  1. We did the WTM method all along with my first two.....But I think you are right.....At some point during the middle school years, you have to gradually move them to the point of learning vocab and taking tests to prepare them for high school. I think high school was a SHOCK to my first two.....They handled it, but I could have made the transition easier for them.

This is what I plan on doing with my "littles". We are going to use the WTM method, k-4th grades.....but then some time in 5th, we start transitioning to more of a text book approach......That is where we are with 2nd ds....moving into 5th grade next July. And he is my little Thomas Edison....Don't want to mess him up in the area of science.

And like LoriM said, the text book reading would be required, but de-emphasized. And leave time for projects and history of the scientists.

I can not thank all of you ladies enough for this thread. I was moving in this direction anyway, but sometimes it is nice just to have someone confirm what you are doing.

Blessings to all of you this Lord's Day,

  2. If you could have a "do over" for your kids in science, what would you do differently.....AND ......What curriculums would you use to prepare your kids for high school science?

Just wondering this morning.....I have two students that are presently in high school and we are moving them toward graduation.....

However, I have two more coming along and I am thinking about praying about their paths this morning.

We used WTM, LLB, and Rainbow science with the first two to prepare them for high school science. Hmmm......we had fun and they were prepared. But it was a lot of work for mom....trying to find library books and to suppliment. We read and read and read library books.

Should I prepare the other two the same way....or use a more text book approach?

Am I the only one out there that stresses over these kinds of things? My husband thinks I'm nuts at times......

If you had a do over, what would you do differently??

    Blessings,

  3. 11th grader and 9th grader.....Still praying about which child to use this with.......Right now I have Format writing for the 11th grader and Wordsmith Craftsman for the 9th grader.....

Had thought I would work through Lively with ds 11th grader the 1st part of the year including some of the summer.....BEFORE he does Format....

And then do Lively with dd 9th grader AFTER she is done with Craftsman at the end of the year in the spring OR beginning of her 10th grader year.....

    Does that help?

    Brenda

  4. Can anyone tell me what the big differences are in these two texts? I have heard that the newer edition is a little more homeschool friendly, but want to hear what folks have to say.

We have used Apologia Biology in the past.....and have been pleased, but may have a science major coming up in the ranks...... I know he will need something more intense......Just looking and planning for the future. Looking to see if we might be able to tackle the BJU text......

    Blessings,

  5. Oh, my goodness!

I had no idea that so many of you here on the board were involved with 4-H. And on top of that, that there were SO many of the WTM'ers that were in TN! (I am SO jealous of you middle Tennesseans! I miss the hills and valleys of middle Tennessee.)

Thank you so much for the thoughts and encouragement!

    You guys are great!

Got to head to a pancake breakfast fundraiser that my ds is participating in this morning for his honor society.....Yummm......

    (((HUGS)))),

    Brenda:001_smile:

  6. We may have the opportunity for our family to participate in 4-H next year.

We have been very active in scouting but never 4-H.

Can anyone tell me how 4-H works? Do you get to pick what topics you will work on AND how long do you normally work on each one?

Also, could you tell me about your experiences (Good or bad) with 4-H....

    Next year I will have a 11th, 9th, 5th, and 1st.

    Thanks in advance,

    Brenda:001_smile:

  7. I think it would depend on your daughter.....We are just finishing up AG too. I have a 10th grader and 8th grader that are using it at the same time. My 10th grader KNOW HIS GRAMMAR COLD. He just scored a 29 on the English Sub test of the ACT. He will only do the review from AG next year for his grammar.

However, his sister is younger and though she did well in the course....something in my gut says......She does not know this stuff COLD like big brother.....So, she will do the review next year....And in 10th grade we may do some more grammar with her like Jensen's grammar....Just for fun.....because I want her to know it COLD.

    Make sense?

    HTH,

    Brenda:001_smile:

  8. My kids are required to have 1 credit in computers. This should include typing, word/works documents, Excel, and powerpoint presentations. We will use another program for typing....but for the rest....What do you use?

This is SO out of my comfort zone!

Anyway, I see in the Sonlight catalog, Professor Teaches: Microsoft Office 2007. Would this work? Anyone used this?

OR have you used something different?

Really needing help on this one!

    Blessings,

    Brenda:001_smile:

  9. Yes, we have support groups around here. But most of the moms in MY group have younger folks....We only have a few high school folks....But I am connected to the groups in the Memphis area. Good idea! Thanks, Jean, I'll go check it out.

I like the idea of doing all of SOS I and 1/2 of SOS II.....We can do that! And the grammar is covered! Yea! I just was not comfortable with the RS because of that. And the price is more in line with what we can spend this year. Plus, AOP is having a 20%sale in April which would save us even more.

Thanks for sharing your experience with all of us.

    Blessings,

    Brenda:001_smile:

  10. 130 lessons is very do-able around here. And I don't think the whole to parts would throw my kids, as that is how their Latin program was designed. So, they seem to be comfortable with that.

My only issue with SOS is that I would like to see a sample of the Spanish I online, and I can't seem to find it. I don't like to buy something unless I can see a sample of it. Any ideas what I am doing wrong?

Thanks for taking your precious time to answer my silly questions. What a blessing that you and the many other ladies on this board have been to me.

I will continue to pray for what to do with Spanish I. Sometimes I have to just sit and wait and pray.

    Blessings,

    Brenda

  11. How did you KNOW that the Alpha Omega catalog came in the mail today???HEEHEE :001_smile: Just joking.... I have been watching your posts and knew that you could tell me about SOS Spanish I. But I had no idea about the Power Glide. Thanks for the information.

As for SOS Spanish I, how long each day would it take to complete a lesson (minutes per day)? AND how many days a week?

And are the instructions clear to the student as to what they have to do each day?

    Blessings,

    Brenda

  12. That when almost everything else you do is "over the top", then in some classes, you don't want to do over the top. There has to be a balance to your day....especially when you have 4 or more kids to homeschool....

If we were "over the top" in ALL our classes, I would be one stressed out lady! And so would my kids!

    Good point, Sharon.:iagree:

    Brenda

  13. And that is why I was actually leaning toward the Power Glide in that it had more of a "grammar portion" to it than RS did. After doing grammar, grammar, and more grammar, with Latin, I wanted a curriculum that had SOME grammar to it.

But I never hear anyone talk about Power Glide on these boards....Hmmmm.....Wonder why?

    Brenda

  14. O.K. ya'll(Can you tell I'm from the south?):001_smile:

Anyway, we are looking for a FUN and a "Git R Dun" approach to Spanish for 11th/12th grades. We want to earn 2 years of high school credit. We already have 2 years of high school Latin under our belts and it was pretty intense. Did very well on the NLE.

We have other goals in our homeschool that will be much more important for us this coming year....speech...essay writing .....and logic.....OH, and getting Eagle Project Finished. These are on the front burner....Spanish is not.....

So, with all that in mind, we want to do something FUN in Spanish , but still get those high school credits counted. "Spanish Light" is what we need.

Here are the two options that I am looking at today....

Power Glide Spanish (Two year course)

    Or

    Rosetta Stone Spanish

Both of these were recommended in the WTM by SWB. That is why I picked both of those. Susan has never failed me as of yet!:001_smile: Thanks, Susan! I read a lot about Rosetta Stone on the boards, but not so much on Power Glide. Why is that?

Any comments on either of these courses OR do you have something that I have not thought of......

    Listening:bigear:

    What say ye?

    Brenda
