  1. And if I can add one more plug - GWG is great for left-handers because the workbook is spiral bound at the top, instead of on the side. :D
  2. Yes, those civilizations are covered in SOTW 1.:001_smile:
  3. When my kids were younger, we schooled year-round three weeks on and one week off. During our off week, I would catch up on house work and plan the next three weeks. I really liked this schedule because I didn't stress about taking days off to enjoy beautiful weather, or outings with friends. And, my kids would have lost a lot of ground over a three month summer break. Now that they are older, we slowly taper off, so we are done by the end of June with our curricula, take July off, and slowly ramp up with our new books in August. So, September through May we have our full load of all our subjects. June and August are school lite.
  4. Thanks for sharing this. I didn't know it existed. :001_huh:
  5. I love your wallpaper border, and your nice big windows! Our basement school room is dark and has paneling on the walls. We don't actually use it for school because we can't stand to be down there.
  6. I really like Melissa Wiley's blog: http://melissawiley.com/blog/ And Dawn's blog: http://dawnathome.typepad.com/by_sun_and_candlelight/ Enjoy! :D
  7. I have wondered the same thing. My family wants a Wii. My boys are just naturally drawn to screens, and I think the TV would be even more irresistible with a Wii attached. I had been anti-gaming systems. But then I realized we have games on our computer that they play regularly, and that doesn't keep them from delving into a good book. If they played Wii games, instead of computer games, their gaming time would be more social and more active. So, I am slowly caving in, but only because both of my boys are strong readers who choose to read for pleasure. If that changed, I would box up the Wii and put it into storage.
  8. I'm not teaching Latin. I have purchased several Latin curriculums, but just can't muster the enthusiasm to actually teach it. We are going with Spanish because it seems much more practical to me, and it is a language I previously studied, so I am more comfortable teaching it. I consider myself a "relaxed classical" homeschooler. :D
  9. We are using Teaching Textbooks 7, Lightning Lit, IEW History Based Writing Lessons, and Sonlight Core 6 for 6th grade.
  10. I second the recommendation for God's Design for Life.
  11. You aren't a failure when you act in the best interests of your children. :grouphug:
  12. Wow! What a great lesson for your kids about the rewards of being polite, curious, and attentive students. :001_smile:
  13. In high school I stole the Spanish teacher's lunch. She always packed a sack lunch, and left it on the window sill to keep it cold. Someone dared me. I was actually in the French class next door, and climbed out the window to steal it. We all had a laugh and ate her lunch (I don't know where the French teacher was during all of this). I confessed a couple of hours later when one of my classmates was wrongly accused. So yeah, I've led a pretty dull life. ;)
  14. I have to hear the story behind this! Does one mom have twins and the other triplets?
  15. I'm disappointed you won't be offering any of these sessions in Cincinnati. :(
  16. :iagree: And a big ditto to everything Strider and Janice in NJ said! I'll see you in Cincinnati! :D
  17. I would guess that in another six months to a year she will choose to read longer books. In the meantime, could you read them aloud to her? That may spark her interest.
  18. IMHO, TOG is overkill for second grade. Go for the fun Winter Promise curriculum. There is plenty of time later for meat. And with your busy schedule, and a baby, I think Winter Promise would also be a better fit for you (mom) at this stage of life.
