  1. Just sent DS some Halloween candy to hand out to dorm mates (hopefully!) and he's pretty happy with that.
  2. I totally get it about not wanting to mess it up. Maybe give the current number of hours in the time slots (are those the highest numbers?) and then make a note that some of those hours were reduced during the pandemic and the hours represent his current contributions?
  3. DS is doing okay I think. He did well on this chem exam, other exams still not returned. He went to a local cemetery tour and a lecture on owl feathers vs feathers of other birds. So he at least has his sea legs enough to fit in some extras.
  4. We used the actual hours, which were reduced during Covid times, and noted that reduction in the section for how DS was affected by the pandemic. Is that question still there this year?
  5. I had a column for pre-HS classes that were taken before 9th grade. I likely would not have included the French class on my transcript simply because it was middle school level and that column was for high school level and I'd want to keep it honest as far as GPA.
  6. Like regentrude said, check how transferable it is. We split it across two different colleges but they were in the same cc district. DS did the first one at a closer college, but for whatever reason the administrators decided the second semester would only be offered at the farther away college going forward. (Maybe too many people who didn't sign up, so they consolidated?) It worked out fine. At least in CA, these courses are transferable to both of our university systems as direct course replacements, so the content was essentially the same.
  7. I know some about it; we looked at it and visited for DS and I grew up nearby and spent a fair amount of time at the Claremont Colleges. I don't know if that's enough to help, but it's not very big so it can be hard to get info. It's a great school, I think for a specific type of focused person. I agree it wouldn't be tippy top, but I think it's pretty close. The students are friendly and engaged. Claremont is a better place to live that when I was young, mostly because they've built the Metrolink so it doesn't feel as isolated. It's a nice place but there's not much to do outside of Claremont in the immediate area. The campus is small and I think somewhat depressing, but the rest of the consortium has more attractive spaces to spend time in. If you visit and go see Pomona, Scripps, CMC, etc you'll see what I mean. Another one to think about if he's willing to go far enough would be Cal Poly SLO. Maybe USC?
  8. I think you should split them and it should be fine. And if needed he can review his notes over the summer right before re-starting in the fall. My DS didn't end up splitting and had already taken calculus by the time he did calc-based physics, but it's been a huge boon to him in college. It didn't just affect the way he thinks about practical applications of math, because he'd done the calc-based he was invited to an advanced physics class with specialized topics that he's enjoying immensely. All in all, it was an excellent decision. I just want to encourage you in that regard.
  9. Our local cc also used Parchment and we sent them directly. Some schools didn't require official transcripts unless you were accepted and decided to attend, which would have been a bit of a money saver but we sent them anyway with the application, just to be safe and to conform my transcript early on.
  10. I'm glad to hear it went well and esp that he got the class he wanted. I'm still processing and it's been a month today since we saw DS. It takes time. I no longer cry if I have to go into his room at least. Be kind to yourself! Sounds amazing!
  11. How did drop off go? Fingers crossed for all the good things.
  12. I did 3 weights: regular, honors with +0.5, and DE/AP with +1.0. I'm in CA so I file a private school affidavit and the number of honors/AP/DE classes offered by my school were the same as the number DS took. I don't think you would do your son a favor by counting all the possible classes he could have taken but didn't.
  13. March and June sounds good. We had signed up for June only and that was cancelled due to covid among the proctors, and we had to wait until Oct and drive a long ways to get in. The latest for what we had planned (all regular decision, CA state schools not accepting SAT scores) was Dec. I would check your state school dates and also think about if you want to apply ED anywhere.
  14. Taxes are paying for the premiums though. Maybe the answer lies in schools becoming un-insurable (or the threat of that) if there are too many payouts due to bullying.
  15. My son was the same way, minus the bullying, and my daughter sounds the same as yours too. On his own initiative, our son did start doing more pushups and strength-building exercises. He's still slim but now quite strong. We did a few things: 1) Encouraged strength building, mostly by discussing he's in him peak building years. Luckily it was also a weight-lifting dad of a friend who did most of that talking. 2) Examining his ration of Omega3:Omega6; he was getting a lot of 6 vs 3 and correcting that imbalance helped him. 3) Increased his protein intake. 4) Getting clothes that fit properly for his body. Our go-to is Uniqlo. Just having clothes with his measurements made him happy. 5) Looking at old growth charts, since they're based on percentiles. While he was in the 5th-8th percentile now, in older charts he was more like the 25th-30th. 6) Talked to him about the importance of good eating habits because it's easy to have bad ones when you're thin.
  16. That's much better than the "indefinite, probably into the new year" timeframe I got when I called soon after Hilary! Our reservations are for early January.
  17. How did I miss this thread earlier?! DS spent the summer getting ready. I was gone for most of it, caring for ill parents, and so we didn't optimize our spending while purchasing everything we needed online here and there. (I love shared spreadsheets!) We did same some money by carrying almost everything in our suitcases and then making one run to Target near the college for liquids, snacks, and a rug. Bless the lady at the checkout who let him ignore the sign up as a college student and just scanned a code and gave him 25% off. Registration went well and he got all the classes at the time he wanted. We moved him in Aug 19 and then stayed for the first few days of orientation, as they had some family events and DD wanted museum time in a new city. The full orientation for new students was a week long and he found it very helpful. His roommate is interesting--very bright and a maker. Brought a ton of stuff but managed to get it all to fit in the room. Luckily, his roommate is generous in sharing and DS's side is much more sparse. We met the roommate's parents and they are super nice. DS seems to be adjusting so far. I had felt fairly comfortable with the classes since he's already taken AP/CC/my own versions before, but suddenly he was invited to advanced classes instead which made me more nervous. So far it's turned out to be a great idea though, as those classes are smaller and are covering topics he's had no exposure to yet. Not sure what he's doing for Thanksgiving. I bought him a ticket to his uncle's, which is still a flight but not cross country and is non-stop. Coming home would be two long flights with a transfer. He'd prefer to avoid flying at all and is hoping for a local-ish invitation by car but we will see. For winter holidays, he's coming home but our hoped for trip to Death Valley might be cancelled because the entire park is closed after hurricane Hilary.
  18. We did these as a year-long read aloud rather than car audio, but I would put The Hobbit and Lord of The Rings on the list. We also enjoyed Stuff Matters (but it's not lit) at that age. Other thoughts: Agatha Christie, War of The Worlds, Frankenstein
  19. 5 minutes ago: "I understand you think it's a mullet, but it's not long enough in the back. And what do you mean when you call it a 'soft mullet' anyway?"
  20. Just spent an audible credit on it and I have an hour and a half wait for DD this afternoon so good timing.
  21. At a pretty basic level, along with truth tables.
