I've been attending an Episcopal Church for a few months now, and that's exactly what I've gotten. Good luck to him.

We did this exact thing last year (except our destination was Switzerland). Grandma and Grandpa took the kids (12, 10, and 8) on a road trip to a bunch of historical sites, so they had as many "Guess what we saw!" stories to share as we did when we got back.

Ditto. It makes me think of the "First they came for the..." poem. The often touted anti-immigration slogan of "They're taking American jobs!" can be applied to him, even though his job supports 4 American citizens. The utter lack of compassion America as an institution seems to be showing these people who came here to escape hellish situations (some of OUR OWN MAKING) is baffling to me.

Minnesota here, and yup, we've got snow. Not snowman-building snow, but it's been great for sledding. :)

Ya, I'm a devout Christian, will be attending Midnight Mass (earlier in the evening. ;) ) and will feel no guilt laughing at Life of Brian. :)

Oooh, I do this too! And before we moved into our current place, where the spot for our tree and the spot for our TV are in different rooms, I used to do Yoga by the light of the Christmas tree (and the TV, because I cannot self-guide myself through a Vinyasa! lol)

There are lots of family traditions surrounding the holidays, but is there anything you do just for yourself during the holidays? Mine is to stuff the kids' stockings Christmas Eve while watching a Christmas Special that is as not-meant-for-kids as I can find. Jeff Dunham's Very Special Christmas Special, Black Adder Christmas, etc. This year I'm stretching a bit and watching Life of Brian. (You see a bit of the Christmas story in the very beginning, so I'm letting it count. :001_tt2: ) Any other just-for-you traditions out there? :)

Church Coffee Hour Question - WWYD *update in post 1*
Xuzi replied to AmandaVT's topic in The Chat Board
I'd probably just bring something that I wouldn't mind taking back home with me if it ended up not being needed. Or have someone in mind who might like a surprise visit and a plate of treats after church. -
A cheesy keepsake ornament my DH bought for our very first Christmas together. He's not a naturally sentimental guy, so I was surprised he even thought to buy something like that. It's the very last ornament we put on our tree, at the very top just below the star, and we put it up together. :)

The podcast Oh No Ross and Carrie is doing a multi-episode investigation into Flat Earthers. They attended meet-ups and conferences to see and hear what these people are talking about. Episode 4 just came out today. It's been fascinating.

Or have their seasons at different times of the year.

I don't get the purpose of the conspiracy. Why go to so much trouble to convince people the earth is round if it isn't? Who's gaining what from that?

Real, multi-colored lights, multi-colored star topper, mish-mash of ornaments and garlands that we've picked up over the years. Some of the ornaments are sentimental and meaningful, some just fun and whimsical, like the silver sparkly hedgehog I got last year.

By blaming the women who "allowed" the assaults to happen and saying they shouldn't have gone along with it, we're allowing these sexual predators to be the gate keepers of women's dreams. Want to be an actress? You have to sleep with this man. You want to be an Olympic gymnast? You have to let this doctor fondle you. You want to make it to the top of the business world? You have to suck off a few guys. If the women don't go along with it, achieving their dreams (and reaching positions of power themselves) becomes SO much harder, and the men just keep on holding the power. If we instead LISTENED to these women, and punished THE PEOPLE WHO INSISTED ON SEX IN EXCHANGE FOR A PERSON BEING ALLOWED TO ACHIEVE THEIR DREAM we'd get a lot further at changing things for the better.

Would a Roku or Fire Stick or something similar allow us to watch the Macy's parade? We just need the regular broadcast station, right? Not cable? (Signed - she who has not had broadcast or cable TV in years)

I don't know if its just the lighting, but your eyes seem to "pop" more, too. You look great! Welcome to the pixie cut club. :)

I've been voting since 2000, and this last election is the first time I've ended up not voting for the presidential candidate who won.

All the different colors of ribbons people wear or stick to their cars don't do anything to cure cancer or prevent suicide or treat diabetes either, but they do draw attention to the issues they're representing. People won't put time and energy into solving a problem they're unaware exists, or don't see as being *that* big of a problem. Raising awareness, triggering conversations (which this protest has very effectively done) can recruit more people to the cause, because more people will be aware of it, and some portion of those people will start to take action.

Where did the idea that the *national* anthem was only to honor our military? We need a new anthem, if that's the case. America seems to have this borderline cult mindset about our military. We must always honor them, thank them, never criticize the things they're doing, or point out that some of it isn't actually defending America's freedom (Iraq?!) unless you want to deal with serious social repercussions. Military is sacred. Military First.

I think you'd have to be living under a rock to not know that putting an end to police brutality, and improving our skewed justice system is at the root of a lot of the protests going on right now. Ferguson. St. Louis. Kaep's initial kneeling protest over a year ago... it's been on magazine covers and on headline news and talk radio... I think some people would just rather be obtuse than take a long hard look at our society.

Would you find it easy to speak calmly about your loved ones lives being constantly on the line because of who they are? Speaking generally, I think people's refusal to take seriously someone's anguished protests until they can express it nicely plays into keeping things as they are. They are being shot in their cars in front of their children, on their front porches when they called the police for help, they're strangled for the crime of re-selling cigarettes. And never seeing justice. I'd have a hard time expressing my frustration and pain in a socially acceptable way. (Which has yet to be defined, anyway)

Depends on what part of Wisconsin her family is in. If your family is in western Wisconsin Minnesota might be a place to consider. We're south of St. Paul and recently bought a 4bed/2bath home for <250k. Not new construction, but good condition in a nice neighborhood, close to shopping and a nice park and walking trails. Many Minnesota towns have lots and lots of walking trails! Less than 30 minutes from the airport, and just over an hour from Rochester and Mayo Clinic. And yes, there's snow. :) ETA: Amtrak does pass through the Twin Cities. Homeschooling is letting your neighborhood school know you're homeschooling, and do standardized testing in certain subjects during certain grades. I spent 11 years in SW Washington. Snow was usually a once-a-year event, and practically everything shut down if it was more than a few inches because the cities don't keep plows.
