DD8 is going as a bride. DD5 will be a flowergirl, using a dress I wore as a flowergirl 25+ years ago!

What products do they no longer make that you wish they did?
lanabug replied to DawnM's topic in The Chat Board
Cherry powdered frosting mix - My favorite candy at Christmas is Cherry Mash and it's just not the same consistency using anything else. American Beauty perfume at Kohl's - they made a lilac scent that I absolutely loved! wood Tinker Toys - I know they're still available, but they're so expensive now and flimsy compared to what I had as a child. Spanish rice in a can - had a recipe that called for this and it was such a quick meal. I still make it with boxed Spanish rice, but it takes much longer. Lana -

We used USLegalForms.com and were pleased with how easy it was to do our own wills, but we weren't sure how good they were, IYKWIM. So we had an attorney review them and it turns out the wills we did were just fine for our state's laws. They were very similar to the attorney's standard format, in fact. Lana

Galloping the Globe can someone fill me in
lanabug replied to bnwhitaker's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I found it easier to print the activity pages from the CD since it can be difficult to get the book to lay flat on a copier. Lana -
It's not entirely a historical romance, but I'd suggest the Mark of the Lion series by Francine Rivers. It's by a Christian author, set in 1st century Rome. I don't remember anything that would be objectionable for a middle-schooler. The books are: A Voice in the Wind An Echo in the Darkness As Sure as the Dawn Lana

who has 2nd grade planned for the fall? Care to share
lanabug replied to momma aimee's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Here's our plan: Language Arts - WWE2, FLL2 Spelling - SWO B Math - CLE 2 History - SOTW 2 Geography - Daily Geography Practice 2 Science - ES Earth Science/Astronomy and possibly BFSU Bible - BSGFAA Intermediate Level Handwriting - ARFH B Art/Music - HFA Grade 2 and Artistic Pursuits Co-op - will do Spanish and Aesop's Fables, plus PE Soccer in fall and spring, gymnastics in the winter Piano/voice lessons We will finish OPGTR this week, so no more phonics! We'll probably start some literature studies either the 2nd half of 2nd grade, or more likely, in 3rd grade. Lana -
Hopefully you've seen the doctor by now! Both of my dd's used to get these when they were in diapers. Our pediatrician told us to do frequent, hot compresses to help draw the infection to the surface. We also found that putting a drop of oil of oregano on the spot would completely cure the infection. I'm planning to switch dd7 (rising 2nd grader) to CLE math next year. I *love* Singapore, but she needs a bit more practice on each topic before moving on, and I really can't afford to add the extra Singapore practice books right now. I'm looking for your experiences with going from Singapore to CLE. We'll be going from 1A/1B to CLE 2, and I'm a bit concerned that Singapore waits so long to introduce vertical problems. CLE seems to introduce them very early in 1st grade. Your thoughts on switching? Lana

Take a look at what I am planning, and tell me what you think. 1st grade - SOTW 1 2nd - SOTW 2 3rd - SOTW 3 4th - SOTW 4 5th - American History 6th - State History - We'd do a semester of our state's history, then study US Geography/50 states the other semester. 7th - Ancients 8th - Middle Ages 9th - Early Modern 10th - Modern 11th - American History 12th - Government / Current Events Does that seem reasonable? I know SWB says to do the history cycle 3 times, but I'd really like to devote more time to American history. Lana

What are you using with your second grader?
lanabug replied to Quiver0f10's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
My dd is currently 1st grade, but here's what we'll be using next year. Grammar: FLL 2 Writing: WWE 2 Handwriting: ARFH B Spelling: R&S Spelling by Sound & Structure Math: CLE Math 2 Science: Elemental Science and BFSU History: SOTW 2 Geography: EM Daily Geography 2 Bible: BSGFAA Intermediate level Art/Music: Harmony Fine Arts 2, plus piano/voice lessons (I also may add Artistic Pursuits, as our co-op will not be doing art next year.) Co-op: PE, Spanish, and Aesop's Fables She'll also either do soccer or gymnastics (she is undecided still). Lana -
I think you mean Stillwater rather than Sweetwater. Stillwater is probably an hour from OKC, not really a suburb. I think where your friend looks for a home will depend on where their job will be located. I personally would not want to live in Midwest City. I would suggest Mustang, Yukon, or even Piedmont. Those are small suburbs of OKC but still very close to everything. Edmond is a wonderful city but quite a bit more expensive than other areas. If your friend will be working at Tinker Air Force Base, she could look at the Choctaw area or possibly even Shawnee. Midtown OKC has some fabulous old neighborhoods if you want something not so cookie-cutter. Most newer homes here will be mostly brick with front-facing garages, so that does tend to make them look similar. Tornadoes really aren't as big a deal as you might think. Many homes have shelters, and the weather forecasters here are amazing when it comes to advance warning. If there is a good chance of tornadoes, all 3 major networks will be nothing but weather coverage until the danger is past. Housing is very reasonable here, with decent-sized lots in neighborhoods. We've just had 2 solid days of rain here, so hopefully the lakes will fill up quite a bit! We've had mandatory odd-even water rationing for outdoor watering during the summers, but that's more of a hassle than anything. Lana

We'll start 2nd grade in early August, and I think I've pretty much narrowed down what we will be using. Grammar - FLL 2 Writing - WWE 2 Spelling - Rod & Staff Spelling 2 (switching from AAS to this) Handwriting - A Reason for Handwriting B Math - CLE 2 or MM - can't decide which one, but dd needs more practice than SM is giving her Science - Elemental Science Earth Science/Astronomy and BFSU History - SOTW 2 Geography - Evan-Moor Daily Geography Art - Harmony Fine Arts w/ Artistic Pursuits Music - voice/piano lessons Bible - BSGFAA, Intermediate level PE - through weekly co-op, plus gymnastics and/or soccer Lana

I just had my annual physical and in addition to the regular fasting blood sugar test, my dr. had the lab do an A1C. It came back slightly elevated, at a 5.8. I definitely indulged in several sweet treats over Christmas, so I'm wondering how much this could have influenced the A1C test? (I have a feeling that if I'd done the test before the holidays it would have come back normal.) My FBS has always been fine, but I do have a family history of diabetes and I am overweight. I've already started cutting out carbs and sugar, now I just need to get on an exercise plan! Lana

Can you help me figure out what size clothes my dad needs?
lanabug replied to *********'s topic in The Chat Board
My husband is 5'7" and weighs about 165-170 and wears a medium shirt, 34x30 pants, if that helps. I'd probably get a 36 waist for your dad. Your dad is very blessed to have you taking such good care of him! Lana -
It's a pattern of perfect cubes: 1x1x1=1 2x2x2=8 3x3x3=27 The last one is 12x12x12=1728 Lana

To determine which pronoun to use, try turning the sentence around. Instead of saying, "My brother is him," turn it around to "Him is my brother." That makes it pretty obvious that "him" is not correct in the first sentence. Typically, you will not hear someone say in conversation, "My brother is he." Americans generally use the pronoun first, i.e. "He is my brother." Hope that helps! Lana

DD7 just read a book in an hour
lanabug replied to UmMusa's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I was like that as a kid. My mom used to quiz me over the books. She'd pick a random page, scan it, and then ask me some obscure detail just to be sure I'd read it. Drove me crazy, but it was kind of fun to show off a little bit too! Lana -
What about writing a letter "to" a famous historical person or a fictional character? They could even have the "recipient" of the letter write one back. Write letters/send care packages to military overseas? How about writing postcards for an imaginary trip? Each student could pick a trip and write several postcards about the things they "saw" on their trip. If it's a religious co-op, how about having them write a new letter (pretend to be Paul, etc.) to the 1st century Christians, or what would an apostle write to today's churches? Lana

Spelling Workout Alternatives?
lanabug replied to North Coast School's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
Is there somewhere online to see samples of R&S? We've been using AAS 1 this year and my daughter hates it. Lana -
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00196LFJY/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i02 I bought this one for my dh in 2008. We both love it! It has options to change how long it takes to reach full brightness, it has a "sundown" feature to use at night (and man, it makes me sleeeeepppy!), and if the alarm hasn't been turned off once it reaches full brightness, the radio or buzzer alarm kicks on. help me find a toothpaste....
lanabug replied to kfeusse's topic in General Education Discussion Board
It's pricy, but my girls have switched to Tate's Natural Miracle toothpaste and have no complaints. It's a mint flavor, but very mild. Spry is also a very mild flavor that we have used and liked. Lana -
Not sure how to help on spelling words like "item" other than exaggerating the pronunciation. For words like "broken" I would remind her to spell the root word first. Lana

Probably. Not necessarily explicitly monosodium glutamate, but naturally-occurring glutamate that is concentrated through processing. Most canned tomato products have citric acid added, which comes from corn. Corn is naturally high in glutamate. Tomatoes are also high in naturally-occurring glutamate, which is increased through cooking. I cannot eat Rotel tomatoes anymore due to MSG sensitivity. I have found that I can have small quantities of the Muir Glen version. Lana
