Good morning, Jean,
I am in the same boat.....I have an 8th grader who needs to start moving toward the Rhetoric level......Artsy dd.....who would much rather knit than do her TOG work......
Here are a few things to think about.....
1) Will this student be doing these lit pieces in a four years? If not, you might want to bump her up now. If yes, then don't rush her.
2) What year plan are you in right now? If you are presently in Year 1 of TOG it would be harder to bump up your student. Year one pieces are much harder in my opinion than say, Year 3 pieces.
3) You don't have to do ALL or Nothing. You could do a little of both. That is the beauty of TOG. And that is what I will be doing with my 8th grader. I am going to try her with "some" of the Rhetoric pieces this spring, to get her feet wet. And I am giving her some "say" in what we do. She really seems to like being able to choose what pieces she will be studying.
Hope this helps!
Blessings,
Brenda

Heh, my friend Yvonne!
HOW IN THE WORLD DO YOU FIND ME??? I haven't been on the boards in weeks also....high school with two will do it to you every time....but it is sooo nice to "see and hear" from you again!
Anyway, does the Jacobs Text require an answer key or teacher's guide?
Blessings,
Brenda

Heh, ya'll!
Oldest ds will complete his Algebra II curriculum early this year in Feb.....(He has done Alg.I, Geometry, and Algebra II.)
I don't want to start Pre-Calc until the next school year starts, around July.
What kind of things could he do to work on some more Algebra II until then? This would be from mid February til say May.......
Thought about....
Fred.....
The Teaching Company Algebra II by Murray Siegal(which is on sale in Dec!)
Aleks.....
Any other thoughts or ideas..... Just don't want to "rush" to Pre-Calc...Algebra II is sooo important.....
Thanks for any ideas....
Blessings,
Brenda

We have also found some in the newspaper in the classified section. With new trim on the top and a new coat of paint, they look good enough to go in the living room. I painted them to match our fireplace.
Got them for $20 a piece. Someone just wanted to get rid of them.
Good luck!

I am always amazed at the wonderful ideas that come from these boards. It gives me so much to think about and pray about.....
I really like the idea of the Teaching Company Video on Econ by Timothy Taylor....But the cost is $374.95! Would this ever go on sale like the high school courses are on sale presently? Was thinking of using this along with the "Penny Candy" book as an intro.
Thanks!

My son has been reading the "Fair Tax Book" and taken a Dave Ramsey Money Management course for Teens, and suddenly he is VERY interested in Economics and Business. (Wow, going to jump on that quickly! Even though, I already had his "plan" for this year.......)
What are some ideas for an economics course? Would the study guide and book to "What ever happened to Penny Candy?" be enough.....Or would we need to look into the Bob Jones DVD course of GOV/ECON? Any ideas?

Liz or anyone else,
Where is the best place to order "Vocabulary for the High school student"? And does the answer key come with it or do you have to order it separately?
Thanks in advance,
Brenda

Once again the WTM ladies come through! ALL of you really helped me to make this decision. As my very best friend told me yesterday, "Sometimes you must choose the BEST things and leave off the GOOD things". There are seasons in our lives and this just might not be our "season" for speech and debate.
In addition, my dad passed away back in March and the kids and I still have not come to terms with that yet. We too are helping and checking on my Mom who is about 2and 1/2 hours away. So, this may be a time for "healing" and just getting our regular school work done. (Which is a heavy load with 4 kids and doing TOG!!!)
I know that there is a 4-H group that is close by....It meets once a month. I will check into that.
Thanks to all of you!
Blessings to you this beautiful morning,
Brenda Scott

I have been looking at our schedule for this year. We will have a 10th grader, 8th grader, 4th grader and 1st grader.
I had "planned" on doing speech and debate this year with the oldest three. I would require us driving into Memphis, (hour, one way) once a week for speech and debate club and working on our speeches once a week. (Not to mention, competition in the early spring.....)
With the price of gas.....and the reality of teaching all four levels in our homeschool......(We use TOG)......I am "rethinking" this speech and debate idea for THIS year. Am I just wimping out??????
Would it be "too late" if ds started speech and debate next year as an 11th grader? How important is this class to homeschoolers? What has been your experience with speech and debate? Any ideas????
Blessings,
Brenda

Does anyone know how we would go about setting up a "Box Tops for Education" account for my homeschool group? Does anyone have a # that I could call?

What a blessing all of you are!
Thanks again!

We are going to St. Augustine, Fla in a few weeks for vacation. Any ideas of things to do and see that were a "hit" for you and your family?
Any locals here that could give us advice?
Thanks,
Brenda

Cindy, there are lots of TOG users here on the WTM boards. Do you have any specific questions that we could help you with?
We are in our second round with TOG and I find that at the rhetoric levels, TOG finally becomes fun! I am starting to see fruit from all this reading, discussing, and writing that we have been doing......:001_smile: WooHoo!
But you have to be very careful with TOG. You must tailor it to your child and use it as a spine. And know that it is o.k. not to read EVERYBOOK in the TOG plan.

help with his retention of the material? Just wondering.....have a 10th grader who will be doing Chemistry this year. Thinking we might do this with him....:001_smile: I KNOW I will be using this with 8th dd/physical science. She is a VERY hands on learner and is very artsy.

Oh, yes, I learned a long time ago that TOG was my spine. I think that once moms get that, and use it as a resource instead of a "strict" curriculum, you can really enjoy using TOG. So, we are always "tweaking" it to make it fit our family. We are now on our second round of TOG with a Rhetoric, an almost Rhetoric(8th), an upper grammar and a lower grammar.
Thanks for all the wonderful information on pairing TC and TOG.
Blessings to all of you this morning,
Brenda

Another silly question.....Like TOG really needs to add anything to it, but saw that the TC had their American History DVD on sale and wondering if anyone ever paired this with TOG year 2 units 3 and 4 and Year 3 Units 1 and 2. This DVD looks like a lot of fun!:)
And if so, do you have a schedule for pairing the two together?
Blessings,
Brenda

Oh, thank you so much.....Makes my job much easier. :)

Good morning, Michelle!
Just wondering if you had a schedule that would match up the video segments and the modules of Apologia?
Blessings,
Brenda

O.K. is this crazy or what.... Please be honest...
We will be doing Apologia Chemistry with our 10th grader. We were going to go once a week for his labs with Veritas Classical schools, but the class may not make due to low numbers.....We will know no later than August 1st.
SOOO, thinking how to suppliment our Apologia Chemistry if the labs do not make. And I saw that the Teaching Company videos were on sale!
But has anyone ever used these? Have you used them with Apologia? What was your experience?
Will check back on the boards tomorrow....
Blessings,
Brenda

Thank you ladies for all this information. It was all very helpful. DD has been tutored this summer in a book called "Latin for Today". So, she has the basic vocabulary and is translating well. That is why I was hoping to do Latin in a 4 day schedule as opposed to a 5 day schedule.
Thanks again,
Brenda
-
Have not ordered Henle Latin yet. But how many days a week, in a traditional 180 school year will be needed to complete Henle Latin I??? Could it be done 3 or 4 days a week or would it need to be done all 5 days a week. AND how much time a day would be needed....30 minutes or more like an hour???
Blessings,
Brenda

Thinking about using this for my 8th/10th graders this year for vocabulary. Just wondering what your experience has been with this curriculum.

I saw what Cathy Duffy, Dean Andreola, and the Sonlight catalog had to say about Teaching Textbooks. (Been searching and searching....:))
But was just wondering if SWB ever checked it out.
Thanks, however, for your information! Any comments you want to add regarding TT?????
Thanks,
Brenda
Apologia/The Teaching Company Combo
in High School and Self-Education Board
Posted
This past year we have used a combo approach to Chemistry by pairing Apologia Chemistry AND the Teaching Company DVD's "Chemistry" as taught by Frank Cardulla. Excellent, Excellent, Excellent! This is working GREAT for our family.
But next year we would like to do Apologia Physics.....(Here is my question) Are there any Teaching Company courses that could be paired with Apologia for PHYSICS???? OR do you know of anything else that might "bump up" our Apologia Physics?
Thanks in advance,
Brenda:)
