  1. My Child is 14*yr DS low level literacy and numeracy (grade 1-2) is in highschool and still happy to participate in remedial programmes.
  2. Hi I am looking for any parents who have tred Cogmed and or Brain fitness pro junior. I am curious about WHY you tried these programmes and the impact that they had on your childs life after completion. Cogmed is very expensive Brain Fitness Pro Jr is a small one off payment. I appreciate any feedback that you have time to give me or if you can link me to older threads that have already discussed this that would be great. Thank you in advance :grouphug:

Hi all, When dealing with children who have a disability do any of you have advice in the area of anger/anxiety management. now that my ds is now 13 this is becoming an ongoing issue bordering on violence. Our psychologist tried to help for over a year and this has had NILL effect. Normal anger mangement strategies such as walking away, breathe deeply, scream into a pillow don't seem to work. The anger and frustration and anxiety are like a constant volcano and life is becoming hellish. Lindamood Bell has been great for increasing literacy and comprehension - is there a specialist program for our kid that aids anger mangement as well? All suggestions appreciated. Kindly Anne

  6. My dyslexic daughter is reading at a grade 1 level and wants to go back to public school next year. Any tips or advice on this dilemma? Primary School was hellish to say the least for us both and I am worried about banging my head against a brick wall with teaching staff again. This time though I am not as vulnerable and we all know what the problem is also I have an advocate willing to work with me. Can any-one tell me about what could possibly be the best approach with a school so that I am not stone walled all the time - or am I crazy to go back into this quagmire again ? http://ltuilc.blogspot.com/
  7. I really think it is uplifting to know our kids struggle through every **** word no make that every letter, sound and punctuation mark yet their WILL remains in tact - the will to read and achieve in our beautiful kids is amazing and inspiring. http://ltuilc.blogspot.com/

We have had such a long hard slog that there have not been many aha moments at all EVERYTHING is gradual and I mean years kind of gradual no I mean you must be Mother Theresa to have the kind of patience waiting for aha moments from my child. 1. Visualising and Verbalising gave us an AHA moment yet we walked out of the program after 3*months full time at high $$$$ cost at age 13 still only reading at a prep - grade 1 level but at least through VV she could now comprehend text read to her. 2. The speechie spent way way way too long and I mean years on LIPS if VV had been done straight away the impact would have been enormous! 3. After VV maths became easier not simple simon but at least the barriers weren't as great. My advice forget EVERYONE who says don't worry one day they will just get it. Some kids won't ever just get it they will only get it after it has been broken down into a million pieces and some-one patient enough shows them each piece and practices with them regularly. Stay strong - laugh a lot and get loads of support oh yeh and eat cake (gluten free of course) I find that helps in so many ways!!! http://ltuilc.blogspot.com/

Hi I forgot to mention in my post above that many resources can be purchased on e-bay so don't feel like you have to spend thousands on set up - as you will need every penny for training in whatever course you choose. I always scan e-bay for work books of our chosen course BEFORE attending training try and purchase and take all of it with you to check it is right etc.

It seems like you have already had a detailed response - however I would like to share that after 5*years experience in the public system and banging my head against a wall with teaching staff I also took matters into my own hands. What I have learned is that at different stages you need different programs. Also one on one teaching is very intense and adding educational computer software to help make teaching fun can break things up a little. I used Lindamood-Bell;http://www.lindamoodbell.com/ initially with a speech therapist as we could not afford the school we attended 1-2 times per week. We also completed 2* rounds of FASTFORWORD; http://fastforword.rtrk.com.au/?scid=25593&kw=4295327at ages 7-9 we found these two programs combined to make useful progress. You can be trained in both and get a license for FASTFORWORD cheaply. Also use fun, colourful and interactive resources like the ones you can get from LME.http://www.learningmadeeasier.com.au/aboutus.html We now use a combination of Spalding, Lindamood-Bell, LME and SRA. And yes we are making great gains you do need to persist especially in the younger years. My daughter loves sewing and sewing class is her favourite and being in Guides has helped with leadership skills and gaining confidence in a safe space where she can say "hey I am dyslexic could you please help me out with reading this."   11. The fact that these delays have not been glossed over or ignored is fantastic. YOu have an opportunity to change the course of this childs life as all research points to consistant long term early intervention is most effective for these children. If the child was a teenager it would be a much more difficult process however you have the opportunity to help strengthen muscle development with an OT, rewire brain activity with a speechie and psych and most importantly provide an emotional connection to life through all the love you will give.   12. Hi and well done to you for recognising this could be an issue for your child. I would advise to seek testing ASAP so that you know for sure if you are dealing with CAPD or not. Most audiology clinics will also test for CAPD however I have noticed a growing trend here in Australia for clinics to cut out this service as they cater to and make a larger profit from providing hearing services for the elderly. Having gone through two CAPD testing sessions with my child (we can legally only test every 3*years here) I would like to offer you some pre-test advice. 1. These tests are very expensive well they are here anyway and often not covered by health insurance so be prepared for some financial outlay. 2. Naturally make sure your child is well rested before each appointment as they are exhausting for the child to complete - my daughter would fall asleep as soon as she was in the car even though it was only 1:00pm. 3. It can be worth seeing a speech pathologist before you do the test - why?? Well they can give you an indication of deficits that they are noticing that will help you advise the audiologist as to why you think this test is necessary. Also a speech pathologist can help you interpret the audiology report in a language that you can understand - some reports are better than others but it always helps if afterwards you have some-one who knows you and knows your child to help break all the info down for you and come up with a workable plan. 4. Cost speech pathology is expensive as well so an initial assessment and one appointment only should be all you need b4 you have your audilology appointment. 5. Don't panic if it is CAPD we are living in a time where technology and science have powered on to deliver us many educational alternatives and strategies that will allow our CAPD children to as functional in life as any other child.   13. Hello to all the amazingly patient and determined mothers of children with special needs. I would like to thank you all for your help over the past months as I agonised over spending the last of what was left of my savings on the Lindamood-Bell programme. I read many of your forum postings about a variety of programmes and intervention and decided to complete LMB for my dyslexic/APD daughter age 12. Lindamood-Bell has changed our lives forever my child who could not read past a kindergarten level is now reading for the first time in her life and I cannot begin to explain the joy for her. LMB does NOT solve all the issues of APD however they do give life long strategies that will stay with a child enabling them to read, write and comprehend. I had come to a point where I could no longer work with my child we both came to despising literacy work and the school offered very little support with unsuitable programmes.   14. Hi there, I cannot rave about Lindamood-Bell enough it has done us wonders. My daughter is 12*years old and we have tried over 6*programmes to help with her reading over 5*years of schooling I cannot beging to explain how her confidence and self belief was impacted by her inability to read. My daughter has dyslexia and auditory processing disorder which is not recognised as a disability in Australia. This means that all remedial therapy is paid for by me and her father who kindly agreed to pay for half even though we are no longer together. As a last resort we turned to the Lindamood-Bell programme and have been shell shocked by the results. And my daughter loves going there prefers LMB to school anyday and is thriving, experiencing success and very slowly gaining self confidence again. Dyslexia and APD are for life I get that but I am less worried now that Jade can read - we went from reading at a less than kindergarten level and will be finishing reading at a grad 3-4 level. This from a child who was told by a child psychologist that she would never learn to read and write. The programme included four hours of seeing stars and two hours of Visualising and Verbalising. In order to complete this course I had to quit my job and move interstate it took two years to save for and it is the best investment I have made in my life.   15. I'm with you there are some days where I wonder why God thought I would have the strength to raise this child and guide her through to adulthood in one piece. After some time I realised that she had special gifts of her own a unique joy for lessons that were NOT academic. We changed to a steiner school where there is a focus on crafts and hands on learning and manage a modified curriculum for the rest. At home I have read books out loud for fun we go to the library and pick out books for her age group that DS could never manage so I read them to her at night as a reward for completing speech exercises. A balance is difficult and I am giving up on the school all together and trying out Lindamood bell as per my previous post so I think we all just have to find what suits our family and children best.   16. Thanks for your response and your honesty I am not expecting miracles from LMB but an improvement in reading would be nice. I had considered home school many times and I have read that many of you on this forum choose to home school and I take my hat off to you all for that. What has stopped me is that the school still get my daughter to do things that I wouldn't be able to get her to do in a pink fit. Having said that I have to remain vigilant in ensuring that she is getting a modified curriculum and it has taken years to get any kind of funding however for this year and the first year of highschool she will receive one on one lessons for literacy. Math is also a big problem - I have purchased some of LMB products but have trouble working with my daughter now to be honest she has years of frustration and embarrassment up her sleeve she does not work well with me - strangers can get more out of her. If LMB can take her literacy up even one level from where she is at now I would be happy.
  17. Hi my daughter is about to complete an 8*week LMB course to improve her reading. My daughter has auditory processing disorder and severe dyslexia. As there is only one LMB school in Australia I am about to move from Melbourne to Sydney, I have begun placing household items in storage, quit my job and am totally FREAKING OUT. What am I doing spending my entire savings on this?? Please if you have had success with LMB or are considering LMB or think LMB is a complete waste of money please give some feedback, reassurance or tell me to run like the wind in the other direction. And before you ask - YES we have completed fastforword and found it to help in a very MINOR fashion, my daughter has been attending speech therapy every week for 4*years we have had enough speech we both hate the speechie - I am hoping LMB will help put the speechie out of our lives! I can relate to your frustrations - One of my new years resolutions is to STOP talking to parents with normal kids about the difficulties of having a child with dyslexia, auditory processing disorder and speech difficulties. They just don't get it stick to news and weather and find support else where!
