  1. I really don't know anything about midi connections, but........I have been using noteflight for my piano students to compose with. It is free, online, and user-friendly. I'm not sure if you can connect with midi or not, though. If you are going to do it as a class, it would be nice if he could manually notate some of his pieces at least. It is a completely different skill to be able to analyze what you are doing and get it on paper. www.noteflight.com
  2. I would probably at this point just try to figure out for sure what to do when your youngest turns 18 so that you won't have to go through this again. At that point, it will be a large chunk of money. I am going to make note of this so that I will start early when my daughter is going to turn 18 (halfway through her senior year). She is an only and will really need that money. Our local SS office never has a line, so in my case, that would probably be the easiest route. It would be great if homeschoolers could get survivor's benefits extended until your child graduates. It is going to be difficult to homeschool and work. Not looking forward to that at all.
  3. I have never heard of "check by phone". I would absolutely not do business with a bank that has so little security.
  4. What about using Latin Alive I over 2 years for 6th-7th, then moving to the second book in 8th? They have dvds that will help you teach it. You could use Latin for Children and then switch to Latin Alive, but I think starting slowly would work better.
  5. I was actually online yesterday looking at marine biology textbooks, but there are not a ton of choices out there. What she really wants to do is study botany or horticulture, but I would probably have to go with some kind of introductory college textbook for that. Unless you have some ideas along those lines?
  6. I had planned to use Wilson Hill for science. Wilson Hill has moved biology to 11th grade to really beef up the course. They do physics I in 9th. Because my dd used BJU physical science which is really an intro to physics and chemistry in 8th, she has already covered the conceptual physics I information according to the instructor. I'm really not interested in repeating the same course for 2 years. BJU physical is not like apologia. There is no earth science included because it is a high school course intended for 9th grade. The next class in the sequence is chemistry, which I don't really want to begin in 9th. She is really planning to stay somewhere in state for college, so admission is really not going to be a problem.
  7. I don't really think it is worth an extra half credit, but I will probably wait and see next year. With dropping some of the books, GC2 hasn't really been that much of a work load, but I know that Wilson Hill awards the 2.5. It could be that it ramps up in 9th grade. I may end up counting this year's science (BJU physical) as high school science since it is a high school course. That way, I could skip science next year and do an elective. I feel like I am kind of loading her down with humanities courses when she is going to major in some kind of science field. Not sure what I would add, though. I just have no idea how to proceed with science because I don't want to move to chemistry yet.
  8. We were in CC for foundations but not challenge. It is really a way to connect you to a group of people. Because it is really a memory work program, the curriculum that you use is entirely up to you. No one is dictating any of that to you whatsoever in the foundations program. I didn't alter my curriculum choices whatsoever.
  9. I don't think you are missing anything. My daughter is signed up for GC3 as well. I am trying to keep it at 6 credits. GC3 1 credit for history and 1 for english/lit ( I will probably assign some additional writing assignments to go along) Logic I @ WH--1 credit Latin 2--1 credit Some kind of science--1 credit (was supposed to be bio @ WH, but they've switched things around and put me in a bind) Either Geometry or Alg 2 if I use Saxon--1 credit I think that's it, but I'm considering adding a geography elective depending on what I do about science. I'm thinking 7 credits may be too much.
  10. I know I have seen Barron's AP Study Guides at Barnes and Noble. I would probably start with that and a college textbook.
  11. The problem is that it is not the class instructor that is having the problem. The problem is with the writing "tutor" for the class, if that is what you want to call her. She just pops in briefly every other week, gives an assignment, talks about expectation, and pops back out. She is the one grading the discussion papers and is behind. The OP is not really naming names because she is trying to be fair to the actual instructor, who is amazing, and probably had no input on who the writing person was going to be for his class. It's just a situation where you can't really bash the whole class because I don't think the instructor has any influence over the writing instructor at all, so his hands are tied.

  13. I think I know who you are talking about from the description. These writing assignments are not really graded for writing. They are mostly graded for completion and go toward a discussion grade. I always pull up the teaching notes and make sure my daughter follows the instructions fully. She has nearly always gotten full credit. Because I paid for a literature/history class, not a writing class, I'm not as worried. As far as I am concerned, adding the writing instruction was just an extra that they added to help them with these discussion paragraphs. I don't think writing instruction was originally part of the class. At least, it is not in the course description. I just consider it added value. Without it, we would have no clue how to structure these papers. Nearly every paper is set up the same, so with feedback from one, you should be able to figure out what they are looking for. It might also help to read through the discussion boards to get an idea of what everyone else is writing.
  14. Most of the research is for the science track, I believe. They use Apologia's middle school science texts for 8th-9th, which is another reason I was hesitant. You can't give high school credit for a middle school physical science text. It is especially not a good idea for a strong science student. The students still need real instruction in Latin, writing, and math. Once a week is not going to cut it for most students. The parents really need to be more involved here because, they are right, they are the teachers for 4 days a week. It's kind of like, the students are given assignments and the parents scramble around during the week trying to figure out how to complete them correctly. Or, at least, that is what I was hearing. The accountability is good, though, if that is what people are looking for.
  15. They really have us right where they want us. We are now getting the same shipping speed that we used to get for free shipping with orders over $25, but now we are paying a large fee for it. If you order with out prime, it takes a week, so your only option is to pay for prime. Now you have to spend $50 for the free shipping that takes a week.
  16. My daughter has enjoyed reading Lacey's Great Tales in English History this year with her Great Conversations class (8th grade) at Wilson Hill. The stories are short and entertaining. You can probably find samples of the text at amazon. I seem to remember that Sonlight has/used to have a year of British Literature. You might check that out for ideas as well.
  17. I borrowed a Challenge A guide when my dd was finishing 6th grade. It is basically a schedule with catechism questions in the back. The one page you saw was pretty much all there is to it.....just more weeks. Needless to say, we didn't continue. No class discipline, sketchy teachers, and no real guide to follow for the parent. It would have been a total wasted day for my dd. Then I would have been unable to follow up and help because there is no guide, just a schedule to tell you what to do next.
  18. It actually looks like VP has a combined omnibus class like Wilson Hill beginning next year. I would still go with Wilson Hill, though. Our experience has been awesome!
  19. I guess my concern is that these Physics 1 classes are really just physical science, which my dd is taking in 8th. I'm wondering if colleges are really accepting these credits as "Physics".
  20. I talked to the biology teacher last summer. She stated that the classes would be taught from a "Christian world view." I got the impression that she was a young earth creationist, but she didn't state that emphatically. She did say that Wilson Hill endeavors to respect a parent's teaching in this area and that there were usually a mix of beliefs in her classes. She also said that everything would be discussed respectfully. I'm not sure how all this would play out in the actual class, but I think if you called or emailed her, she would answer your questions.
  21. Penelope, have you seen a new syllabus for this WH Physics class? I'm just wondering if they are still using the same book because it looks like Physics 1 is primarily Physics while the honors track includes some chemistry. Last I checked the book wasn't listed this year.
  22. I had emailed her, too, and she recommended the same for my daughter. I'm just not feeling chemistry for 9th grade, though. :( I'm just kind of wondering if the physics 1 instead of physical science is just a way to re-package to make it look better on a transcript, especially if it is using the same text. It's not just Wilson Hill. A lot of people are moving to physics early with an algebra-based curriculum.
  23. I am trying to plan (re-plan) my dd's science sequence for 9-12th. I have noticed a trend of scheduling Physics with an algebra based curriculum earlier in the sequence. I am wondering what the difference is between this type of Physics and a rigorous physical science class like BJU. Can someone enlighten me? For instance, Wilson Hill is scheduling Physics 1 as a 9th grade course, but state that it was formerly called Accelerated Studies in Physics and Chemistry, which, as I understood it, was a rigorous physical science class. So, my first question is if it would be worthwhile to follow BJU Physical (she is taking in 8th) with Physics 1 or would that be too much duplication? The second question is does Physics 1 really count as "real physics"? I am trying to figure out what science to schedule for 9th if I follow Wilson Hill's sequence (I really wanted to use them for science). 8th BJU physical 9th help 10th chemistry 11th biology 12th AP something, probably bio My dd loves life science, and is not happy about waiting until 11th for bio. The universities in my state recommend biology plus 3 sciences above that (whatever that means.) Thanks!!
  24. If you find out the answer, post it here. My dd is signed up for his GC3 class, but I have no idea how much writing will be involved. In GC2, she will end up with 2 750+ word essays and another 10 or so 250 word papers, mostly on themes and symbolism in literature. I have no idea how much writing is expected in a composition class.
