Ok, lol. I still feel completely in the dark about what he’ll be covering, though.

MATHCOUNTS is a really fun competition. It covers various math topics. He will send newsletters monthly to all members.

    Here are some topics:

    • Number Theory
    • Properties of Integers
    • Angles, Polygons, and Circles
    • Perimeter, Area, and Volume
    • Ratios and Proportions, Sequences and Series
    • Linear Equations and Functions
    • Quadratic Expressions and Equations
    • Coordinate Geometry
    • Counting
    • Probability and Statistics

Thanks! I was curious if he had specific math games or math topics in mind 🙂 . I've looked at Mathcounts a bit but not a ton -- I did math contests way back when, but I was older than the Mathcounts age.

He will review 50 math topics, which is important for MATHCOUNTS/AMC/Math Olympiad competitions. Math games include riddles, puzzles, Bingo, etc.

  3. My son is a rising high school junior. He loves math and he is a state-level math competition winner. He is organizing a free national math club (non-competitive) for homeschooled students in grades 6-8.

If interested, please complete the form below. Deadline: September 10th, 2020. The first meeting will be on September 14th (Monday) at 4:00 pm - 4:40 pm PDT on ZOOM (weekly on Mondays). https://forms.gle/n8bybVtKN9KYoTCfA

I just thought I would add that my ds took both AP Physics C classes with Lanctot during the 2014-2015 school year and did well on the exams. Ds swam and did debate and Mr. Lanctot was great about adjusting die dates. Ds always offered to take exams early but Mr. Lanctot always allowed him to take it a day late when he had a conflict with a due date.

    Thanks for your helpful review.

We used Lanctot. He was as hands-off as a teacher can possibly get as far as teaching style goes (if dd had a question, he would respond in a timely manner, however!). He graded homework quickly and the layout of his class was organized and methodical. No wasted/busy work involved. DD only took Physics ? Mechanics (not the Electricity/Magnetism option). It was one of her easier AP classes (she's math-inclined, however).

Each week, he would outline their reading assignments and homework and/or tests and labs. Dd would follow the instructions, turn in the work/labs/tests, and that was it! No discussion board requirements (there is a discussion board for questions, but it was rarely utilized).

DD chose to not take the AP exam for this class (she regrets that decision... lol), but felt that she would have been well-prepared for it had she chosen to do so.

This is exactly what we are looking for (no discussion requirement and no live sessions). Thank you so much for your detailed review.

  6. Wenti, Do you think that this could be taught by someone with no experience teaching?  I can likely find a tutor, but it would be someone without teaching experience.  Are you familiar with BetterChinese?  My thought was maybe to start something like that first, see how serious they are about learning, and then maybe jump to something else . . .

This set could be taught without teaching experience.

I am not familiar with BetterChinese. It's hard to teach phonics with no teaching experience. I also hire a professional mandarin teacher for foreign students in China (The teacher can speak English very well) to teach my son once a week (My son learns mandarin with me every day, and the teacher helps me teach grammar usages.) via Skype (25-minute 60 Chinese Yuan).

  7. Is there a similar set of texts using traditional characters?

Shuang Shuang Chinese Textbooks (total 20 books) have both simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese versions.

You can preview the simplified Chinese version here.

Please contact the author to order the book. email: sszw.admin@gmail.com

  8. I am a native Chinese speaker.

My DD is 5 years old. I use "si wu kuai du" (total 7 books) to teach her. You can buy the whole set from iPad App store.

For your older child, I'd suggest use HSK Standard Course books (total 6 levels). You can see the sample book here and get it via eBay. My DS (12-year-old) currently uses the level 3 book. The most difficult part is the Chinese Pinyin (phonics).

Literature – Literature at our house

Mr.Travers is very organized and he has deep understanding of literature. He usually takes one month to discuss one book. My DS has been enjoying his classes.

    Grammar—Barbarian Diagrammarian (The Lukeion Project)

    Writing – Classical Composition

We use curriculum with DVD lessons taught by Brett Vaden.

    Geometry—Jacobs 2nd edition

    Dislike  :confused1:

    Writing – Soverbose

The instructor gave comments no more than ten words! Total waste of money.

Grammar – Growing with Grammar Level 8

    No challenge.

  10. Just a quick followup on my note about WHA's Fundamentals of Expository Writing:  WHA is having an "open campus" January 24-26 so people can attend classes and see what they are like. I don't have any details yet, but if you are interested in any of their classes, there should be an opportunity on those three days to sit in on the classes and see what they are like.

(My DD & I did this with another online academy last spring and found it extremely useful in making a choice whether to go with that provider or not. It depends on how representative that class is of an average class, of course, but should be useful.)

I'm sure one of us will make a post (and cross-post) when we get more information about how to do this.

    Thanks for the information.
