  1. Pesto is a staple in our house, and we usually grow our own basil for it, as basil is easy to grow and tolerates heat like a champ. When we don't have enough home grown basil, we get it from Trader Joe's (they have large packages of organic and non-organic basil). You can use almost any kind of nuts -- our usual recipe is based on pistachios, and then I usually add some combination of pine nuts and cashews or a bit of cashew butter for creaminess. Use a good quality of olive oil and be careful not to overblend the garlic and olive oil, as they can become bitter. There are a ton of recipes out there, but after a while you can just wing it! Pesto freezes well, just allow enough time to defrost it slowly.
  2. "Hold On" by Sarah MacLachlan "Wicked Game" by Chris Isaak "Joey" by Concrete Blonde "Brick" by Ben Folds Five (Warning, very depressing) "Only You" by Yaz "Far, Far Away from My Heart" and "I'm in Trouble Again" by The BoDeans "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman
  3. She looks like a Daisy. Or Sophie, Ruby, Roxy, Kiki.
  4. 5. Has he tried a salicylic acid product like Dermarest Psoriasis shampoo?
  6. Flagstaff is a few hours (2 1/2 to 3) away from metro Phoenix and has some really nice weather right now for hiking. it would make for a long day, though, with lots of driving.
  7. You could cover a piece of cardboard (or something similar and heat tolerant) on all sides with aluminum foil. The floor protector I have is a molded tray made of some sort of semi-rigid foam. I just leave my steamer sitting on tile, too.
  8. We have silicone ones that that I have had for over a year and are holding up perfectly, BUT silicone has a tendency to hold odors and they can get smelly after a while. I bake them a few times a year at 350 for a couple of hours to get rid of smells (after cleaning them thoroughly). This helps a lot.
  9. I would contact Vitamix first and ask about your current blender's problem. When I had a jar base deteriorate they sent me a replacement quickly, no charge. They might have a solution for you.
  10. I have heard that changing the sheets and pillowcases daily is helpful. That's a lot of laundry, but maybe change out pillowcases daily and wash sheets frequently.
  11. I'm trying some new tomato varieties this year and have been really pleased with their growth, but don't have ripe tomatoes from any except a couple of cherries. I've got Maglia Rosa, Power Pops and Hungarian Heart that should ripen soon. I do have some over wintered Cherokee Purples (my favorite!) that are ready to eat -- I love these and grow them every year, but they don't produce that many tomatoes per bush. Not so patiently waiting on eggplants and pomegranates. They look like they are gong to take a while. Large and small peppers are ripening now. Basil, parsley, mint, and thyme are ready to use. My grape vine doesn't look like it's producing this year -- it was hacked back for a fence repair and has not recovered. Figs before too long, but the bird end up getting most of them. Oranges are done for the year, but lemons and limes are coming up this summer. I'm also growing sprouts indoors this year, and that has been rewarding! We've been putting them on sandwiches as soon as they are big enough. Supposedly they are nutritional powerhouses, and they are very easy to grow.
  12. I bought several from Etsy weeks ago and they still haven't arrived, so if you buy from there be careful about the timing. Mine are coming from overseas and I wish I had stuck with domestic. I like that there are reviews available, to give a bit of peace of mind on the seller.
  13. Some cats really are "different". Yours isn't the only barker:
  14. For vegan recipes using beans, my family likes these: Classic minestrone https://cookieandkate.com/classic-minestrone-soup-recipe/ (just leave off the optional parmesan, or use a vegan version) Sweet potato and black bean tacos https://buildyourbite.com/sweet-potato-tacos/ Potato, white bean and kale vegan soup https://www.tasteslovely.com/potato-white-bean-kale-vegan-soup/ (I usually don't make the crostini)
  15. It sounds like you have a pretty good handle on her circumstances then. If she won't eat the renal diets, just use a good quality canned food and maybe add a bit of extra water to it. Unless she is one of those stubborn cats that won't eat canned food ... There are safe pain relievers for cats, but they aren't over the counter. And with her compromised kidney function, they should be carefully chosen and dosed. I hope you are able to get her feeling more comfortable soon.
  16. Don't give any over the counter painkillers, they can be toxic to cats. I agree to check for any wounds or tender spots that might give a clue as to why the leg is sore. There are some treatable possibilities as to why your kitty is losing weight. Hyperthyroidism is very common and can be successfully treated. Renal failure is even more common, and less responsive to treatment, but there are still some things you can do to extend her quality of life. There are other possibilities as well of course (Diabetes, cancer, IBD, etc) -- a good exam and bloodwork would go a long ways towards sorting it out. Good luck!
  17. You might want to contact some reputable breeders and ask them. Sometimes they will have kept a puppy and changed their mind about breeding it, or they may have adult animals they have decided to rehome for various reasons. Even if they don't have a suitable dog, they may know someone who does.
  18. Bones White Collar Suits Veronica Mars I intend to try Leverage and The Mentalist soon, as I've heard them recommended.
  19. Not difficult if you have the right size. There is a fair amount of handling the toes to get them on though, so a foot phobic dog may be a challenge.
  20. Actually, I just tried it a few weeks ago, and was underwhelmed. It didn't go on well, didn't stick well and didn't help. It might have been the formulation that I chose (it was warm weather wax and was very firm). My old dog is now wearing Dr. Buzby's toegrips and I think they are helping a bit, but my dog also has neurological issues and is nearly 16, so she struggles even on carpeted areas. The toe grips are like Soft Paws with the tips cut off, which would be a lot cheaper so I may try that when this set wear out.
  21. The saline spray helps clear out the nasal passages and rinse out allergens. I imagine the effects are similar to a neti pot, but much more user friendly and confined to the nasal passages, not the sinuses..
  22. Do you know if he is a candidate for sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT)? It would be more convenient than injections. Mucinex (maximum strength only, not standard dosing) helps with sinus pressure for me. Using saline spray, like Simply Saline, once or twice daily is also helpful. It's easy to do in the shower.
  23. my favorite pillow is filled with millet. You can add and subtract filling and smoosh it around to provide the right amount of support wherever you need it. Buckwheat is similar. There are also pillows that have wool on one side and millet on the other.
  24. There are still plenty of tumbleweeds! I have a photo on my phone of them blowing past my car while I waited in a school pickup line. I've had to drive around them plenty of times on the road, and pull seedlings from my front yard. And I live in the suburbs, not very rural at all.
