  1. Good thought, Calming Tea! Thanks for the idea. This is actually exactly what she did last year, however, the videos did not have subtitles, so she was dependent upon a hearing/ signing friend to explain it to her. I guess it wasn't working well. I haven't used it, myself, so I am not sure how much she was missing by not being able to hear the videos.
  2. I have several homeschooling friends who are deaf. One of them is schooling 6 kids grade 5 and under. She communicates with her children using ASL, and is not strong in the English language. However, all of her children are hearing, and she would like to teach them to write well in English, though she does not write well, herself. She is currently trying Shurley English and looking for additional resources to help her teach writing. Anyone have any ideas? Perhaps some resources for teaching English as a second language would help?
  3. My cycles have gotten heavier with each child, but this is the heaviest I've ever seen. This is my second cycle after my fifth child (still brst. feeding) and I had to wake myself up every hour or two last night to go to the bathroom. I've been soaking a regular tampax every hour. Do I need to call the doctor?
  4. I am in desparate need of some new modest, loose fitting tops and skirts. I do not sew! It is particularly hard for me to find clothes that fit me since I am only 5'3" and 105 pounds. I am open to on-line shopping since I hardly ever have time to get out! Any suggestions?
  5. My ds (almost)6 is struggling with learning to read. He isn't behind by any means, but he is doing a lot of guessing at words, and is often wrong. We have used OPGTR and ETC, and the MCP readers, and he knows the phonics rules pretty well. He knows many of the long-vowel digraphs and the silent-e rule. He can tell you all the short vowel sounds that each letter makes, and each of the long vowel sounds. If I ask him if a word has a short or long vowel sound, he usually knows. But when it comes to reading sentences, he just starts guessing at the vowel sounds in many words. It is very frustrating to him, and he hates to read. As a side note, I also struggled with reading as a child, as did my mother. I was not homeschooled, but was taught to read in a school where I had to read out-loud in a group:001_huh: and then had to complete those awful timed reading comprehention tests. Speed reading was highly valued and I was only taught a little bit of phonics. All this added up to me learning to guess at words and I was often wrong, like my son! I don't want him to grow up being as frustrated with reading as I was. His twin sister is reading amazingly well, and she just seems to read intuitively. She reads well beyond her grade level and beyond what I have taught her so far in the OPGTR. I have always taught them separately, but I know that it is a struggle for my son that his sister reads better than he does. Do any of you have any suggestions for making reading easier for him, and to help him gain confidence? Thanks for your help!
  6. Discovery any better? I purchased this book for my six year old, and I was hoping for more Scripture study, less fluff. Jessica
  7. I realize that each child is different and will progress in different areas at different rates, but I would like a guide to keep in mind. Right now I am particularly interested in reading levels, but in time that may expand to other areas as well. Thanks for the helps! Jessica
  8. Any suggestions? I guess I should add that she will be reading these herself.
  9. Our fifth child was born to us this Spring, 15 weeks prematurely. She spent three months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and has finally come home. She requires a lot of attention right now, and I do have a lot of help at home for the next few weeks. However, my oldest children are just about to start Kindergarden (five year old twins) and I also have an (almost) four-year-old and a just now two-year-old. I was planning to plan for homeschooling this Spring... but God's plans were different. We are definitely going ahead with the homeschooling, but I need help with the planning! I used OPGTR last year with my twins and I plan to continue with it. I also tried Saxon K, and didn't care for it much. I have thought about Singapore Math, but haven't gotten to see it yet. We have a great Kids Bible we will continue to use with the coloring book pages from Calvary. This needs to be a pretty simple year considering all I have on my plate. (It is hard for me to accept this, because I have a tendency to be more of the "do everything you can the hardest way possible" kind of person.) What else, if anything do I really need for Kindergarden? Any suggestions on organizing/scheduling or making my life more simple would be appreciated. If you would like to see pics of Baby Katie and her story, please see: lammers-meis.blogspot.com Thanks, Jessica
  10. I'm just beginning this homeschool journey with my (soon to be) five dc. The ages of mine are: 5, 5, 3, 1, and baby due in June 2008. As of today I am feeling pretty overwhelmed, but am realizing that I need to grow in my faith, trust Him, and be praying regularly for my dc. I am also needing all the help and suggestions I can get from moms who have had lots of young children with no older ones to help!
