  1. Just to add, my son said, "Why do you read these FB posts? They just stress you out!" 🤪I told him knowledge is power and I would rather us not be blindsided by something like this down the road. It is the same for all the posts about how hard the pre-reqs are for the College of Business at his school. They really try to weed the kids out before they apply to the College of Business (it isn't competitive, but you need a certain GPA in 9 specific classes). I said I would rather know how to proceed, keep lists of tutors that are mentioned, etc. I would rather be proactive than reactive when we can. Ugh!!! I do know that maybe the people with the problems are the ones posting and we aren't hearing from all the others, but I would still rather know.
  2. So, at one of my boys' colleges, these 2 anonymous posts (see below) have been on the school's parent page in the last week. There are all kinds of comments about this being an issue with children attending other schools as well. I'm sure it is going to be a growing issue in the years to come. How accurate are AI detectors? Is there any recourse for students? How do they prove they didn't use it? I've shown my boys these posts and told them to keep all their notes, outlines, and all drafts for any of their papers they submit. I don't think either of my guys would ever do this, they have been told the potential consequences of getting caught, but who knows? Quoting inaccurately can be a problem? Some parents responded that even previous papers your child wrote (their own words) can be considered plagiarism on a different paper? For the first post, the TA refuses to go to the professor to even discuss it. For the second post, that professor is going to run the paper by several other professors to get their opinion. Like life and college aren't hard enough already in this crazy world 😞. And I am already so stressed out trying to figure all of this out with 2 kids at once -- LOL. Here are the posts: I need support. My child wrote a paper. The TA sent it through the AI device and it came back as identified that my child used AI, but my child didn't. My child doesn't even know how or what to use to do that. The TA said some inappropriate things to my child and now my child has to go before the Honor Code!! Help! AND My DD just called me. She met with one of her professors a short while ago after receiving an email request from the professor yesterday asking to meet. The professor informed her that her assignment/essay was “detected as being 80% AI written”. AI = not written by my daughter. I am not one to believe that my daughter is always right. However based on our phone call, and calls with her this week, I believe her. What is the use of “AI detection” and what retribution does an “accused student” have. She said her professor was very nice. And that the professor is going to share the essay with other professors and decide what happens next. My daughter is beside herself - and the research that I am doing - some this really bad phone call - does show the inaccuracies of the use of “AI detectors”. Thoughts? Anyone else with similar situation? What is the policy and is this a normal practice and is it common to “find and suggest/accuse a student of this?” And what happens next? Again - she is an adult - and will be handling this if there is an accusation - but this is not favorable and a horrible experience as a student and a parent.
  3. I just got DS1 a nice suit at Kohl's for prom and he is taking it to school next year. I like that you can get separates and different style of pants to go with the jacket. All he needs it to have the pants hemmed a little. DS2 is inheriting DS1's gray Docker's dress pants and I will get him a sport coat if/when he needs one. He already has a nice shirt, tie, and shoes. Like @easypeasy's guys wear, my guys have a nice black leather tennis shoes. They wear those so far as they have been appropriate enough.
  4. Lots of things, but mostly that both of my boys, my only babies, will be dropped off at college 4 months from now for the first time 😭.
  5. Coming back to this. The public school got back to me on Friday about digital vs. paper exams. They are offering digital exams, but not for Stats or Calculus. This is an AP Scholar high school and they proctor a lot of AP exams each year. I'm glad we are going to be done with this phase of life on May 8th 🎉🎉🎉!
  6. Writing was the bane of our existence with my twins (now heading off to college). I waited a year later than you, but I started mine in Lantern English in spring of 10th grade and went through 7 or 8 courses (including 1 quarter of British Lit) through 11th. Are they AP level writing courses? No. Mine were never, ever going to be interested in taking an AP Comp exam. But...it got the job done and they started doing really well with another teacher to be held accountable to for writing. They teach various writing classes by quarter (or for an entire year). We took quarter classes. They have a summer session, which we did, that starts June 11th. Maybe give that one a try.
  7. Gosh, I hope the electronic platform isn't starting this year for my guys - that would be a big surprise at this point -- LOL. I just emailed the liaison at the school to check.
  8. Mine are allowed to take them at their local public school. I need to contact the school in September to make sure they are added to the list for when they order tests, etc. Mine are free, but they are not for every county (the next county over charges homeschoolers to take them at their schools). I would check with your local public school first and then go from there.
  9. It is just the 4 of us here. We are doing monkey bread and egg soufflé in the morning 😊. YUM!!! Costco ham, mac n cheese, and ambrosia (deciding on veggie) for dinner. Little Nothing Bundt Cakes for dessert.
  10. I’m in my first year of one of the older categories. I am retiring from homeschooling in 2 months 😁. I do plan to continue hanging out in the high school and college forums for the next 4 years though.
  11. Your DH has been through a lot of trauma and chaos too. It would be nice if he had a place (man cave of that is what he wants) for now and maybe not have deal with another tenant in there for a bit. Time for you all to recover and heal some, which will be accomplished in different ways by each of you.
  12. Yes. DS1’s school has a super friendly vibe - about 20,000 students.
  13. A female teen shooter??? 😔
  14. If I was that friend, I wouldn't have come, etc. because I was dealing with too much of my own crap at that time (elder care, college stuff, homeschooling senior year, my own health issues, etc). And...I would have felt like I couldn't be the support I would have wanted to be with my own head barely staying above water. So I just wouldn't go, then time would go by, and it would be awkward for me to try and explain after the fact. Everyone is different and everyone has their own story. I certainly wouldn't ask her why she wasn't there for you.
  15. Quill, I don't have any experience with the Medicaid/financial and assisted living/nursing home piece of it so am no help there. I do get the resentment and anger though. 4.5 years with my dad (I'll be surprised if he is here another 6 months) and my in-laws both went quickly in 2021. DH is still cleaning out their house, but everything else with the estate has been completed. It is a lot! Just hang on for the ride. While you could just not get involved, I know that isn't really possible. I hear so many of us going through this elder care thing and it just makes me so sad. Big hugs!!!
  16. Are yiu able to tell me if the actual heating pad is covered in plastic (like the ones where can use steam) or fabric? I’m looking for a good fabric one.
  17. My DH’s old Samsung had this happen recently. Same issue and with Verizon.
  18. I've been hearing/reading about this since we toured William and Mary in August. They brought it up in their info session and says it makes colleges, including them, shake in their boots. Do you think there will be any impact to students graduating in 2027? Costs of schools going up even more? So many of the schools we toured were spending big money on renovations and new buildings/dorms, etc. Will some schools start closing that soon or will it take until 2030 to start seeing impacts? How about for advanced degrees if they go that route? Not trying to stir the pot. Just curious and I know many of you are probably more in the loop about this than I am. Both of mine are going to public universities (one bigger, one small). Will it be more private colleges affected or publics too? https://www.bestcolleges.com/news/analysis/looming-enrollment-cliff-poses-serious-threat-to-colleges/#:~:text=What Is the Enrollment Cliff, when most kids start college.
  19. Thank you! Mine refused to even apply to VA Tech for various reasons -- LOL -- and it is way to big for their tastes. Really, they both chose their schools in August when we were touring so it worked out as they wanted.
  20. DS1 and DS2 - both waitlisted at UVA. So...we are official. JMU for DS1 and UMW for DS2 🎉🎉🎉.
  21. I just went back through prom pics for my friend's kids from the last 2 years. Mostly in 2 piece suits so DS1 may be getting his suit after all. I haven't seen many tuxes here for prom. He can rent one if needed though.
  22. Thank you re: dress clothes. DS2 has 2 pair of dress pants (one of which DS1 grew out of), oxford shirt, tie, and shoes from in-laws funeral. So those can go and be there in case. DS1 has nice gray pants (like jeans, but nice fabric), oxford shirt, tie, shoes too. Both have several polos. We will be getting DS1 an outfit for prom (they don't wear tuxes anymore?) so hoping he can use those at school if needed. ETA: When we toured the college of business at JMU, our tour guide said they have a lot of events. It would be good to have a nice, professional outfit. I'm not going to stress about it for a freshman though. He can tell me if he needs anything different than what he has after he goes to a function.
  23. Thank you for this! I have so many worries with DS1 going to this school🤣! DS2 can navigate his whole campus in like 10-15 minutes! DH and I went to JMU a few weeks ago when it was beautiful out. We walked the entire campus - 16,000 steps and 4.4 miles (I think that is what my tracker said anyway). DH went there undergrad, but the whole east side wasn't there then. We are going to an accepted student event on the 31st. DS1 and I are going down a day early to walk the campus so he knows what he is getting into with dorm selection - especially in relation to class location. I'm going to have a map easily labeled with what classes are in which buildings so he can see how important it is to make sure there is enough time between classes to get to the next one or to eat lunch. Once in College of Business, he will spend most of his time in that building, but that is at least 2 years down the road. DS2 I worry about socially. DS1 I worry about everything else -- LOL.
  24. My DH didn’t have to pay anything for his. Maybe it depends on the amount of money one has in the bank.
  25. My DH had to do a lot of Medallion Signatures for his parent’s estate. It wasn’t too bad really. See where you can get one done and make an appt so you don’t have to wait.
