Read Aloud List for American History - What am I missing?
Mert replied to Woodland_Mom's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I'm doing Amer Hist with my 5yo this year and am trying to put together some read-alouds as well. I'm wondering if anyone can share if they thought any of these would be good for a younger crowd. I read The Courage of Sarah Noble and LOVED it. Hoping to find several more that are on that level. Thanks!! :D -
You can read the Mara Pratt books yourself here... http://www.mainlesson.com/displayauthor.php?author=pratt The first 2 are also on librivox, I believe. ~HTH

How did you meet your husband or wife??
Mert replied to BatmansWife's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Online dating site, too! :D I've been a little sheepish about it, but as you say I see it more and more often. First time we spoke on the phone, we talked for 5 hours. I knew we were going to get along famously then and knew for sure we were getting married when I met his family! -
s/o school supplies - novels in high school
Mert replied to momofkhm's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Same here for summer reading and for the novels and such we read in school. And I promise I do not want to read Moby Dick or The Scarlet Letter over again. I would have been happy to have either from the library, but our study was too long. -
And if you must have a little bit of bread or bagel, I highly recommend the Udi and Rudy's brands. I just looked them up on Amazon, and I find them locally much cheaper than that. Don't let it scare you! And for the record, I'm not gf, my son is... So, I eat this stuff right next to regular bread and bagels, and I think it tastes fine. It's the first gf bread-type items that I've tried that really are a decent match.

We've enjoyed the crackers and a few other things by Elana. http://www.elanaspantry.com/ My library had a couple of her cookbooks, and Trader Joes has almond meal for $3.50 per lb. It's not as "smooth" as she would suggest, but it's fine for crackers. I wouldn't attempt a cake or cookie recipe with it, but it does the job for a snack.

Thought this might be helpful for anyone else that wants to play along with us! It's a great blog post about what Pinterest is and how to get started. http://www.homesavvyatoz.com/2011/08/10/pinterest/

We meant to delay and started doing our research about which ones to do when ds turned 2. We realized that many of the vaccines were to help babies and toddlers until their systems could fight off the diseases themselves. So now we haven't done any. We're still considering tetanus and c pox if he hasn't gotten them naturally by the time he's in his teens.

This isn't what you were asking about but wanted to share a different sort of idea. When ds was a toddler, he was an EARLY riser. He was regularly up for the day at 4:45. We just set up our playroom so that all the doorways could be gated and so that it was super duper child safe, and I kept a pillow and blanket in there. I regularly slept for another hour or 2 after he woke during that "season" by moving us both in there and closing off the gates. You obviously don't want any advice from me as I never figured out that sleeping thing. Just thought something like this might help until you find a good schedule.

:bigear: My ds is in the same boat... high decoding ability, low comprehension. Thanks for all the suggestions so far. -
Attention Paperbackswap people!
Mert replied to Nestof3's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I wrap all my books in a ziploc or plastic grocery bag and then a brown paper sack. And I love ex-library books... I now have 1/2 the Collier American History series b/c of that. :D -
Sahamamama, do you mind if I post your family tree idea on another hsing board. I would totally quote you and give you all the credit! ;) I was discussing this with a couple other moms and thought they would LOVE your idea. Just wanted to make sure you're OK with it, though.

Any more suggestions?? :bigear:

Love the family tree idea and your history suggestions! Thanks for chiming in. I (roughly) based the list on the Guest Hollow topics but had added in pioneers and life on the Mississippi b/c of books that I already owned including 3 or 4 Little House picture books. Now that you mention it, I do have a couple books about the moon landing or at least astronauts as we visited the Space Ctr in Huntsville earlier in the year. Thanks again!

Thanks for the links and all the info, sbgrace! I think we have The Rag Coat. I wasn't going to try to line up all the FIAR books, but I think I can make a few line up like Paul Revere's Ride and your suggestion. Thank you, kolamum! :D

I'm going to do a 1 yr overview of Am History using picture books (Maestro, Fritz, Adler, d'Aulaire) for Kindy next year. Would you look over my list of topics? Do I have too many or did I miss something important? I'm not so sure that we're going to hit the wars and stuff towards the end. I'm thinking I'd rather just pick a few people to read about and mention that they lived during such and such war. Any suggestions for who to study WWI and on? Thanks for taking a look!! :) Native Americans Discovery: Leif, Columbus Explorers Jamestown Pilgrims Colonies Revolution New Nation Thomas Jefferson Lewis & Clark Johnny Appleseed Andrew Jackson Trail of Tears Alamo Transcontinental Railroad Gold Rush Oregon Trail Pioneers Pony Express Slavery Underground Railraod Civil War Abraham Lincoln Reconstruction Wild West Buffalo Bill Thomas Edison Life on the Mississippi Immigration Wright Brothers Teddy Roosevelt World War I Dust Bowl Depression World War II Pearl Harbor

Could you link to an article or point me/us in the right direction? I'm sorry to say that I don't know what you're talking about.

In the samples that I saw on the website, it looks like most of the student activities are coloring and copy work. Am I wrong? (I hope I'm wrong!) I was looking for more hands on or crafty ideas. I'm considering using the David C King books, http://www.amazon.com/Wild-West-Days-Discover-Activities/dp/0471239194/ref=sr_1_6?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1310590652&sr=1-6 , but I'd love to have something all planned out especially at this price.
