  1. thanks. i wll look. i know what florida state colleges require, but he might end up going out of state. thanks. based on my minimal research, i think it's 4 years of social studies that most require.....hmmmm
  2. okay, don't laugh. How about Time4Learning US HIsotry, just for an easier course? I know, i know. But it could serve as a spine, and he could do other readings and such. I think we need ONE class that is more flexible as the others are really demanding.
  3. we thought of Witty Wordsmith because he needs work on his vocab. Logic--just cuz the class looks great. And dh really wants him to take it. I'd drop it, personally. Maybe i can convince DH to let him take one class at onlineg3, an american history class. those classes are light, imo, and dh doesn't like them for that reason. but drop the logic and take that instead. that way i know we'll get an american history out of the way. florida requires 1 year wh, 1 year amer history, and half credit each econ and govt.
  4. Okay this is what i found for Florida public schools--i dont know if as homeschoolers we need to abide by this but it's a good guide. We're fine with Language Arts and Math and Science. But I wonder if he shouldn't take American History this year with WTM Academy... LANGUAGE ARTS 4 MATHEMATICS 3/4 class of 2011 SCIENCE 3 WORLD HISTORY 1 AMERICAN HISTORY 1 ECONOMICS .5 AMERICAN GOV’T .5 PRACTICAL AND FINE ARTS 1 LIFE MGMT. SKILLS .5 PERSONAL FITNESS .5 PHYSICAL EDUCATION .5 ELECTIVES 8.5
  5. He does Tae Kwon Do so that's a credit for PE. TBH I have no idea what requirements are in Florida LOL. I probably should check that.
  6. Thanks. Yes, that's exactly what DH and I were discussing--easier and more classes, or fewer and harder. We want fewer and harder, and don't plan on 'protecting' his gpa at all--he's a solid B student now except in Math. Do you think the Logic is too much to add for 10th grade, just in terms of work load? I know Jetta's class is a lot of work, and AP Calc will be too. He reads slowly, as I mentioned, and GC will be a lot of heavy reading requirements. He's also slow with Spanish, but getting better (no, you just can't stare at the words and hope they magically get absorbed into your brain...) I worry about overloading, and WH has a very strict withdrawal policy.
  7. My son is a somewhat slow worker and he's NOT a "work into the night to get the job done" kid, either. He likes his down time. He's getting better, but reading is a bit slow, and Spanish and vocab learning is slow (faster with Math). I don't want to overload him in 10th but i DO want to ramp up a bit each year in terms of expectations. That said, what do you all BTDT people think of this courseload? Monday and Wednesday will have 4 1/2 hours of online classes, which is a LOT i think. I could eliminate Logic 2 but then think "is that enough?" DS14 does much better with structured online classes, and we have decided i will NOT be his teacher for any subjects but just oversee the online stuff. So too much? Just right? Physics: Clover Creek Physics with Jetta Seboly Calc AP: Wilson Hill w Anne Steublen: The Great Conversaton 1+4: Wilson Hill 9:30 to 11 Tu-Thur Spanish 2 at Wilson Hill: 2:00 to 3:30 pm Mon to Wed Logic 2 at Wilson Hill: Mon-Wed 12:30 to 2 OR Philosophy of Science at WTM Academy Witty Wordsmith by Lukeion 2:15 thursday ETA: Alternatively, he could do: Physics + Lab (1.5 credits) AP Calc (1 c) The Great Conversation (2.5 credits: 1 history, 1 english, .5 bible) Spanish 2 (1) Am History--easy, spine like time4learning or something at onlineg3 (1) and MAYBE witty wordsmith. (.5) So drop the Logic, and throw in an easy history class, which he needs to graduate. He will also be going to art class once a week at a local studio. dh is an artist, so he can always work with him and i can call it a credit, too.
  8. Has anyone's child taken this? what's the work load? Also, what'st he workload like for Phil of Science at WTM Academy? Thank you if anyone knows!
  9. for the first time EVER, turns out i have elevated triglycerides. I blame it all on trump LOL--too much sugar, carbs and wine ;) Anyway, other that changing my diet i am going to start taking a fish oil. There are so many on the market with so many health claims, and I'ld like to hear from the Hive about brands that have worked for them to lower triglycerides particularly. Thank you!!!
  10. Looking for an online art class where you submit your art and a teacher evaluates it, some guidance and reading would be great too...
  11. thanks! unfortunately, the meeting time conflicts for him. But thank you for pointing them out~
  12. My son needs a structured Lit class for 10th that includes writing assignments. The Lit classes at Wilson Hill don't look very appealing, and the ones at Well Trained Mind feel like they are part of a series that we're not really following. He needs the structure that a live online class provides, with assignments and homework. He works very well with his classes at Wilson Hill Academy, so something along those lines would be great. (his other classes next year will include: Calc AP at Wilson Hill, Logic 2 at Wilson Hill, Spanish at Wilson Hill, Great Conversation at Wilson Hill, Physics with Jetta Seboly, MAYBE Modern Am History with me --we're not working well together right now, so this is a big if, and then an English class of some sort??). He's taken lit classes at onlineg3--great offerings, but too unstructured for him. Thanks for any suggestions. ETA: I am wondering if Great Conversations will be enough--I think it just might be now that I look at it. He's not a big reader, so I think this could work as a stand-alone lit class. Does anyone know if the Great Conversation has any writing requirement as part of it?
  13. edited my op--can anyone comment as to whether the load looks too heavy for a good student but NOT a huge study geek? Calculus-Wilson Hill Spanish 2-Wilson Hill Rhetoric 1-WTMacademy US History--WTMacademy or onlineg3 Literature of the New World-WTM Academy or an onlineg3 lit class Physics: clover creek to me, this looks pretty heavy for my son. I know physics with clover creek is very demanding. I am sure Calc will be moderately hard (math is his best subject so..) Spanish with Wilson Hill will be moderate. I am guessing WTM academy classes, hwich we've never taken, will be lots of work-- any comments appreciated. DS14 is a good student but doesn't go 'over and above' and is not a huge study nerd (like me LOL) so I think this might be overdoing it. At the same time...it's 10th grade and I want him to step it up a little. We could do US HIstory at home just the two of us, as I love the topic, but we tend to butt heads.... ETA just saw that Onlineg3 has a US History Course and their courses are fun and not as demanding. That might work.
  14. HI all- sorry i wasn't active last week-I got the flu as did both my kids so we were not doing well. Feeling a little better now, but still not great. i had an okay week money wise. My employee quit (gave notice) and I am trying to look at it as an opportunity to work more shifts myself and make more money. Our CC bill is high right now but as I mentioned, DH gets an influx of cash soon so we will be able to pay it down. Groceries: $165/$600 (we were travelling so money spent was on dining out) Restaurants $130/150 Car payment 400/400 coffee shops 10/10 gas 21/$200 (i don't understand why this is so low--i need to check) money transferred into savings 250/500 movies and entertainment: 27/$80 MommyofFive I am so sorry about your accident--i beat myself up when i do stuff like that, and we ALL do. I drove into our garage with a bike on the top of the car---TWICE. I bumped a truck in front of me in my brand new prius and got a nice hole in the front fender as the guy had a huge hitch sticking out of his car, then i got ticketed for a late registration! my ds drove into our gate and his side mirror went flying off. It's awful when it happens but we're all human so forgive yourself. I am feeling pretty low to be honest. This whole Trump thing scares the bejeezus out of me and being sick with the flu doesn't help my energy--just feeling pretty beaten up. Trying to take it easy but it's tough when you homeschool and work outside the home. :( Anyway, hope all of you are having a better start to your week!
  15. Hi all!! How's everyone doing? Considering i was travelling all last week, i did pretty good. I am going to post my month to date numbers as that's easier for me: Groceries: 0/$600 (we were travelling so money spent was on dining out) Restaurants $100/150 Car payment 400/400 coffee shops 10/10 money transferred into savings 125/600 extra expenses: dog sitter: 250 I overspent by about 200 dollars last month on hobbies so i need to be careful this month. How was your week past? Any plans for this week? I am going to be cooking in A LOT--no dining out, and doing a fair amount of pantry cooking.
  16. okay, so until dh's bonus money comes in (i mentioned that he got a nice financial break above, but money won't come in for a bit) I need to tighten the belt. And since I am traveling with DS14, I havent made any money this week (I work for myself so if I don't work, I don't earn). As soon as I get home it's going to be all cash until money comes in, then we will pay off CC --i had to roll over a bit of a balance for the first time in a LONG time and I don't like that. Got hit with a 20 finance charge which I knew would happen but.... It's tough when one's income is so variable! DH's is VERY variable, mine a bit less so, but I am putting money in savings each week and then realize we might need that money, not because i haven't budgeted well but because the income dropped. I am determined to put away a large amount of money each week into our emergency fund, and don't want to tap it, but it's really tough. I think things will be easier when DH's money comes in.
  17. Well, I am glad to see I am not alone! I think it's because I have a husband who loves travel, and a son who LOVES travel, so I always feel like the stick in the mud. My youngest son is more like me-he likes traveling well enough, but is a homebody and prefers to be relaxing at home. When we have done road trips just the two of us, we have a great time. Lots of breaks, reading, walking, afternoon naps. Whereas DH and DS14 like to go go go go go.
  18. ITA. Traveling by car is much more up my alley.
  19. Yep, I am in NYC with my oldest DS14 who LOVES LOVES LOVES to travel. I mean, LOVES. I promised we'd visit family and he misses NYC (we moved to Florida 6 years ago) so we planned this trip and here we are. It's not awful, really. I just...prefer to be home with my dogs, I guess. I am doing my best to be positive.
  20. I know this is awful to admit. I feel embarrassed to even say it but..... I think I hate traveling. There, I said it. The prep, the packing, the flights, the waiting, the fatigue, the cranky kids, the delays, the strange beds, the requirement to "do a lot" every day to "make the most of" your time in your destination. I am pooped. I am supposed to be excited and energized and thrilled and happy. But TBH, I would rather be reading a great novel and knitting my sweater. Okay, I am pathetic. :001_unsure:
  21. Sorry that I am a day late getting this up. We are travelling and it's been challening to get online. I will post my stats for the week past tomorrow, but wanted to see how everyone is doing. Generally speaking, I am doing very well. We had a financial break come through this week with DH's work, so I am breathing a bit easier. AND HE FINALLY AGREED TO A BUDGET! We have been married 15 years and DH hates the idea of a budget, but he actually said to me "I think I should do a budget" and I was floored. Now, I have to be careful I don't scare him off--I already suggested he join my Mint account so we can track each other and he backed off immediately. So I have to go gentle LOL. Just the idea that he is willing to think about it is a big deal. I have always tracked our expenses to the best of my ability, but it's been tough when he spends money without it being in our mutual budget. So hopefully I can get him to recognize the importance of saving more, which is what he says he wants to do. Even though we've been travelling, I have been pretty good money-wise. This is a trip that was budgeted for, and we're staying with family, so that's good. How was YOUR week?
  22. hey all i am travelling but hope to get the new thread up asap!
  23. I work, and am adding a shift in Feb. I am keeping a much stricter budget, so hopefully that will add some funds. Yes, going to sell stuff. Feb and March I am diong a big clean. So that's something. DH works all the time at his business, and I run my own business, so I can work more to a degree (homeschooling! Arg! LOL) Older kid is getting a job but he wants to put money towards first car and college savings, which is his right, i think. We will look into cheaper car and health insurance. MIght join medical sharing plan as our insurance is 1000 a month for AWFUL coverage. THANK YOU!!!
