....that is amazing for WP. Only one item was not with my order (an Early American trades and crafts kit), but I was told that shipped out yesterday. I even got a tracking number. :D So, I think moving to a more central location has been a definite plus for WP!! Diane W. married for 22 years homeschooling 3 kiddos for 16 years
  3. Got it last week and already read it cover to cover. I need someone to come and "tie me to the mast" about this time every year. Darn Rainbow Resource catalog. :glare: Diane W. married for 22 years homeschooling 3 kiddos for 16 years
  4. I think I mentioned that to you, because I saw it all the time as a nurse in the peds practice I worked in, and because my own dd has it. It is painful for them, but it absolutely is not serious, and there is nothing you can do for it. If your dd can take a deep breath during the pain, it can sometimes "pop" and it will go away. The ped I worked for seemed to think it was more of a pinched nerve thing that eventually goes away on its own. Unfortunately, it can last until the mid-twenties. Most kids just learn to deal with it. My own dd's comes and goes. Sometimes it's really bothersome and other times she hardly notices it. If your own ped has done a chest x-ray and your dd doesn't have a murmur or anything else (like a history of heart trouble), I'm sure he's very confident in the diagnosis. The ped I worked for diagnosed it all the time by symptoms only, because it is so obvious and consistent in its presentation. Hope that helps. 6. If you pay them an extra $10 for "expedited warehouse handling", they will ship whatever is available from your order within 24 hours. I always do it....it's worth it to me; especially if I have a large order. Diane W. married for 22 years homeschooling 3 kiddos for 16 years
  7. I second the duct tape. In the peds practice I worked in.....it cured warts just as well, or even better, than the traditional meds. Good luck! Diane W. married for 22 years homeschooling 3 kiddos for 16 years
  8. As the mom of a ballet dancer and a ped nurse, I have ample experience with foot injuries. Unfortunately. :glare: A nasty bruise can last for more than six weeks, so I wouldn't be overly concerned just yet, and I wouldn't push for an MRI. My dd has had more foot injuries than I can count and has never undergone an MRI for any of them. Even when a stress fracture was suspected, the orthopedist suggested just waiting.....turned out he was right. Inflamed tendon, not a stress fracture. In fact, as a pp said, soft tissue injuries are the worst and much more painful than an actual fracture. Just continue to treat the symptoms for now. If you feel a consultation with an orthopedic surgeon is necessary, then I would pursue it, but I'm not sure how much differently he would treat the injury. Of course, I've haven't seen your son's injury in person, so this is all speculation, but from your description and the other doctor's recommendations.....I would give it more time. 9. I agree with all the pp on their food choices. The '60s were kind of a culinary nightmare! If you want something fun to read about '60s food choices, you HAVE to check out anything James Lileks writes on the subject. My family and I literally laugh until we cry over his books on mid-century American food. What were we THINKING??? Here's a link to one of his funniest on Amazon. It might be a fun door prize for your themed party. http://www.amazon.com/Gallery-Regrettable-Food-James-Lileks/dp/0609607820/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1276630538&sr=8-3
  10. And when you spread your new curriculum on the living room floor and start rolling around in it......they will send you to get medical attention. Diane W. married for 22 years homeschooling 3 kiddos for 16 years
  11. Once a Month cooking is a bit more than just freezing your regular dinner and microwaving it later. I never use my microwave to cook mine. When I do OAMC, I usually prepare 3 or 4 meals in the crockpots, 3 or 4 in the oven, 5 or 6 on the stovetop and the bulk of the remaining are "assembly" meals, meaning they are assembled, frozen, then cooked on the day we want to eat them. Here is a search list on Amazon for cookbooks that specialize in this type of cooking. Honestly, it is one of the best things I've ever done for my family. It saves me time and money, not to mention we eat much healthier meals. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_10?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=once+a+month+cooking&sprefix=once+a+mon Diane W. married 22 years homeschooling 3 kiddos for 16 years
  12. Another tip for saving room: When you are freezing casseroles, line the pan with aluminum foil first...enough to spill over the pan edges. Then freeze the casserole. When it's frozen, pop it out of pan and keep it frozen only in the aluminum foil. Wrap it again with the freezer foil, label it and store. When you're ready to cook it, remove the foil, plop the frozen casserole brick back into the pan, and heat it in the oven. Diane W. married 22 years homeschooling 3 kiddos for 16 years
  13. Clearly it hasn't made its way to Utah yet. LOL Maybe tomorrow! Diane W. married for 22 years homeschooling 3 kiddos for 16 years
  14. I do the "flattened zip lock bag" thing and it works like a charm. It's like file folders full of food (wow, check out the unintentional alliteration ). Anyway, you just stack them one on top of the other and it works great. You won't fit much else in the freezer for the first week or so, but other than that, I love it! 15. I ALWAYS paint mine!! Nothing makes me happier than bright, happy toes. Bright pink happy toes at the moment. :D Diane W. married 22 years homeschooling 3 kiddos for 16 years
  16. To me Sonlight is just a lot of reading (albeit good reading), but it bored my kids to tears. And, bogged us down. We love the hands-on projects that come with WP and all the little extras. So, I guess it depends on what you enjoy and what your children enjoy. You'll find pros and cons on both sides of the curriculum aisle. 17. Excellent series!! We all watched it, even my 8 year old. He just turned his head at the graphic parts. The stories of the families were very engaging and really personalized the history. Really well done...I recommend it wholeheartedly. Diane W. married for 22 years homeschooling 3 kiddos for 16 years
  18. Claritin and Flonase combined should do the trick for your son. I honestly wouldn't worry about any growth issues with Flonase since it is an inhaled steroid and stays primarily in the nasal passages. It will take at least a week for the Flonase to show results. One side effect we did see when I worked in a peds practice from Flonase was nose bleeds. If your son is prone to them, he may get a few after being on the Flonase for a bit. Other than that....it is a miracle for people with sinus problems. We all use it in my family and the results are amazing. Claritin is a very safe, non-drowsy antihistamine and will also help with the sinus issues. Be consistent with the dosage though. And, like I said with the Flonase....wait for about a week or two to evaluate its effectiveness. If your son can tolerate it....a Neti pot is also great for sinus issues. Use the Neti pot, blow the nose and then administer the Flonase. It will actually help it to work better if the nasal passages are free of "guck". Good luck! 19. I had 4 miscarriages in a row between my 2nd and 3rd child, and the last miscarriage was twins to top it all off. It was very hard to deal with everyone around me having babies and me not being able to stay pregnant. The clincher was when my SIL got pregnant and said, "Well, I guess you're not the one in the family who's supposed to have a baby this year." :001_huh: Oddly enough, she miscarried 10 weeks later and I went on to become pregnant and DID give birth that year to a sweet baby boy. I found that the best answer for me was to stay positive and count my blessings. I was fortunate enough to have two healthy, happy children while others couldn't have any at all. That helped me to appreciate what I had while I continued to hope and pray for another blessing in our family.....and he took 7 years to get here after my first miscarriage. And, he's still teaching me patience today. :glare: Diane W. married for 22 years homeschooling 3 kiddos for 16 years
  20. :iagree: Winterpromise and TT make a GREAT combination. Fun, engaging, and my kiddos retain the info as well. Diane W. married for 22 years homeschooling 3 kiddos for 16 years
  21. The rash generally doesn't appear until the fever has broken or is about to break, so I would say you're ok to bring your child out in public. Spring is the biggest time of year for roseola, so if your child caught it, it's probably everywhere. Luckily, aside from the fever, it's a very mild illness, and most kids don't even seem that bothered by the fever. And, as a ped nurse, I saw kids coming in with roseola where the temp was 105 and the kiddos were still happy and playing. In fact, that was one of our clues as to the nature of the child's illness. Here's another useless fact for you: Roseola is actually the herpes 6 virus, just as chickenpox is a herpes virus, which is why you get the rash. 22. Haven't used that one, but we're using Royals & Revolution this year with my dd and we love it! Diane W. married for 22 years homeschooling 3 kiddos for 16 years
  23. I love to date my husband, but sometimes it's hard to fit it in with a busy family. So, I try to be really creative and come up with fun date nights at home. Two of my favorite sites are both written by fun girls from my area and they are PACKED with great dating ideas. Some for out of the house dates and some for at home dates. Just scroll through and click and you'll get some super ideas for dates you can do at your house without spending a lot of money. http://thedahlingdatingdivas.blogspot.com/ Here is another site with a great post on keeping the spark in your marriage from a cute couple who have some struggles in their life (2 of their 4 children have cystic fibrosis), but still have an amazing attitude and an amazing marriage. http://www.howdoesshe.com/keep-the-spark-hot Diane W. married for 22 years homeschooling 3 kiddos for 16 years
