  1. THis year we used CLE 5. Next year we will use CLE 6. Then, for the 7th grade year, I was not sure what to do. We could use BJU pre-algebra as we did with his older siblings, but I would get the updated version. Or we would just stick with the CLE math 7 or 8. But the plan would be to go straight into Algebra I the 8th grade year. (Can I just say right here that CLE math, reading and LA are just wonderful. Just got test scores back and scores in all three of those areas are up! The constant review might not work for some kids, but for this ds, it was just what he needed.) Thanks for the information, Michelle! We will plan to stick with CLE 7, unless the Lord leads us in another area. Blessings, Brenda:001_smile:
  2. Which of the CLE grade levels would be the best "pre-algebra" type course.....Grade 7 or 8 math? We will follow up with:(Because we have these on the shelf and they work:001_smile:) 8th grade: Algebra I with Math Relief by Mr. Firebaugh and LOF 9th grade: Algebra II with Math Relief by Mr. Firebaugh and LOF 10th grade: Jacob's Geometry with MWF lesson plans and LOF 11th grade: MUS Pre Calc and LOF 12th grade: CC Thanks! 3. 1)Christian World View 2)Academically challenging 3) Not too far from home.(Being able to get home in a days time.:auto:) 4) Not more than 1500 students. Wants to KNOW his professors and TALK with them and DISCUSS with them. 5)Affordable(Do not want to take on debt to do this.) 6)Good cafeteria!(O.K. y'all....He's a boy....has his priorities;)) 7) Some type of community service: He is an Eagle Scout. LOVES to serve the community. Wants to major in math, history, or econ with the plan to maybe teach those. We are near Memphis, so here is our list of colleges. Not in any particular order..... Bellhaven(MS) Ouchita(AR) Bethel(TN) Bryan(TN) Covenant(GA) Lambuth(TN) Asbury(KY)
  4. All of these are viable options for high school. However, each will require different amounts of YOUR time in planning. I have used TOG classic for years. But this year I am going to use MFW for the very first time, because I am tired and I need something all planned for my student. We as homeschool moms spend A LOT of time trying to find the PERFECT curriculum for our students and sometimes we forget to figure ourselves or our families into the equation. Do I have time to plan this curriculum? Will this curriculum be too much for us this year? Will it cause me to spend too much time with ONE of my students, and thus maybe neglect the others.....Hmmmm........:glare: Pray about this and see where the Lord is leading you. He will guide you. Just something to think about. Blessings, Brenda:001_smile: Who hasn't had her second cup of coffee yet.....:001_huh:
  5. That speaks VOLUMES! Wow! Thanks for sharing! Brenda (Especially impressive to a former music major;))
  6. Thanks for the information. We are seeing that a lot in the schools we have been looking at lately. The very same thing could be said of the college where I attended. It makes me very sad. Christian worldview is very important to our family. Blessings, Brenda:001_smile:
  7. Small LACs are exactly what our ds is looking for....He will be either a math or history major. He has looked at Bryan, Union, and Lambuth. Milsaps would be about 3and 1/2 hours from our home. Not bad. Bellhaven is also in Jackson, so we could hit two birds with one stone.:001_smile: Brenda
  8. Very helpful information! I looked and I don't see much difference in CONTENT from the the 2nd to the 3rd edition. Just looks like they updated the pictures. Hmmmm....will have to think about this, now won't we! Blessings, Brenda:001_smile:
  9. Anyone have any information on this college? Blessings, Brenda:001_smile:
  10. Can anyone tell me if there is a BIG difference between the older 2nd editon and the brand new 3rd edition. We have the 3rd editon of 5th and 6th grade and just love it. But little sister coming along behind big brother wants to try BJU too! She would need 3rd grade science. But I am having the hardest time finding the new edition for sale used. So I was wondering if there was much difference between the 2nd and 3rd editions, just in case I have to buy the 2nd edition. Any thoughts? Blessings, Brenda:001_smile:
  11. We DID hold our 2nd DD back and not push her to do Algebra until 9th grade. It was the BEST thing we could have done for HER. She feels SO confident now in her math skills and may even do as well on her ACT scores as her big brother! But she really needed me to let her mature. I am SO glad that I did. Continue to encourage those parents.:001_smile: I used to teach too. I understand where you are coming from.....;) Gotta run make sandwiches for workers who are still helping flood victims in our area....... Thanks for ALL the advice and words of wisdom..... Blessings, Brenda
  12. My goal for this class is not to hold him back at all. This is his VERY first CC class. I want this to be a good experience. I don't want him to struggle right off the bat. He is going to be getting used to the whole college atmosphere, being on time, doing the work assigned in a timely manner, and listening to someone who is not mom. So, my goal for this class is for him to ENJOY the college experience with something he loves....ALGEBRA. :D My goal is not to find the most rigorous course. There will be time enough for harder math classes....Next semester.....;)
  13. Lori and others, Good morning, y'all! A long time ago, YEARS AGO, I remember you(LoriM) telling us that one of the first classes a math student needed to take at the CC was College Algebra. And while this class might be a little easy for some math students, that it was good to step back just a bit, get used to the college atmosphere and get a comfortable with CC classes. So, we are doing that this fall with my senior. He has taken Algebra I, II, Geometry, and PreCalc at home. (Scored a 31 on the ACT math subtest) And this fall he will go to the CC and take College Algebra to "get his feet wet". But what math class do we follow this up with in the spring? Any thoughts? Blessings, Brenda:001_smile:
  14. are both teenagers and work in their rooms. One prefers a planet chair, the other has a desk. They would go crazy if they had to read in the school room with the "littles". I keep the 2nd grader with me at the kitchen table. And I work with the 5th grader in the school room and send him to "finish up" or work on his own in my bedroom. He needs quiet too. We are ALL over the house. Be flexible as the kids get older and ask them where THEY prefer to study as they become teenagers. HTH, Brenda:001_smile:
  15. Great news, Kelli! I know you must be so proud of your daughter. Blessings, Brenda P.S. I pm'd you.:D
  16. Where is the best place to purchase this? (O.K. y'all what I am really trying to say is where can I find this the cheapest? Dave Ramsey budget, you know!;)) Blessings, Brenda:001_smile:
  17. a Shakespeare comedy, but I would throw in a tragedy too. Macbeth or Hamlet are my favs. And I also would agree that Dickens is a must. Brenda:001_smile:
  18. Wonderful, wonderful..... Also, if you have a younger student that your older student can "teach", then I would suggest have them teach AAS to a younger brother or sister. Brenda:001_smile:
  19. Taking Senior year to hit all of the lit titles that we didn't have time for OR I didn't think he was ready for when we hit the those years..... And DS told me a few he wanted to do also. We are combining it with a Writing Comp class at local CC to make English 12. We started the WTM cycle with Ancients in 8th, Middle Ages in 9th, Early American in 10th and Civil War to Modern in 11th. For his Senior we will cover Government and do all the lit titles we did not get to.....FUN!!! Here is what we have so far Illiad Odyssey Another Shakespeare The Scarlet Letter Great Expectations and The Jungle Blessings, Brenda:001_smile:
  20. Thinking of using this with my senior next year. Does anyone have any idea what kind of credits I can count for this? Bible? Philosophy? Brenda:001_smile:
  21. Thanks bunches....Think I am going to stick with my original idea to go with MFW. I have another child that is graduating and I know I need to simplify for next year with the others. OH! But the price! AUGH! :w00t:
  22. We have had years when we were very faithful to TOG and years that we were more faithful to BJU. I agree with the above poster.....If you KNOW this is going to be a busy year, then I would go with BJU. TOG takes time and LOTS of your energy. But some years are JUST LIKE THAT. They are Git R Done years, and that is o.k. TOG is for when you want more of indepth discussion and deep critical thinking and LOTS of reading. Blessings, Brenda:001_smile:
  23. Can anyone compare for me these two curriculums? We are looking at the Ancient History volume for both. This would be for my 10th grade dd, who is a Wiggly Willy by Cathy Duffy's definition. She has used a combination of TOG classic and BJU in the past. And does anyone know where we can see a sample of KONOS? I can not find it on the website. Blessings, Brenda:001_smile:
